Lens roadmap: Tanaka-san spills the beans

Has anyone looked into what Japan wants?

I don't read or speak Japanese so I cannot embark upon this research myself.

If so, then that may give some forward guidance as to what Ricoh is planning in accordance with what it thinks will sell in that market.

Any thoughts? (beyond mere wishes!)

I like square format and for ease of use the 1:1 in the latest firmware update pleased me immensely. I can get some lovely square high-contrast black and white images at the turn of a User Mode. And then with another turn of the dial I can use the 36MP FF sensor and amazing dynamic range on landscapes... I could go on! The K1 is an incredible image making machine. I'll never be good enough for it but it is very forgiving and seems to want to will me to become the better photographer that I want to be!

Amateur Photographers (UK) Predicts End for Pentax

It was one of the Viewpoint columns, so unless one has the actual magazine or online access it isn't possible.

In all the subsequent magazine articles Pentax cameras have been praised for the things we love about them, and lightly criticised for the same things we don't like. The article generated a life of its own and I am fairly certain that the vast majority of people did not in fact read the offending paragraphs!

I did, and found it to be no more speculative than anywhere else. As I have consistently pointed out, Amateur Photographer is one of the few voices, in this country at least, that promotes and reviews Pentax cameras. As I have written elsewhere, both the K-1ii and the K-70 were praised as excellent buys in AP's recent article on best cameras in various categories. The K-1ii was highly commended in the pro category, and the K-70 in the beginner category (although we all know that it is more than a 'beginner' camera) so there is a voice for Pentax, and it seems churlish to bash the magazine - and it is juts a magazine, not the Bible! - that shows our favourite make of camera in a positive light.

I would hazard a guess that the he knows no more or less than that which we discuss on this forum.

And ironically, as I posted elsewhere in the forum, AP recently ran an article on the best cameras to buy now (December 2018), and the K-70 and K1ii are both recommended in their respective categories (beginner and professional).

They also wrote a very positive article on the K1 with 24-70 f2.8 on a trip to the Faroes, in which the camera was praised highly indeed. The Faroe islands are wild and wet and windswept and a modern Pentax would be the camera of choice. They are not Pentax bashers at all, even though there have been a few negative posts on this forum. I am not an apologist for AP at all, but I think we need to be careful not to bash one of the very few magazines in the UK that show the strengths and unique features of our chosen marque. It would be easy for them to give up on Pentax like others have done, but they are generally even-handed. I think that Andy Westlake was musing and engaging in supposition - something we do quite well here!

I have just bought a brand new K1 and 28-105mm from SRS Microsystems for a great price (for the UK!) of 1299 and 269. I looked at the K1ii but seeing as I could get the K1 and a great lens for the price of the K1ii, that's just what I did. I shoot landscapes and portraits, not birds in flight or sports... I have a lovely collection of vintage glass that will be put to good use on my K1.

Can't wait!

I'm in for the long haul, like most of us here on this wonderful grouping of enthusiastic and knowledgeable people. As Adam said, one of the reasons not to switch to another brand is missing out on being part of Pentax Forums - tongue in cheek perhaps, but with a definite ring of truth!

In the latest edition(of AP (8 December 2018) they have the K1ii and the K70 in their list of best buys in their respective categories. Even if Ricoh/Pentax marketing departments exist in name only it is good to see two Pentax cameras being promoted today. And by the very magazine that cogitated on the future of the brand! How serendipitous..!

The End of the DSLR?

I think that AP can say what they like. Surely it is their job to look at things from all angles, good and bad?

They assess all types of image-making equipment and I don't believe that they want Pentax to fail. They are one of the very few publications (certainly in the UK) to mention Pentax, or write articles about Pentax products. If Pentax fails because of AP then that would be something!

They have, as has been mentioned above by slartibartfast01, written some very encouraging articles on Pentax cameras - the K1 and 28-105 were the subjects of a report of a trip to the Faroe Islands and the article was very positive. If you as a journalist were writing about X product and there were companies who fairly regularly produced new derivatives of X, and another company which engendered warm fuzzy feelings amongst its product users but for all intents and purposes released very little X into the market, with no commentary on the future save for a lonely graphic which gets trotted out in a rather desultory fashion at a few roadshows (the lens roadmap) showing a few nice potential but not guaranteed x's, might you also have some doubts about their longevity? I cannot think of any other group of supporters of X that would have held on for so little for so long!

I think that Pentax has to provide some clarity about the future or people will simply be worn down by all the waiting and simply move on. We as Pentax users need new blood to keep the brand going, but if all Pentax does is release a new lens every now and then, and give no indication of its future support of crop/FF/MF cameras and lenses why would anyone invest in any of their offerings? This is a direct quote from one of your posts: In the end, more total bodies and more Pentax users in total will lead to more future demand. That part is pretty simple. If that does not happen then consumers will buy a laggy mirrorless EVF over a bright DSLR OVF because is will be easier. Being a Pentax supporter and/or user just feels at times like being a salmon swimming upstream!

You have been able to summarise and clarify more in your single post than a thousand posts have over the past few years. it made sense that the KP was the successor but Pentax should have been more explicit about it. I have a KP and will take some time to learn to use it anywhere near its potential. What will a new APSC offer that we don't have in the KP, besides the obvious of better C-F and more F-points, and a dual card slot for fast cards? I think I will use my money to move into FF. Do you think Pentax has to offer a mirrorless option, or are we too conservative a bunch, and will be happy with a tricked-out APSC flagship? I'm 49 years old and some way below the average age of the members of this forum, and yet I also don't really care about mirrorless unless it was FF and came with a super-duper adapter to use my K mount lenses on. This post, as do many, offers no solution!
