Google translate shows the announcement as saying "We are planning to increase our products and contents more and more in the future. Maybe you may mute secret information that can not be said else, so why not check it often?" Sounds like this is maybe gearing up for the new camera to be announced?

Ricoh to get out of camera business?

Ricoh has already put out a statement refuting this.

http://www.itmedia.co.jp/news/spv/1704/12/news063.html

Google translate:

Ricoh's public relations office commented, "While narrowing down product lineups, we are planning to expand high value-added models for individuals in the future."

On April 12, Ricoh refuted "not a fact" about some reports on the same day that the company is considering withdrawing from personal camera business. "Although we will pursue high value-added products by focusing on product lineups, we are not planning on withdrawing from individuals, and we plan to expand high-value-added models for individuals in the future" (Ricoh Public Relations Office).

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun morning edition on the 12th said, "Ricoh will shrink the camera business, we will consider consumer camera business with price competition intensely including withdrawal, concentrate on business use such as for in-vehicle use." The company announced on December 11 that it would record an impairment loss of about 10 billion yen, saying "expected earnings can not be expected for the digital camera business."

The company's press office announced on February 12 against the interview of ITmedia NEWS, "Our lineup of personal digital cameras is based on high-end models such as" GR ", products that make full use of features such as the THETA" all-sky camera " At the center, there are few general compact digital cameras (competing with smartphones intensely) competing in the price. In the digital camera business, we announced impairment on 11th, narrowing down the product lineup and pursuing high value added products Although I do not think about withdrawing from individuals, I plan to extend the value-added model for individuals in the future. D-FA* 85mm f1.4 also coming

Refreshes or replacements of existing lenses don't necessarily appear on the roadmap. The 55-300 PLM came out of nowhere, as did the 18-50 RE. I still wouldn't be surprised if we eventually see some previously unmentioned updates of the existing compact lenses. I think having this new huge glass as an option is great for the brand. I also love the old compact glass, can still buy it, and don't share the worries that Pentax won't make new versions because I don't expect that to be the case.

Interesting. They switched which wide lens will have a large aperture. The previous roadmap had the ultrawide as a large aperture lens and the wide angle lens didn't mention aperture, but now the wide angle has that designation while the ultrawide doesn't.

From my understanding 135 is where it starts being considered a regular telephoto, though I could be wrong. I think medium telephoto would probably be between 75 and 130.

Looking at the roadmap, and going by traditional naming conventions for full frame, we should expect a lens 24mm or wider with a large aperture (maybe 1.4 or 1.8, possibly f2), something between 28mm and 35mm with f2 or slower, probably a 50 1.4, and something between an 85 1.4 or 105 f2.

Pentax "KP" DSLR registered in Indonesia

There's another thread with specs, which says you'll be able to get 1/24000 shutter speed with electronic shutter. That electronic shutter should allow silent or near silent shooting if you're willing to deal with the tradeoffs of using it (ie, shooting in live view, etc).

It's a second programmable function button. The first is the "Raw/Fx" button near the flash button on the side of the camera. The K-1 also has the Fx2 button functionality, on the bottom button of the four way d pad.

I'm curious to see the specs. The features it obviously lacks from the K-3ii (no top LCD, it has a smaller battery) are also lacking in pro offerings from non-Canikon manufacturers (XT-2, Em-1, Gh4/5, A7 series). If the performance standards are up to par, and they've managed to make a powerful yet small K mount camera, I can see why they may have taken this route instead of trying to make another 7d/D500 competitor, given their market share. Remember that the K-S1, which the KP looks comparable to in size from the leaked pictures, was actually very similar in size to (or smaller than) the mirrorless cameras I just listed. And for those of us that prefer the size in hand of a DSLR, the front grip L option and battery grip look more than capable of filling that requirement. If this does indeed replace the K-3ii, some K-3ii owners may not want to upgrade, but some may. This camera might be something that looks like it might appeal to a larger group (comprised of both mirrorless and DLSR shooters) than any existing camera Pentax offers.

If the performance specs don't exceed or match the K-3ii, I take that all back (and also I think video needs to be improved if they seriously want to take on top of the line mirrorless cameras). But I see some sense in what they're doing is what I guess I'm trying to say.

The original source (Nokishita-Camera.com) who uncovered the KP registration tweeted a couple more KP things a few days ago. Unless Google's translation is wrong (Twitter's built in translation is unintelligible), it sounds like this will replace the K3ii. I can't tell from Google's translation whether he says a silver KP will be announced now or at a later date. The translations from Google are:

"Confirmation of Pentax KP's coming soon. It is a class equivalent to K - 5 and K - 3 II on the merchandise classification, and it is not an entry model such as K - S2 or K - 70.# Quick News # Rumor"

"Confirm that Pentax KP and a new battery grip D - BG 7 will be announced next week. Silver (number unknown is unknown) is likely to be announced together (undetermined) this time. # Follow-up # rumor"

Japanese website Nokishita Camera is reporting that Pentax has registered a DSLR called the KP in Indonesia:

???????「PENTAX KP」???????????|?????????

Google translates the article as:

"Pentax's unpublished single lens reflex camera "PENTAX KP" has been registered as a certification body in Indonesia.

Indonesia POSTEL (line 95)
Company name: Ricoh Imaging Co., Ltd.
Device name: Single lens reflex camera
Country of origin: Philippines
Registration date: January 11, 2017

It seems that Pentax is preparing a new K mount machine. I think that it is not a rumored vintage mirrorless camera because it is a single lens reflex, but I am looking forward to announcing what kind of model KP will be."

