Anyone Used Your Photos?

Some real-world usages include:

- a beer cooler at a local RSL club;
- poster for a homeless shelter;
- flyer for a country show rodeo;
- large wall poster at a retirement home.

Except for the wall poster, all of those public usage examples were chance discoveries of mine around local towns. No doubt there are many more usage examples further afield that I don't know about.

A very indirect usage of my photos is that I was once contacted by someone from a national broadcaster (SBS in Australia) who was scouting inner-city locations for a set of station video promos they wanted to shoot. I had shot a couple of alley-way scenes around Surry Hills a long time ago that they saw online so, GPS metadata being absent, they asked me for the exact locations my images were shot in.

Just watched the first of what looks like a whole series of new YouTube videos about the use of Pentax cameras in astro-photography, published on 10 November and created by CR Kennedy Imaging (the Pentax distributors in Australia). Useful and informative.

Acon R930 P-TTL radio trigger and 1/8000 Sync

Once upon a time, it was the only P-TTL radio trigger available.

Now there are other, nicer options, of course, from Godox etc.

I really can't recommend Acon anymore, due to their sloppy business operation as much as their outdated technology.

Many new buyers of Olympus and Sony cameras with in-body SR have the same experience.

I suspect many camera stores have lots of new and perfectly functional cameras returned due to disconcerting sounds within the body of the SR mechanism.

They have, I think, been looking at ways to combine both EVF and OVF. Combined EVF/OVF would be ideal, as long as it didn't mean dumbing down one or the other just to get a combined system working.

Worth mentioning in this discussion that not all lenses may pass the same level of light through to a camera sensor, even if a lens may have the same focal length, aperture and optical design.

The effect of the type of glass used, the lens coatings employed, ageing of the lens elements, optical design etc may simply make some comparable lenses 'darker' or 'brighter' than others.

Lens T-stop values indicate the light transmission of a lens. Commonly seen on cinema lenses.

What was the justification provided by XIAOMI? Seems like performance or cost may not have been the only factors in the decision.

It's also not clear whether it means XIAOMI will now simply add Samsung sensors into their evolving product mix, alongside Sony, or rely on Samsung image sensors exclusively in future for their new phones. If it's exclusive sourcing, that may be a big deal, esp if other Chinese manufacturers then do the same.

Hacking camera firmware to plant ransomware

I may have overstated the risk, true. Much depends on hardware and software configurations, and connectivity environments.

But the key to the vulnerability is use of a basic camera control protocol (PTP) that is implemented in thousands of cameras, past and present, from many brands. Hence attacks that launch through PTP vulns won't likely be brand specific.

This could easily happen to any brand camera, but security researchers have recently been able to hack the firmware of a Canon 80D to, amongst other things, plant ransomware on the camera via USB or WiFi connections.

And then software - your camera settings (JPEG vs RAW, & if JPEG the in-camera preset you choose).

Plus the software you use to view and process the RAW/JPEG/TIFF etc images for display or print. Most notably, each RAW processor, for example, has it's own ideas about colour fundamentals. Feed DxO or Adobe or C1 or with the same Sony RAW file and colours will look different for each processor at their default settings.

When you factor in the galaxy of photo hardware and software permutations out there, there is a vast range of variables that might shape the colours of any regular image we may see or print. Hard to get 'scientific' results about camera colour output outside of a controlled lab-environment.

Have you downloaded the PENTAX Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe« Photoshop« Lightroom« (Simple Version)? K-5 IIS is not explicitly supported, but it might work.

Software Downloads : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING

Other than that, the WiFi card option may be the only way to go.

Presuming you have already tried the Pentax FluCard ... once you find a WiFi card that works :

pair it with WiFiCommander for Pentax:

Impossible to get good sharpness ┐is it the camera, lenses, focus, me...?

Some words of encouragement - the K-x is a good little camera that is perfectly capable of taking great, sharp images, including landscape.

Re the problem you've identified, if simple motion blur or the wrong aperture settings is not the culprit, I suggest doing what you can to separately test (a) lens and (b) camera AF.

To start, in good, bright light, prepare a totally flat non-3D test scene with lots of detail in the middle of the scene (even a newspaper page stuck on a wall will do). Then use a tripod (dont forget to turn off the camera's shake reduction if you are using a tripod), arrange your camera and lens to point to the direct centre of this test scene, and set a focal length in the middle of the zoom range of your 18-50 lens (eg 28-35mm).

Set the camera exposure mode to Aperture priority (Av), and set the aperture to a maximum of f8 (no need to use f29 or f18 like in your posted images). Or simply set your camera to 'AUTO PICT' (Auto Picture') mode and let the camera handle most of the settings.

Then, (a) test the lens:

- switch on Live View and manually focus the lens until the subject looks sharp on the rear LCD screen. Press the INFO button in LV to enlarge the scene to check focus in detail, if desired. As you prepare the shot, if possible try to keep the ISO being used lower than 800 ISO and your shutter speed higher than 1/125. Then gently press the shutter and shoot a few shots. (Ideally, trigger the shutter with the camera's 2 or 12 second self-timer, to minimise camera shake). Review the results on your computer to see if the scene looks acceptably sharp.

Next, (b) test the AF:

- initially, use LiveView to do the AF tests. Turn on LV, set the focus mode lever to AF, select Contrast AF as the LV Autofocus mode, and then shoot a few images.

- then test 'normal' viewfinder AF by turning off LiveView, setting the focus mode lever to AF, the AF mode AF.S, the focus area to Auto 5 (the default), and then shoot.

See which tests produced the sharpest images. If manual focus using LV fails to produce acceptably sharp images, the lens may simply be not great or be dirty or damaged. However if the same lens produces sharp images manually focused in LV, but using LV AF or normal viewfinder AF does not produce sharp results, then something may indeed be amiss with the camera AF, or your settings or technique.

If the AF works bad when using viewfinder AF, but not LV AF, there is the remote possibility that the AF assembly in the body has some crud in it or has taken a knock. It might help to give the interior of the camera an inspection, and if dust or crud are apparent, gently clean around the bottom of the mirror box with a rocket blower.

A further test may be to simply try another [non Sigma] AF lens. Or if you suspect that your lenses are just soft, get a clean manual focus prime lens that's known to be sharp (eg M 50 f1.7) and shoot some tests. You could also mount your current lenses on another Pentax to see how they work there.

The simplest fix worth exploring, of course, may be to remove any UV or protection filters from your lenses (if you have them fitted). They reduce the optical quality of a lens (some are truly awful) and sometimes they can interfere with AF too.

Sony 600mm F/4 $13,000

And in the case of the Sony 600mm f4, very closely aligned with competitor offerings:
[from B&H]
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens: $12,296.95

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lens: $12,999.00

So $13000 seems to be about what everyone expects to pay for a new, stabilized 600mm f4.

If this task comes up more regularly, you might look into what services like Zenfolio can offer you. They have partnered with some big local print labs like Nulabs, which could be helpful, and they can handle printing, fulfilment etc.
