(tiny) HOOD of HD 20-40mm Limited: is it crappy or just fine?

I've had my 20-40 since March and have been using it a lot. There have been a couple instances of off-axis flare which I use my hand to block. The flare inducing situations I have encountered would also have caused flare with a DA12-24 with stock hood, or the DA 16-50 with stock hood. I did anticipate needing a 'better' hood, and bought a couple when I ordered my 20-40, but I haven't used them--didn't see the need. The DA 20-40, IMHO. is a *wonderful* lens. Don't let the puny hood stop you from buying. I even use mine for wildlife :)

DCU5 Browsing MacOS files

I don't use DCU5, but I do use a Mac. My suggestion: download the free version of Adobe Bridge and use that for image file browsing. Right click on the image you want to process and use the "open with" command to specify DCU5 to open your file. You can use Bridge to select from however many raw converters you have installed on your computer.

Do this search once a week or so:
Pentax in Canada - Kijiji?

There was a KP listed in Calgary a couple months ago.

Some people on kijiji are leery about shipping, but I've had some success a few times.

Import fees: You will likely need to pay PST/GST on your purchase.

Postage to Japan is *very* expensive, so if there is a problem with your purchase, make sure the seller pays for return postage.

Sun Camera repairs Pentax products in Canada. Sun Camera Service Ltd. - Home
You'd probably be better off dealing with them for repairs vs cross border shipping, taxes and the higher US dollar.

Also, The Camera Store in Calgary sells this lens for CAD $599 new with 2yrs warranty, which, with shipping, is pretty close to what you paid for yours.

You could spend some money and have it repaired, or you could spend some money and acquire another lens that's not quite as good. I suspect ROI on a repair would make it worthwhile.

My K-5 was getting long in the tooth, so I bought the K-3 as a 'backup' as there were no 2nd hand K-5iis available at the time I was looking. I like the K-3 just fine, but my heart still belongs to the K-5.

One of the reasons I prefer the K-5 is the smaller file size. I don't need more resolution. Not looking forward to having to upgrade my computer. And the K-5 has a wonderful dynamic range.

And, every once in a while I shoot a vertical shot on the K-3, my neanderthal brow accidentally actuates the live view button. :)

My advice: upgrade to a K-5iis now and in a few years when they're cheaper get a preowned K-1.

I have not compared the two, but I have found the S-type from focusingscreen to work very well. Had to mess about a bit with the shims, but well worth the effort.

Strange behavior of A 50mm 1.2 during Av mode?
Posted By johnyates
Replies: 24

If you want to shoot in Av mode, you should use the 'A' setting. If you do not use the 'A' setting, the camera will not stop down to your selected aperture--you'll be shooting wide open, and with center-weighted metering.

If you use other than 'A' setting, the you should shoot in manual, and you'll have to use the compensation.

K-3 metering problems with legacy ultra wide lens - overexposed

Your 24mm is not an 'A' series lens, so when you use it on your K-3, the metering mode switches to 'center weighted' from matrix. So how it meters depends on what in the scene you have it pointed at.

When metering, position the frame so that the center of the scene contains both highlights and shadows, then re-compose and take your shot.

I use an unsized artists brush. I give it a blast of canned air to give it electrostatic charge. Works a treat.

I've got one of these. There were 4 different varieties I believe. The one I have has a concave front element and thoriated glass. One day I intend to purchase a full frame mirrorless to be able to use it again.

Which M42 mount standard prime?

You might want to consider the Takumar 55mm f2. It's really a 1.8 with an artificially reduced maximum aperture. So, wide open is equivalent to a slightly stopped down 1.8 only with better bokeh due to round aperture.

To prevent over exposure and blown out channels when shooting flowers, try using spot metering .

Daylight white balance would help too.
