CP+ 2017 Pentax Interview Questions

I'm just going to add, it's not just increased desire of younger togs, but also professional necessity for some of us, who are perhaps not so young anymore :D Personally, I haven't pixel peeped anything for years and I consider my camera a "content provider". More megapixels and theoretical SR-benefits doesn't even register when I consider a camera.

And they are not going to answer specific questions about this or that coming lens or camera.

I forgot about Tavira, that is actually a nice and interesting town. Faro was a positive surprise as well. I travel a lot (!) and my trip through Portugal was part of a larger trip so I'm not easily won over.

Yes, on both accounts. The beaches are nice and often very photogenic, but the towns could be any were in the world - if you were blindfolded and taken there, your best guess would be you had landed in an unusually sunny part of England :hmm: . I only passed through Portimao so can't really speak for that one. My point is, I covered a lot of Portugal as part of a bike trip along the coast with some detours inland. And Algarve would not be very high on my list except if I wanted to relax at the beach.

Lisbon. I would resist any temptation to go to Algarve. Sintra is close to Lisbon and shock full of photogenic sights but weather is hit or miss at this time of year (I was told) - you could be lucky and find it covered in moody mist. Porto is not quite up there with Lisbon, in my opinion, but its backyard is nice.

Edit: I missed the "street" part - in Sintra you will only see buildings and tourists. So. Lisbon, Porto, perhaps Coimbra. Don't go to Aveiro - it looks nice in photos but once you are there you realize it one canal and that's it ...

It is difficult to avoid isn't? It would be almost painful just to reply with a "nice set of images there, John!" as the images deals with a "political" subject (on a very human scale) and the subject is even extremely relevant today. So what to say and do ... ?

It is cold there? It is summer (or late spring) down there, isn't? The weather sure seems nice in the photos - speaking from the north of Europe.

You must know about the Munda Biddi Trail?

Screws go loose. I don't know why or how, but of the lenses I have had on tour it is the only one that have done that. The good thing is the construction is rather simple, which makes it relatively easy to fix. But mine won't go on tour again :hmm:

I am a bike tourer too and my first tour was in Australia (Sydney going north). That is almost 20 years ago. I actually bought my first Pentax and first SLR then. Now we are many cameras and many tours later ...

I think You have done well. I know the challenges of being a tourer and tog at the same time - can't really hang around for that perfect light.

I have had my 77mm on tour as well, but from now on it will stay at home! Two times it has fallen apart now.

I have also only taken one lense apart and put it together (an a-series) and it occured to me that the only thing keeping the elements positioned is production telerances - nothing you can adjust in there.

Dude! That's amazing. I only had a glance now, but I don't think it looks too intimidating. I'll buy some Threadlock and give it a go.

Enjoy thanksgiving! We have adopted Halloween and Black Friday and a few other holidays from over there, but don't see the point in giving thanks.

But what the heck ... Thank you!

That was useful. I realize that I have treated JIS and philips as the same screw. I must look closer what I have among my watch tools, but of course most of the screwdrivers are flat head, which is what is used for watches. I think I have to realize it must be shipped up to those folks in the Swedish forest. It is going to cost a bloody fortune...

My lens looked like Mike's when I first took it to repair in India.

Yes, you are right - I downloaded the diagram dreamer.

I have some experience with manual watches and got a loupe, tiny screwdrivers and such - that's why I'm kinda hopefull :-)

I would still like to hear first hands reports with that lens! Needless to say, it is not a cheap oldie you put on the shelf for display, when you can't get the thing to focus on anything again.

Hi

I have a 77mm lth where the rear elements have come loose. It is second time this lens falls apart. First time I had in professionally fixed by some super friendly Sikhs, but to be honest they didn't do a good job (always had issues around infinity) and I suspect it fell apart again because they didn't do a good job. That, however, was a repair center in India as I was traveling when it happened.

So now I am considering if I send it off to repair again or attempt to do it myself. The lens is way out of warranty.

