Any new APS-C bodies on the horizon?

A colleague asked me yesterday what's my camera and what do I suggest as he wants to try ILC photography. I told him it depends on whether he minds lugging heavy stuff and if he can tolerate EVF. Either way, I suggested buying second hand, with probably more bargains in SLR land. One of the cameras mentioned was A6400 and his comment was that it's heavy at 400g :D

Now I'm eagerly awaiting further questions once he does a bit of homework. He comes from GoPro and drone stuff where he mostly did sports videos, yet he seems unaware of the bulk required to take decent photos of that (regardless of the weight of the body).

It's really hard to give a definite recommendation to general audience. Pretty much any modern camera is really good at what it does.
What's 2k USD/EUR to you? Which components of "photography experience" matter to you? Where are you coming from, in terms of bodies and lenses? What bothers you with what you have?

So we can only talk specific circumstances and personal preferences.
First time I printed some 50cmx70cm photos taken with K5II was this year after I got K3III. To me they look amazing. I could probably go 4x the size and they'd still look amazing (I'd just need a bigger house and more walls to accommodate that). So I found out I don't really care about megapixels or even sensor advances that much. Realized stuff I have is more than capable to deliver whatever I could try. Yes, I struggled with AF and low light and, true, K3III improved that a lot, but did I really need it? Not really. Still have a lot of great photos.

Earlier this year I was thinking of getting A7III to see what FF and ML is about. Now I'm glad I didn't and am more inclined to spend that money on lenses. Went to store to see it - didn't like the looks at all. Didn't like Nikon Z either. K3III sits next to me as I type this and it looks perfect. Is that shallow? I don't know, probably.
But I enjoy using it.
Of course, YMMV.

Norm, this* is not about stifling competition or Apple in particular. This is about reducing the amount of electronic junk created every year.

* - this being mandating the physical shape of charger contact.

How did you become a Pentaxian ?

Growing up, there was always a SLR or two around. Thanks to my father's interest in gadgets (my mother would say junk) we had all sorts of stuff lying around often never to be used so I could grab whatever I was interested in and play. It was a very steampunk childhood and probably a reason I knew from very early age I want to be an engineer.
In the 70s and early 80s he used a rather plain Practica mostly with a 50mm lens but had a couple of rather dim teles and one weird looking fisheye. All that was either lost in one of many cleaning actions or is still somewhere in a pile of other stuff no one can be bothered to touch now.
In mid 80s he got a Nikonos V for work and that was the camera I saw used most (and used myself) while living with my parents.

Fast forward to 2000 and I'm freshly employed, and feeling it's only normal that I should have a camera. Not just any camera, but a digital camera.
So I got a 0.8mp Mustek :) The brand I barely knew for cheap-ass scanners so I had to search to check whether they actually make cameras...
I had that barely usable gadget for a year or so until I lost it while commuting, which was welcome, as I immediately got something better, and then again going through a bunch of compacts (last one being HP R717).

All that time I knew I wanted a SLR but didn't want to deal with film and development. The convenience of pocketable camera, practically unlimited capacity and immediate availability on computer was too high. I was willing to forego pocketability but not at the price and capabilities of DSLRs until 2007.

I knew about the brands in the market but had no preference. In those times there were actual physical cameras in actual stores so I could go around and touch stuff and form a sort of opinion on what I saw.
So, K10D looked and felt miles better that anything else in that price range. Nikons looked plasticky and hollow, Canons the same as Nikons. Once I dug into specifications it got even clearer - while Pentax crammed everything and the kitchen sink in their cameras, Nikon stuff was crippled until reaching a significant price and Canons I couldn't even figure out*.
However even K10D was out of my budget so I went with K100D Super and dual kit lenses. Have it and love it to this day.
It was a spaceship in its segment - once I compared the feel, features and prices there simply was no option B.

After that all Pentax stuff I bought sight unseen. Never disappointed. K5II & K3III both exceeded my expectations. There is something about density of these cameras that feels reassuring.

