Sadly, this is true. The medical imaging division is the bread and butter of the company and the camera division is just something they do on the side. Some of the technologies used by the medical imaging is tested first by the camera division. In some ways the camera division is just a place to test technology for the medical division.

I think there is still a future for m4/3. Olympus is using sensors that are 1-2 generations behind what is in the current Sony or Fuji cameras. There is definitely room for Olympus to improve in terms of AF speed and tracking as well as image quality.

The samyang 35mm is and excellent lens for the money. Only complaints I ever hear are from people using it for video with some AF hunting. For still photography its hard to justify the price of the Sony Zeiss 35mm F/1.4.

---------- Post added 09-10-19 at 11:24 AM ----------

Looks like a 70mm - 180mm F/2.8 is one of the lenses. As long as its a true 180mm on the long end at the minimum focus distance.

He still owns mostly Nikon as far as I know. I think he owns a couple of different cameras including a Sony A9. I met him once backstage at a Lollapalooza tour many, many, foggy years ago when concert photography was actually a viable way to make a dollar and magazines were still being printed.

Northrop is also a photographer, but he has branched out into publishing and Youtube obviously. One of the best selling photography books on Amazon is by him. How to Create Stunning Digital Photography: Tony Northrup, Chelsea Northrup: 9780988263406: amazon.com: Books?tag=pentaxforums-20& I don't know how much wedding and portrait work he still does, but I know he still does some. He's actually a pretty down to earth guy and he's been pretty successful, but he's had to diversify. He definitely works his rear off. Creating enough content to hit 1 million subscribers and writing at least 4 books while running a photography business takes a whole lot of time, energy, creativity & dedication. Tony isn't sitting on his butt.

He does shoot professionally. I think he is best know for his concert and music photography and traveling with Perry Ferrell (Jane's Addition) back in the 1990's. He shoots sports (professional soccer and hokey) and maybe some others. Jared Polin
He has been a long time Nikon user.

Probably the last pro-grade DSLR that Nikon will make. Mechanical shutters and mirrors can't compete with mirrorless when it comes to speed. At 20fps the mirror blackout would make it impossible to track a moving subject.

Tamron 35mm f/1.4 'Optically the Best 35mm Lens You Can Get': LensRentals

I have said several times that I wish the Tamron SP lenses were available in K-mount. They are all very good lenses for the money. Tamron can make premium glass.

Canon is doing an awesome job with glass right now. They should be able to fix most of the issues with the EOS-R with firmware updates. Hopefully we see a higher end camera announced by the end of the year and they can put more pressure on Sony. Its going to be fun to watch them fight it out. Hopefully Nikon and Panasonic can carve out decent market share as well. The more options we have the better off we are.

https://www.l-rumors.com/panasonic-s1h-and-24-70mm-f-2-8-officially-announced/

Sony has been holding the A7sIII back and I'm sure they have been waiting on Panasonic to release this. We should see the A7sIII pretty soon. Sony pushed out the A7rIII and then the A7RIV once competitors were on the market.

If I was a video shooter this would be good news. Panasonic makes very good cameras.

A7RII vs K-1

As the owner of both a K-3 and the A7II - The A7II is an upgrade in image quality. Maybe not in resolution, but the colors, transitions and tones are definitely better. They both have some issues in terms of colors, but the A7II is definitely an upgrade. The new Fuji XT-3 is probably better than the A7II overall, but even the XT-3 has some issues with reds and shifting towards magenta.

If you have older manual focus glass with an aperture ring, then the A7rII is a joy to use. There are some really great lenses from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, & Contax and they all work great. If you have a lot of Pentax FF AF glass then the K-1 is the way to go. The megapixel difference and image quality is not going to make a difference. Sony video is definitely a big step up if you need it, but ergonomics and build quality of the K-1 is definitely better. You can buy the A7rii and use adapters and eventually pick up native Sony glass or some of the new Tamron or Sigma glass. Stay with Pentax and get the new D-FA* glass as it comes out.

I don't have a goal one way or the other. I'm just suggesting you look at other options and that unless he is making a lot of A3+ prints he doesn't need to spend the money on either as he won't notice much of a difference. I have no idea what he has and he didn't ask for a critique of his current system. An iPhone will make fine 8x10 prints, so we are to the point where sensor size isn't that critical.