Has anyone tried this lens on a K-50 with a dead aperture block since the firmware update? I'd be curious to see if KAF4 lenses can bring those old paperweights back to life, especially if all new lenses come with KAF4 support.

What camera?

I used to have a K-x and switched to an Olympus micro four thirds in 2013. I also had only a couple Pentax K mount lenses at the time, and much more invested in m42. I really liked my Olympus, but I missed my Pentax much more. So only a few months after selling my K-x (and one K mount lens), I bought back into Pentax. I loved the portability of the Olympus and the color was always spot on, but Pentax IMO had much better controls, and image quality was generally better (I never did get too deep down the rabbit hole of m4/3 lenses though). One of my biggest issues with switching to m4/3 and using my old m42 lenses was the 2x crop factor of the smaller m4/3 sensor. Not even my 20mm was a wide angle on that camera. It took a lot of getting used to my favorite lenses behaving very differently, and that was ultimately the dealbreaker for me. I did keep my Oly for a couple years as a backup camera, but I only used it sparingly. I have tried other mirrorless systems, and I do like Fujis for use with m42 lenses, particularly a small camera with EVF like the XT10, but I still like the Pentax ergonomics, build, and controls more.

Along those lines, one thing to consider regarding the K-3 is that it is a larger and heavier camera than the K-x. When I went back to Pentax, I went with a K-5iis first and I missed the smaller body of the K-x, so I sold that and got a K-01, and then a K-50. If you think you might not like a larger body than the K-x, other cameras to consider would be the K-S2 and K-70. The K-S2 is close in size and weight to the K-x, and the K-70 is close in size (but heavier).

Ricoh want's to go mirrorless? With X-mount/Fujifilm? at least 2 years away.

The rumor as we know it says Fuji is the most likely candidate to partner with Ricoh, but I wonder if Olympus is another possibility. They filed patents for full frame mirrorless primes this year (20mm 1.4, 24 1.4, 28 f2, and 35 1.4), and have a recent history of sharing a mount with another company (Panasonic, who we also know is co-developing organic sensor technology with Fuji). Just food for thought.

I can see why a matching of these two companies would work. Think of it in terms of the days of m42. It would give customers a lot more choice, which would probably go a long way to attract more customers overall to the system by filling in weaknesses that might normally keep customers away. Fuji goes retro with their body, Ricoh goes modern with their body. Fuji develops more wide primes, particularly on the fast side of things compared to Pentax, while Ricoh/Pentax does more telephoto and zoom. You can choose whether you want the color of X-Trans versus the more common Bayer array. Stabilized lenses from Fuji versus stabilized sensor from Ricoh. This could be a great system for a lot of people. It would also create an ecosystem that might be more attractive to third parties. The more people using the ecosystem, the more chances you have to sell bodies and/or lenses to customers than if they were using another mount. The biggest downside to a system from these two companies right now would probably be that neither company is known for video, which would be something at least one of the companies would have to improve if they wanted to make a catch-all system that could attract the masses.

Sigma has been saying they'll only produce specific lenses for K mount when they see enough demand for that lens. With the amount of non-Pentaxians I've seen the last few days musing over making the switch and getting a K-1 if they could put Sigma's newer Art lenses on it, I'm hopeful Sigma will start seeing that demand and producing more lenses for us.

CP+ Interview Question Suggestions

1) Any chance the pixel shift's electronic shutter feature will be extended to normal shooting? (for instance, Olympus and Leica have the option to use an electronic shutter to get speeds up to 1/16000, which may not be more than a gimmick, but it seems like it could have some use)

2) With the 645Z and now the K-1 (plus fast zooms), Pentax is making a strong play on the professional photographer market. Does Pentax (or Ricoh in general) have any plans to take on the professional videographer side of the business?

3) With Pentax focusing exclusively on mirrored products the last year plus, and Ricoh giving not much more than a slight update to the GR in 2015, can we expect any innovations from your mirrorless products in 2016 (Q-related, GR, something else?)?

4) Could you give yourself a big pat on the back from me? I'm very excited about the K-1, well done!

The 24-70 had Anomalous Dispersion glass in the Pentax version, which wasn't in the Tamron. That's generally a more expensive material than the regular glass it replaced (though IDK if it's worth the price difference). Until we see the construction of the new 15-30, we probably shouldn't be quick to compare the prices.

Picture of K-1

Going by features, the DSLRs closest to the K-1 would be the Canon 5d3 and Nikon D810. The K-1 is 136.5 x 110 x 85.5 mm and weighs 925 g. The 5d3 is 152 x 116.4 x 76.4 and weighs 950 g. The D810 is 146 x 123 x 81.5 and weighs 980 g. So the K-1 is smaller and lighter than those.

Compared to Nikon and Canon's smaller full frame cameras with lesser specs, it's closer in size but weighs more. (Canon 6d is 144.5 x 110.5 x 71.2 and weighs 770 g, and Nikon D750 is 140.5 x 113 x 78 and weighs 840 g).

Also, if Sony is keeping the A99 around, that measures in at 147 x 111.2 x 78.4 and weighs 812 g.

They are still $45 on Adorama. For some reason, they seem to often be less than competitors on that adapter (I got mine about a year and a half ago from them for $30, when BH had them at $50).