I have the tools and motor skills to deal with tiny screws and such, so I think I'll be able to take it apart and but it together again. However, will it perform 100% as supposed ...?! There are some guides on other lenses, but does any of you guys have experience with the 77 you can share?

Or, other option is to send it off. I have bad experience with Pentax service in Denmark, where I live, as well (they charged me more for repair than the lens, a 12-24mm, cost as new. But at least it is working now). Service is now done by a different company, which is located in some small Swedish town. Any experience with these guys? Or some alternatives - there used to be a company in Germany?

Sorry for long post!

Quoting from FB: "Sale prices will be on our website from 0.01am Friday morning. Bargains galore!"

Man, that 560mm had come down in price already last year. I am pretty sure I bought a 100mm macro during last year's sale - actually, I seem to remember the price stayed that low for a while and I grabbed one a week or so after the weekend.

Photographer rides atop a train in the Sahara to test new Leica

Bah! Sahara on a train. I have been to Sahara on my bicycle twice - cameras in panniers mounted on the bike. Crossed the Himalayas in same fashion, lots of similar trips. I am actually just back from a 7-month bike tour and all gear except one lens, which seems to be coming apart, is still working fine. My K5 have never missed a shot despite having spent quite a few years on the road now. If I was a user of almost any other maker, I would have pitched the idea but with Pentax it is evidently not worth the time.

Ok, so I'm not impressed with the "challenging conditions"-premise, but her portfolio is fine.

A joke. But a risky communication strategy as irony will be misunderstood by some and pentaxians are known to be a particularly humourless bunch, which means alienating many viewers.

Ricoh's Images new Instagram

Obviously, If the company makes interesting content users actually care to watch and read they have an open line to their customers. Who don't want that? Secondly, social media interactivity feeds back to search engines, meaning better search results. Pentax seems to recognize they have to be there (FB, Instagram etc.) but I suspect they hire a company to make a campaign and then don't follow up. This is good for the companies they hire but helps Pentax very little as Google and other search engines want to see persistence. It is as close to throwing money out the window as it gets.

Creating interesting content on a regular basis is, as Monochrome writes, something which requires dedication. While creating sexy content is very hard in many fields (attorneys and undertakers face some challenges) it would of course be possible for Pentax, having access to images from all over the world, they could create guides and tutorials and so on. I have noticed several of their competitors are active doing this form of content marketing.

I doubt it - I have been there once before. But there is a modern district too and they might have something. I plan to have a look around to see if I can find either an action camera or a drone - Sahara would be a pretty good practice area, after all. Few structures you can crash into :)

Dare I say this ... this goes on top my wishing list, in front of K1. I could really have a lot of fun with it and at last I think the quality is there.

Problem is, I really need it tomorrow as I'm just packing stuff to go to Morocco on a bike touring trip. What is the chance it is stocked among the carpets, leather babouches and ceramics in the souk of Marrakesh? :-)

My reaction is a bit different from most here - I suspect a wave of complaints here and piling up in Ricoh's inbox: "I think my lenscap is broken?? I can't get the dang thing off!! This never happened with my Canikon"

They'll love it on Dpreview. You asked for it, Ricoh!

Ha ha. To stay in the metaphor, I fear only the most desperate, old geezers are still hanging around at this time. A few will have fallen asleep or even passed away before we reach climax

But seriosuly, I agree in the analysis: Ricoh don't have aspirations of selling this camera to Casonikon owners in numbers worth talking about. It is to keep Pentax users within the fold. Maybe some time in the future... I still think their "lo fi" approach is unfortunate, because to me it displays a lack of commitment.

So. Back to the micro site for a sec: I have to admit, the only thing that really caught my attention is the humble "I" - I know, it is nerdy and few we'll appreciate it. It is just not every day a global company talks to you in the voice of a single person. Combined with the ultra basic design of the site it makes me feel I am reading a blog from 2006. Come to think about, I actually wish they would run with that idea and make a point out of it. Imagine, the next update could be just a short notice to say the real update is postponed because "I" broke her leg and have been at hospital for the full week ..."
