Thanks Racer X. Your reply came to me today from old email subscription. I've more or less left all the photo forums. Thought it would be a fitting time to wind up the old year and tell the group what has been going on.

First my thanks to Pentax forum for all the help they gave me learning digital. I started Feb of 2012 seriously reading up on it. I took my first digital pix with a *ist in March. Got a scanner a few months later and went to work on the old negs. Just in Nov 2012 I learned how to spot, dodge and burn with LR. So it has been a slow transition for me.

The reason I left the forums was due to censorship. Either nude pix issues or I could not post work from other togs to discuss. Forums are not that conducive to serious discussion I've found. So I took up home at Tumblr. (Tried low censorship Deviantart first, but trying to post pix here is hellish, so gave it up.) Anyway, Tumblr has tons of freedom to post and say whatever you like. But Tumblr's downfall is there is nil discussion. Here is some of my current and old work.

In Nov I was hit with the news that my wife and daughter-in-law will trash all my photos when I kick off. (They hate my photography.) So I set out to archive as much as I could before that day comes and all my pix end up in the nearest dumpster.

I am in contact or will be in contact with museums throughout the US and Europe. So far have wiggled my way into 3 museums, but just started early Dec. Museums can be tough to deal with for us togs. (Unless your a big name tog.) For us no-name togs they want large donations of $ with gifts of prints to pay for curatorship, conservation, scanning costs etc. So you can forget making truck loads of $ unless your Cindy Sherman. Bottom line is...if you don't have to donate $ for them to accept your gift...your a success!

I am also coming out with a book (hopefully) in 2014 about Hollywood and L.A. Hardcover 10 x 12 and maybe a smaller softcover version as well. Also looking into gallery sales for editioned prints. Here is a joke. One book printer I talked with said they could not do my book. Their partner / binder is Amish and when they saw my pix they refused to bind the book!

None of my push to get my work out there is to make $$ - just interested in preservation. But f I did take in some $, I'd appreciate it to help pay for the $650 a pop ink change in my Epson printer. Pro printing is something guys. I even have to buy a $40 ink trash pot when my printer fills them up from charging the head!

So, that about sums up my 11 month journey as a retread film tog getting into digital this past year. Started with Pentax, still shoot Pentax but also branched out to 645D, M43, RD1 and FujiX. (Yep, I had to give up on the AA battery dream. Most of my cams run on non AA batts.)

And special thanks to Les Krims and Frank Grace / Trig for being HDR mentors to me. I luv the hyper real street HDR. That is where most of my work is nowadays. (Pole dancer @ Tumblr is one of my fav's.) Well guys and gals I got to get back to printing - got 3 portfolios to finish to go out to more museums.

Hope you have a happy and healthy new year! And it is low stress and at least 'some' of your dreams come to fruition guys and gals! (It IS impossible to have it all.)

The image is from a well known photography book bought at Amazon. I had permission to use it.

Just like I'm sick of politics, so it goes with writing about man-made religions.

I used to write extensively on both these subjects a few years ago. But one day it occurred to me...slacker your an ole cruster...not much time left to be a good slacker...better get to work. As such...I'm retired and try to work hard to be a good slacker.

In any case, a lot of people need their religious beliefs to make it through life. For as far as we know we are the only animal that knows we will die one day. We also have a lot of emotions wrapped up in our big brains. Religion comforts us with the hope that we will be reunited with our loved ones some day.

An on the political side of things. Religion was invented as a way to control the lower masses while the select few grab power, pillage and tax the masses. With religion, the lower rungs have the carrot dangled in front of their faces and if they stay in line they have 'some hope' of their reward once they are dead. But alas, they never seem to get a single bite of the carrot.

With kids I don't like going into too much detail for the problems mentioned in this thread. Luckily I'm never asked. But if asked I will give my two cents. If the parents don't like it...too fudging bad. It takes energy and disruption of inner peace to lie. It takes no energy to tell the truth.

The philosopher finds joy in discovering truth....that is where I rest my head.

Wow SS, you giving up cams once your out of film? You wont move on to dig? That is very hard core.

How can you give it all up? If your a real tog, which you sound like, it is your life.

