New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

It would definitely void the warranty, but I'm a software guy so I'd probably take that risk.

I like Pentax cameras though; some folks just like to tinker. They wouldn't even really have to release their own firmware, but if they provided low level interface descriptions hackers would have a field day. I don't think MagicLantern is hurting Cannon - being mod-friendly might help expand the Pentax niche a bit, while costing nothing and not getting in the way of their core business, unlike some of the speculative features discussed here.

They're conservative and somewhat private though, so I don't see such a move being consistent with their company culture. I'll still happily buy their cameras :)

Id be really excited about that, or even better: open sourcing firmware. Definitely not going to happen though.

Echoing Roadboat24, I've been really enjoying Darktable on Linux. The Windows version seemed a little buggy, but the experience is pretty smooth on Linux.

It's hard to beat free.

Difference between K mount and M42 mount 15mm/F3.5 (with aspherical element)

Generally I don't think so, except in the way the mount changes lens behavior (always stopped down on M42 vs. default open on K). M42 lenses may be older or more worn, and I'd say the experience of attaching them to the camera is inferior.

Do you have a specific pair in mind?

If you know enough to know about the white solenoid fix, surely you know that any number of people would take that camera off your hands. I hope "the bin" was metaphorical.

Are you thinking of the K1? KP is only ~30% price difference with K70 new. Even less used:

Will a different focusing screen help?

That looks like an autofocus screen, and doesn't appear to have the microprisms being discussed here. Is that what you're going for?

It pulls double duty: triggering focus for autofocus lenses using the AF button on the back of the camera instead of a shutter half-press, as well as triggering the catch-in-focus, focus confirmation etc. behavior (if enabled) for manual lenses.

Interesting, how does that work? Does that imply that f32 on the older lens had a wider absolute aperture than the new WR? Perhaps the lens was longer?

It's a setting (at least on the cameras I'm familiar with) that allows you to press the shutter, but have it only fire in the instant that the picture comes into focus as you turn the focus ring or move your camera. On my K-S2, it's on custom function page 4.

Not sure what you mean exactly

It means you trigger auto-focus with the "AF AE-L" button rather than a shutter half press. It's on the "Button Customization" page. This pairs really well with catch-in-focus, because you can hold down the focus button, depress the shutter when you're close, and the camera will fire when focus hits. For hand held macro or action/telephoto with manual lenses, it's really really helpful.

Just a thought, have you tried using catch-in-focus with the back button focus setting? I find that really useful for manual focus lenses.

Taken early morning on a K-S2 with an old 17mm fish eye: SMC Pentax 17mm F4 Fish-Eye Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

It's not tack-sharp throughout the scene (and the dog has motion blur, he was running all over the place), but there's not much in the way of bokeh.

The 560 wasn't on my radar at all, since I figured I'd eventually get the 150-450, but the 560 is now officially on my radar.

K-50 / K-500 Aperture Solenoid fix (DIY with pics)

With modern lenses (no aperture ring), I can confirm (K-S2) that the green solenoid causes problems in M mode just like in Av mode. I didn't observe its state/operation directly though, just noted that replacement with white solenoid fixed the issue reproduced in M.

Is it possible you're accidentally bumping the review button? That wouldn't explain the blank screen though...

The one I bought had a different seller listed, but it looks like the same listing:

Pentax K-30 K-50 K-S1/S2 K-500 Genuine Aperture Solenoid Plunger Part - Japan - | eBay

So far so good with it. Pictures of the two solenoids here:

The Peak Design one should work, since it should come with a plate to screw into the tripod mount. Edit, link:

If I'm not mistaken, generic digital intervalometers should work with both cameras. These often have a slide-lock to keep the shutter open, and can also do intervalometer-timing stuff.
