Kp or K3II

FYI, the KP battery grip lets you use the K5 type battery OR the KP battery (which is awesome). The grip has made the KP a much improved camera from an ergonomic point of view - I liked it quite a lot without, but with, it's fantastic. And the flippy screen would be very helpful for street IMO (I don't do much street, but I do know from event photography, having a cam up to your face can be a dead giveaway. Taking pics from live view, focus peaking, and using the live view zoom helps a ton. By the way, I've been shooting in RAW+jpeg so I can tune the cam to a contrasty black and white (saved as jpg) and the RAW comes with all color info so I can do whatever. The view on the back screen is B&W in live view, so that could be a minus depending on your priorities.

Also, I think the KP is slightly quieter than my K3 (I don't have a k3ii) so that could be good too. And add to all this the KP has 5 axis stabilization for camera at your waist or shoot-and-run shots and I think the k3ii has 3 axis. And the 3rd control wheel on the KP comes in handy at times too.

They're both great cams, but IMO, if you're not doing lots of action (where having a big buffer would help) or lots of astro, the KP fits the bill for street a bit better.

How do you deal with people looks?

So first off, I really like that picture. It's a unique perspective of something that I take for granted everyday. But you've caught it in a compelling and unique way. And that's great!

So you know you have an eye for capturing good photos that you will appreciate. If others like your work too, that's icing. But the important bit is that you're creating things that you like, that you think have potential of being compelling. Your desire to create should be something that you embrace. So it doesn't matter that someone else doesn't understand what you see, it matters only what you see and what you hope to create.

Perhaps at some point, someone will ask what you see and will try to understand. Or maybe someone will see the finished product hanging on a wall or on some random forum and say, "Never looked at that this way before, but it's pretty cool." You don't necessarily need this validation, but sometimes it's nice to share a feeling with someone else. Especially with people who share the same hobby as you, or even better, have the same aesthetic as you.

But eventually you'll get to a point where you will KNOW what you love about photography and that it's about what you love and what you strive for. And that will be enough to not care what other people don't understand. I used to get pretty self conscious about snapping random things, but now that I've got a pocket full of images that I enjoy every time I see them, I've affirmed that I am a photographer and that's what I do. It doesn't harm anyone and it helps me value my life. That's it, that's all.

If you don't need auto focus and you don't mind stop down metering, the Helios 44-2 58mm f2.0 is a pretty amazing choice too. It has a very unique rendering of out of focus highlights in the background that some people like. This lens can often be found for around $50 (used) and you'd need an m42 adapter for about $40 if you want the Pentax one. So that would leave you about $500 to buy a good used 50-135 maybe :)

Digital Trends - K-1 MkII Review with DFA50 f1.4

You Tube

Seems like a review that tracks with other reviews on the k1ii, so nothing great here.

Wish Pentax would take away the negatives to give reviewers more time to talk about the positive - iso 800,000, non-tripod pixel shift, etc. Reviewers always try to find some fault with something and if you give them an easy target they will talk about it more than they should. I mean who would "need" to shoot at iso 800000 and yet they mention how unusable it is like 3 times in a 9 minute video. High ISO is awesome on the k1 series, but when you set expectations above where they should be, they will focus on that instead of what's really good.

The reviewer did like the DFA50 though...

For several years, a group of friends would head out of Portland into the Mt Hood National Forest to camp for a few days along the Clackamas River. There were great hikes to the hot springs, opportunities to fly fish, we ate amazing meals, played games and hung around the campfire. Here are a few pictures to celebrate friendship and a beautiful country:

For macro photography, having a tilting screen can be extremely helpful. Even if your knees aren't as bad as mine (too much soccer as a kid), being able to see what you'll get without putting your belly in the mud is great. One of the reasons I went with the KP was that it's stabilization was a bit better than the K3, k3ii, or K-70 - it and the K-1 are the first Pentax cameras with 5 axis stabilization. For macro work, this could be very helpful. The K-70's articulating screen is multi axis, whereas the KP only goes up and down, not side to side. So depending on your priorities, one may be better than another. If, for example, you use a tripod most of the time, then stabilization isn't that important. But if you like to use extension tubes handheld, then better stabilization may be a priority.

Really as a advanced amateur, any of the Pentax bodies from the K5iis to current (maybe not the KS-1) would be great. Good luck with your decision!

