Nature Found Breakfast - Red Tail Hawk

We have quite a few of these here (in CT). If I look up during a walk with the dog, there will usually be a raptor circling overhead. A friend who grew up in the area was telling us that as a child it was rare to see them, as DDT killed them off. They appear to have made a nice comeback.

Would love to see some bunnies here, would confuse the hell out of my mutt terrier who has no idea what to do with a ball, and does not chase the squirrels or birds.

Looked up and this big predatory bird was sitting on my lawn. Ran into my office, grabbed the KP, luckily had a zoom AF lens already on, it was set on TAv, the battery had charge. The camera was set up to bracket +- 1 stop. Remembered to back focus. Shot through the glass sliding door, just as the bird lifted up. Inspection of the flight pictures shows that my yard now has one less squirrel or chipmunk :-(

I recently went looking for more AA Eneloops, since I am playing around with multi flash setup for taking pictures for ebay, and discovered the following:

- Eneloop used to be owned and made by Panasonic after purchase from Sanyo. Due to some mergers and anti-trust related issues, Fujitsu now owns the formula/patents and plant in Japan where the 'good' batteries are made.
- Panasonic still owns the Eneloop name, and moved its production for worldwide sales to China except for the batteries it sells in Japan that are required to be made for it in Japan by Fujitsu.

- Current Fujitsus are the same as the old Eneloops
- Panasonics sold in Japan need to be made at the old plant in Japan.
- Panasonic Eneloop Pro (black) High Capacity 2550 batteries are made in Japan by Fujitsu using the old formula
- new Panasonic Eneloop 2100 are made in China and are as (un)reliable as other Chinese rechargables. Read the Amazon reviews.

I bought AA Fujitsu 1900s from Amazon.

Picked up an SMC Pentax 35mm F3.5 for $1 at an auction. It was mislabelled as an Yashica as it had a Yashica lens cap. Not tried it out yet. Also got 2 Canon Model 7 rangefinders and lenses in India from a family friend, and waiting for a friend to bring them to the US.

Hello. An update. So after a month of so of soaking in Weldon-3, when I checked this am and shock the bottle, the 2 lens elements separated!

So the Weldon works. I initially had it in a glass jar, which dried out, so I switched to one with a better lid, and also zip locked it. That seems to have kept the fluid intact.

Now to fish them out, clean them, figure out which is on top, and then reglue them!

Can't help myself. Picked up a Super Program (works perfectly, 8/10), M-50 2.0 (a little fungus); A-50 2.0 (broken, focus ring jammed from fall), Tamron SP 90 f2.5 (a little fungus does not seem to impact), Underground 28 f2.8 macro lens made in Japan (what is this?), ME Winder II, AF200 flash, about 10 filters, all for $70 and 2.5 hours of driving and gas. I wanted the Super Program and the second Tamron 90, so it was worth the drive for me. For a change, the smart owner had stored everything without the batteries.

On the flip side, the "good condition" ebay K-5 and DA* lens turned out to be garbage/scam, and I'm returning it. The diopter adjustment slider was broken, and the pictured DA* 16-50 lens was not sent, instead a 18-55 kit lens arrived.

The SMC-F 1.7x AF adapter + the Tamron SP 90mm is killer! The KP will work even in TAV mode with the AF adapter.

Haha. I keep telling myself this. And then I bought a K5 with DA* 16-50 lens (that I already have).

The Nikon DF looks amazing. It's exactly what I want! Was not aware of it - left the Nikon world in 2000 when I got my first Canon Rebel and switched to digital.

Thank you for pointing this camera out to me.

I like hacking things and might play with incorporating the Raspberry Pi camera into a Pentax film body. I have a K2 that is supposed to be 'non-repairable'. Or will buy a DF for my Adaptamatic and Adaptall lenses or if I decide to go down the Nikkor lens rabbit hole.