Tamron Launching 4 New Sony FE Lenses

Tamron makes most of the kit lenses for Canon & Nikon and probably Sony. They also make the Batis lenses for Zeiss. Most of Tamron's business comes from making lenses for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax. At one point Sony was the largest share holder in Tamron.

Samyang has struggled with DSLR AF, but on Sony mirrorless they have done rather well.

Sigma is a relatively small family owned company.

The FE 35mm F/1.8 is going to be hard to beat. I know it's not a "cheap" lens, but so far all of the reviews are very positive.
Whip Smart: Sony’s new FE 35mm f/1.8 is the lens we have been waiting for – Chad Wadsworth | Photographer

Maybe Tamron can hit the under $500 price point.

I would expect that they are F/1.8 primes at the most and maybe F/2.

I'm expecting something along the lines of the Batis line or the Tamron SP lenses. That seem to be where Tamron does really well.

Not officially, but they have 3 primes coming and the 3 that make the most sense are the 35mm, 50mm, & 85mm. Tamron designed and probably manufacturers the Zeiss Batis line of lenses for Zeiss. Its possible we see Tamron versions of these designs since Tamron has the patent on them. That's assuming they didn't sell the design to Zeiss. Batis doesn't have a 50mm or a 35mm so I think Tamron will produce these.

Optically the Samyang lenses are surprisingly good and given the price they are a great value. I don't know about the longevity of the AF motors or how well they are constructed, but optically they are very good.

Tamron has the ability to make very high quality optics, but I think they struggle with being able to charge a premium as a 3rd party manufacturer. Tamron is the largest OEM lens manufacturer in the industry, so making lenses with OEM quality not a problem. I think the Tamron SP lenses for Canon/Nikon are very good lenses for the money. I wish they were available for K-mount.

With the K-1 Pentax moved to the KAF4 mount which no longer requires mechanical aperture control. Going forward it would be easy for Sigma to make lenses for K-mount, but there just aren't that many KAF4 cameras in the market for Sigma to invest in the mount. Hopefully Ricoh can change that, but they don't seem to be in any hurry.

I don't have any issues with 3rd party glass. Until the D-FA* 70-200mm came out the Sigma 85mm F/1.4 was the best lens I owned for the K-1 in terms of AF and image quality. I have the Sony-Zeiss Batis 135mm f/2.8 which is made and probably designed by Tamron, but its an excellent lens. People don't realize that most of Tamron's business is making OEM lenses for Canon/Nikon/Sony. At one point Tamron was making most if not all the kit lenses. The ART series represents an excellent value. The ART series might not be perfect for the right lens for everyone, but they are still excellent lenses. The Tamron SP lenses are also very good lenses. Some people only care about the brand name however.

The lenses are probably the single biggest reason that Canon is doing what they are doing. Sony's AF and the adapters have gotten so good that you can put Canon glass on a Sony body and in some ways the AF is better on the Sony body. I have loaned my A9 to a friend a couple of time and it performs better with Canon glass than his 5DIV does for still photography. For video work its a different story, but for stills you can put all your Canon glass on an A9 and get excellent AF. I'm not sure how well it works on the A7 series. This is a big problem for Canon. Producing a line of lenses that Sony can't adapt keeps Sony from stealing Canon customers.

There is an adapter that allows Sony lenses to be used on the new Nikon Z-series of cameras.

I don't know. It's going to cost Canon a lot of money to develop a new system to compete with Sony. This is going to force Canon to develop an all new system for a shrinking market. Canon is putting out some amazing glass for the new system, but not so amazing bodies so far. As one Canon friend said. The EOS-R isn't the best at anything (AF, resolution, video, fps, DR) but its a pretty solid camera for any Canon user. With the Canon name and marketing they will sell a lot of them.

Both Ricoh and Canon have filed patents for hybrid OVF/EVF technology, but it doesn't appear that either is close to bringing one to market. Canon is putting significant resources towards mirrorless and if they thought they could bring the hybrid OVF to market I don't think they would have gone mirrorless.