I said I would give up cams if I was forced back into the wet darkroom, but that is a little different. Digital simplifies. Film complicates. (And dig has the bonus of not having to pour all that crap down our drains as well!) I would not go back to film, I'd hate it. Although, I do love the look film gives you. Now if I had a butler to process and print OK, film would be doable.

I'm not a slacker in the wet darkroom either. I used to do it all back in the day All aspects of BW / E-6 / nitrogen burst processing / C-41 / Type C / Type R / Dye Transfer / Litho / Halftones. But doesn't mean I like doing it.

You don't have to go obsolete with dig. I just bot some Epson RD-1's. They are only 6mp and years old. But they are beautiful rangefinder throwbacks to the old days. Check them out.

They should satisfy you if you like rangefinder style shots. They do have some obsolence built in though. Can't go above 2 gig cards. So have to stock a supply as one still has to be aware of disc products.

Just how it is in our world.

1) we keep advancing

2) got to keep the new engineers fresh out of school working. First thing they do is redesign and discontinue.

Nope, the original ones were 1gig. Although I think it may run in 2 gig. But it has never been updated. Put a 4 gig in it and it says error. I have an Samsung which is the same thing more or less. Someone updated it. It takes 4 gig.

I never tried it. I thought I'd pull out my old istD to test the waters. What a pain in the ass it has been.

I got an old istD that has 1.0 in it. I spent hours and hours fooling with it. Can't get it to update a thing. Tried connecting it and doing the card, tried the card alone. Why do you make this stuff so hard Pentax? Nothing wrong with the cam. It is like new, bot new and has about 2000 actuations.

Now, I've never updated any cam firmware other than Tom Tom GPS. They are kinda crappy too. I am still not sure if it updated it or not. So maybe the other cam companies are just as bad as Pentax. I don't know? But in this case it is a very poor and disapointing experience Pentax.

I'd just like it if the ist used cards over 1.0 gig. That was all I wanted Pentax . It is less hassle to just buy some back up 1gig cards than to fool with this pain any longer.

Pentax, I'm no computer genius, but your stuff should be designed for the low end people as well as the smarties K.I.S.S. I know this is an ancient cam Pentax, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

When things get too complex it wrecks the experience, unless you thrive on complexities and hassles. A better design would have been to plug your cam in and get the computer to update it with a simple yes or no.

You get all types on the forums. But I don't care. I always like to check into complaints. So I looked at the size reduction from my originals to what ended up here to see if the scoffers have any credibility.

The RAW was about 55mb. I uploaded about 900kb jpeg to photobucket. What came out here was a little over 300kb

What is that? About 1/2 of 1% is left from the original? Plus JPEG destruction? I think it is still fantastic res for a 99.5% loss from the original.

And it is good to have pixel peepers like these guys. I never noticed the spider webs. Too focused on the interesting patina of the metal. The webs could have come out better on a tripod and a small aperture. But anyone can see the DOF is very shallow.

Anyway, let me know how to post the TIFF if you want to see em guys. (gals)

I get my lenses dirty a lot of the time. I like a UV if possible. Rather clean the filter than the lens.

This weekend got some grease spots on the front element at a street fair. No filter allowed on that lens. Took grease off with Q tip and cleaner. Then recleaned with cleaner and lens paper. Wish I was able to use a filter on that lens, but had to make do.

A lady hit my lens with her cane. Didn't hit the glass. But If I had a filter on it and she hit the glass filter may have helped some. I've always used UV or skylight on a lens. Just like to be careful.

Depth of field

Shot fairly wide open. The screws are sharp as hell in the TIFF.

Also, you can't cut a pix down to post here and expect to keep every spec of detail. But what is in focus is very sharp in the original RAW/TIFF.

Sure one should not use filters for no reason. I had 3 filters on by mistake. I use a UV all the time for protection and that is about it.

Just saying some togs fear using a filter at all for fear of degradation. As I said the TIFF is much sharper. If you can tell me how to post it I will be glad to.

That would be a good experiment in itself. Showing loss of IQ comparing original to one reduced and hosted by photobucket. I tried to make them as big as I could. But photobucket stalled a few times with just a slightly larger image.

Don't know? Once I get a lens clean and free of dust I never remove the UV unless I have a good reason. I'm not that motivated to remove the UV.

Between JPEG, reducing and photobucket the IQ has been cut a lot. The TIFF's are about double sharp as the ones I posted here. Don't know how to post the TIFF files.