The thing I learned to expect and respect from Pentax was, they might not have the best this or that, but what they had, they gave to you. There was no "just for a few hundred more", or "think of it as a starter model" or the most ludicrous "and then you move to L glass".

I don't know w/hat the future will bring with advances in mirrorless and computational but I'm good with what I have now and see no reason to look elsewhere.

* - thing about Canon that bugs me is that I never felt I want anything from them. I understood the segmentation model, I understood the appeal for professionals but as a hobbyist, absolutely nothing in their low to mid range ever caught my eye. Holds to this day - even with significantly more disposable income and bigger appetite for higher end stuff I just ignore Canon. I also never met anyone non-professional who shoots Canon DSLR. What am I missing here? Am I blind to something obvious to, apparently, 50% of market?

Frankly I don't think it matters on 13x18 what you used. My cousins print phone photos all the time and they look very good.

I can't comment on resolution and dynamic range as I only have K5ii to compare to, but AF performance seems rather different from my experience.
With Tamron 17-50 I had good results in AF.S both in Auto and Sel modes.
With Tamron 70-200 I was tracking my kids on bikes and playing with dogs and rarely had a miss - actually 90% of 'bad' ones were motion blur. Auto didn't work for me here and I used mostly SEL5.

Seems this place is due for a review from a non-professional, non-affiliated regular Joe. :)

I came back to trawl forums after a few years of life getting in the way of photography once K3III was close to release. I'm a hobbyist, not too ambitious or skilled one, and K5II was more than enough for me except for two things - frustration of not being able to capture the moment of kids/pets playing and being too bulky to always have around.

So K3III comes out and I have to make the call where that chunk of money goes - GRIII? A Fuji body? A7III?

Well I just went and sunk the money into K3III.
I like G3III idea but not that particular focal length. Maybe GRIV at some point.
Fuji, for all the hype, doesn't really tick my boxes. Can't push myself to like something I don't.
Now, Sony, that might happen at some point, though I'm not sure it'll be any time soon.

I guess my point is, all I needed from forums/reviews is that autofocus is up to standard for my needs. I know what Pentax does good and what not, and it's still the brand I like the most, regardless of video, card speed, mirror, weight, lack of flippy screen and whatever else.

Well, it is.
I enjoy taking photos of my kids running and jumping around with bulk being in focus without overthinking the technique and moment. My lenses focus fast without hunting. I stopped using back button and just click away.
High ISO is much better than what I had.
Camera is fast. ImageSync is nice to have.
Uses same batteries and lenses.
I even shelled out for 16-85 to get that quiet, weather sealed standard zoom.
Finally, I enjoy using it. Everything is where it should be, how it should be.

Back to the topic.
I had no issues with locking up, overheating, purple fringing, connection to ImageSync.
Haven't used tripod yet so no idea about shutter shock thing.

TLDR works perfectly for me, would buy again.

Do I *need* to upgrade from the "kit" lens?

I wish something like that was an option for me. Practically all of the photo stuff I have I saw for the very first time after I bought it.
Some years ago I could at least see something Pentax in stores, now even that's gone.

Tamron 17-50 is relatively cheap (~360 EUR new) and significantly sharper and faster than kit lens. What it lacks is a wow factor - it's a reliable workhorse lens producing sharp images. I got it in 2014 and it served me well for what it is.
Getting primes is fine and dandy (I have a bunch) but you need that standard zoom. There are pricier and better options, but this one is the cheapest of 'good' upgrades.

I don't mind being wrong, I'm just making an assumption. I also didn't say they dropped anything, I said their focus on FF side has a non-zero impact on APS-C side, if you consider production capacity as limiting factor.
I also didn't judge whether this is good/bad for RP/consumers/world peace.

Actually they do. APS-C lens can be made smaller and take the benefit of not needing to cover full FF circle. Also cheaper.
Given the limited production capacity and the focus on FF now, it's reasonable to say that's happening on expense of APS-C.

Ahem, I'd say, contrary to Saabians(?), Pentaxians are on the cheap side of not being 'Me, too!' people.

I never understood the appeal of SAAB. But then for me a car is a tool to bring me from point A to point B, so there's that....