Hey,
Just found this deal:
Google Express is offering 25% Off (Max $100 Discount) when you apply promo code EXTRA25 during checkout. Shipping is free on orders of $35+ (may vary by store).

So I wasn't expecting to find photography gear, but I typed in KP Grip and it came up elgible for %25 off of the normal price of $229 and it's being fulfilled by Adorama. I've been waiting forever to get a deal on one of these so I can use my K-1/ K-3 batteries in it so I'm pretty :D:D:D

Looks like you can buy items from more than one store and your whole cart will be eligible for 25% off (so some stuff was shipping from walmart and some other store as well as my Adorama stuff).

I didn't check to see if there was other photography stuff, but maybe.... or just use it for stuff that you want/need!

Anyways, hope this is helpful for some of you...

Is the GRII Premium kit worth it? @ $996

looks like the viewfinder goes for $175, the wide angle lens also for $175, and the adapter is $50, so roughly $400. I could see myself using the wide angle and adapter for sure for landscapes and architecture. The eyepiece... not sure I'd get $175 worth out of it. If the price included a couple extra batteries (Which I assume it would need), I'd probably be more tempted... I think I'm backing away slowly :)

Is the GRII Premium kit worth it? @ $996

Hi all,
I'm thinking about using the funds from a photo gig to buy a GRII and I see the Premium Kit is on sale at Adorama and B&H for $996, or about $400 more than just the GRII at those same sites.

So the Premium Kit comes with the optical finder, wide angle adapter, case, strap, some bling rings, and lens hood.

Premium Kit GRII defined

I do like to shoot wide angle a lot so having the wide angle adapter would be nice to have, but I have to think when would I have the GRII and not the KP or K-1? When I'm packing light and don't want stuff bulging out of pockets or having to carry a camera bag. And do I really need an optical finder? I do use the Q quite often and not having an optical viewfinder hasn't been that big of a deal.

So those of you who have a wide angle adapter or optical viewfinder - can you tell me what you like and perhaps address the concerns of size of these accessories that I have? And do you think the value proposition is right to get the premium kit over just the grii by itself?

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinion!

Trying to get back into photography...

Do what you love. Be where you want to be at the best time to be there. Be around people who you find interesting or that you like. Go to an event that inspires you. Enjoy food at the restaurant that you've been wanting to go to. And then take a photo of it. I find it easier to take a photo of things that I love, things that I'm connecting with. And that's what I love about photography - it gets me thinking of the things I find joy in and then I try to figure out how to take a photo of it.

And sometimes I purposely restrict my choices by, for example, just bringing 2 prime lenses. I've found this restriction of choice makes it easier to take photos and not agonize for too long of what would be "perfect". Instead of looking for the finish line, enjoy the journey. And if you're combining the things you love with photography, at the very least you'll be enjoying the things you love :)

While I do agree with many sentiments mentioned in this thread to a certain degree, I'd like to say that this message itself is encouraging. I think in the not so distant past, we may not have received a message like this directly and I do very much appreciate this increased communication with us. If the roadmap were adhered to more reliably, perhaps these communications wouldn't be necessary, but it's a time in the camera market with fairly rapid changes occuring which perhaps is forcing reconsidering plans. Of course the problem is that these roadmaps have set expectations with fans and if they aren't met, a corrosive disappointment can set in. So messages like this are good in that expectations are being seen to be managed in order for the fan base to stay positive.

I hope Pentax/ Ricoh also begin to find ways of getting buzz around their products and new features (particularly innovative ones) to keep Pentax in the mind of more photographers. It seems that this is not the culture of Pentax, but I think they should be proud of the innovations and products they have developed and have a more sustained effort to get more photographers engaged.

Mind giving us an idea of what kinds of things they weren't listening to you about (without violating an NDA of course)? Can you give us a sense of how they respond to what you think Pentax needs to do to grow their biz?

Sorry to hear you go - you've been a good ambassador and have been as open with us as you could be. Of course you are a pro and you need to have support to carry your craft forward so I can respect your decision. Best wishes man!

K70 or KP

That's a smaller difference than I thought - I know my k3 isn't as well stabilized as the KP and I was thinking the k70 had the same SR as the K70. Sorry for the misinformation.