I switched back to Pentax in Dec 2020 - I was only using my Canon 7D and various L lenses for taking ebay pictures to sell stuff, and not taking any real photographs - decided I did not like the ergonomics and size. This resulted in switching back to the Pentax world (that I had left in 1988), and I am having a blast and have acquired a LOT of legacy lenses to try out.

I find the Pentax DSLRs to be significantly more aligned with my hand size and the way I think, and enjoy using them a lot, and a lot more than the Canon, but still find them too clunky when compared to the MX. And the M-series prisms and focusing screens are so much nicer.

I've tried customization on the KP using the U buttons - I have a terrible memory after a brain injury, and cannot remember what I set. So I decided instead to have more bodies that are permanently customized.

This is the plan for now: I now have 4 digital bodies - k-x (need to repair battery compartment), K-5 (on the way), K-3 and KP. I like the KP buttons the most, so it will be my primary digital camera with a pocketful of small limited AF primes and light zooms (DA*21, 40XS, DA* 16-50, DA50-300 so far). The K-3 is being used on a DSLR scanning rig with a manual macro lens, but will also be the tripod body and used with heavier longer prime and zoom lenses. The K5 will be my M42 lens body for my Adapt-a-matic long primes and zooms (135/200/300), and the k-x will become the Pentax-M and A body, with both the K5 and K-x getting MX like customization.

So when I shoot manual, I'll also take along the appropriate dslr for the lens set I am carrying.

I've been shooting with the MX and ME this week, and really love the light small body compared to my DSLRs. KP, K3 and k-x. What I would love is a digital MX - ie a tiny SLR with 2 basic manual controls (ie like MX - ISO and shutter speed), a viewfinder manual meter, with the lens manually setting the aperture, raw saving, and AF. No need for rear screen and all the DSLR controls and image processing, auto exposure, and flexibility. I prefer to make my own over/under f-stop decisions on the fly through the viewfinder, for which the MX is perfect, rather than lowering the camera, hitting buttons and turning knobs, etc. I suppose bracketing can do some of this, but I like to think about the exposure I want to take and do it on the fly, quickly, instead of missing the shot by fiddling.

Found a seller of computer monitors from a business that went under, and went to pick up some Vesa stands. There was a pile of electronic recycling outside the garage, had been in the snow and rain for months. From the pile I snagged 2 Dell i5-4300 Latitude laptops, an Acer monitor, and an Apple Thunderbolt monitor that the kid selling claimed did not work. Laptops both worked, although I screen is a little damaged, and I reinstalled Win10 on them, and ordered more RAM for one of them. Good enough for Radio Paradise listening and posting on PF. The Acer monitor has water inside the screen, works, but shows bubbles, like an old screen saver. I'm leaving it on, hoping the heat will dry out the water. The Apple Thunderbolt monitor works just fine after being out in the elements for 6 months - its well sealed! These should fund a few more lenses!

Interesting. I looked these up (tokina and vivitar series 1), they are 2x-3x the price of the Tamron.

I also have a Vivitar 100 F3.5, guess I will be selling that.

Does heat work on the 100 f4? I'll try it on my second lens. All my reading suggested that hot water works on older lenses that were joined using balsam, but lenses joined using optical glue required chemical dissolving.

I'm trying to repair my SMC-M 100 F4 Macro - typical lens glue separation issue. Very easy to remove the faulty element. I have it soaking in Weldon 3, which should dissolve the old optical glue. I'll post more to this thread once the glass is apart.

Just got this incredible lens a few days ago - Tamron SP 90mm F2.5 adaptall-2. It came with lens hood and extension ring. Took a few quick shots with it, handheld, that are attached - totally unprocessed except for size reduction of the jpgs.

This is our first dog. We've had Emma, an 11yr old Jack Russell Terrier, visit us for extended periods (weeks and months) over the past few years when her mom was travelling (my daughter's boyfriend's mom), and we decided we should get a dog too. My kids are a little pissed - they wanted a dog growing up, but could not commit to taking care of any pet - ie walking it - so we never got one. Now that they are off in college and grad school, we've gotten one.
