Not exactly the right place for this, but since I also own a Vivitar/Kiron 28/2, how would you compare the fa* 24/2, the sigma 28/1.8 & the kiron lens? IQ wise only, as I suspect the AF is better on the FA* & sigma ;)

And bump !

The AF280T works perfectly fine with my K-7. It's obvioulsy not that powerful, but quite enough for use in my flat, in bounce. Exposure is reliable (synch x or manual / 1/180 + f4 to f8 - very easy & fast to learn what works in specific conditions, so not much trial & error to do...).

Try it, you'll be surprised!

Should I expect the viewfinder on the K20D to be better then my D40?

Yes, indeed - I have a K-7 & O-ME53. It's basically a magnifying glass, it helps seeing better the center, but you lose a bit on the sides, especially the viewer finder info at the bottom of the screen. But it's not unworkable, need to move your eye around if you need to see everything (it slows down a bit phototaking...)... I'm used to it, but I was considering removing it. Will try and report one of these days...

Do I need a new lens

Take a look at the items for sale here. On top of the suggested lens, you may want to look into the Sigma 24-60 or 24-70 f2.8. Those should give you better results... unless you have a back-front focus issue as explained Tommot1965, on the body itself.

Just in case:
IQ - image quality, as far as I know :)

I'd say, two possible answers:
- Arg, no! Pentax is doomed!
- Standard product life cycle, it'll be there while the stocks last, since it's been replaced in its range...

(Same question was asked when the K20D was retired I guess?)

Perfect Future Travel Lens Set?

Just a thought & question: weather-sealing does not necessarily fully protect from corrosion resulting from salt, or damage from sands? I mean, there's so much a lens & body can endure, isn't it?

I have seen weather-sealed Canon L glass in plastic rain covers for a reason, I believe. And those are cheap. So going weather-sealing might not be enough ;)

just my 2 cents & little experience here, I only go out when the sun shines :D

K5 as a Nikon d300s/7000 alternative

I have no experience with Nikon gear, so I refrain from doing straight comparison btw bodies, brands, etc.. but before you switch, do your math: selling a body & lenses, and buying new lenses & body will cost a bit and much more than just getting a new body... On top of that, if you're happy with your lens & flash, why switch?

To me, the Ltd are the reasons to move to Pentax, but that's a relatively expensive reason. For some others, it's Shake-Reduction & weather-sealing... See what is important to you... I see that the 16-50 & 50-135 are mentioned - they exist for Nikon, in a cheaper, not weather-sealed Tokina version... DA12-24 ditto...

To answer more directly what I can answer...
- K5 having cropped sensor as well? So, attaching 50mm lens to it will give me ~85mm zoom?
[Eljaco] Yes - but 50*1.5 = 75 angle of view, not 85 ;)

- RAW files (or however they called in Pentax world) - what software could be used to process/batch process them? I like Capture NX2, but that`s something for Nikon
[Eljaco] Personally i'll favor Lightroom 3, but they are cheaper alternatives: DxO 6.5, Bible Pro, Silypix, etc.. Just like for Nikon or Canon or Sony... in fact :)

- What Nikon camera is direct competitor to K5? I saw comparisons with d300s, d7000 and even really good and expensive d7000...
[Eljaco] To me the K5 sits in between D7000 & D300s... If you decide to keep Nikon, consider a D300, shouldn't be much different from a D300s IQ wise... & cheaper (compare the feature set, and see if the differences are important enough for you...).

- I have big hands - is k5 + grip is handy enough for people with sports background?
[Eljaco] We can't decide for you, so go and try it. The best camera is often the one you feel comfortable using and that you'll want to bring with you anywhere you go...

- Lenses - any good fast midrange, like Nikkor`s 17-55 2.8? What`s the story with lenses for k5 in general, compared to Nikon camp?
[Eljaco] I answered - on the new and still produced market, Nikon will have a larger range, but they will not the well-thought "crop" lens product range, and no limited. Ltd are the real Pentax deal.
In the range you mention, DA*16-50, Sigma 18-50 & Tamron 17-50 - from I read , I believe the Nikkor might be the best (as usual by a slight margin), but also the most expensive...

- "Stain problem" - should I worry about it?
[Eljaco] No. Worst case, you'll exchange your body, Pentax will cover that.

- Should I really consider k5 as an upgrade path from d80 (I don`t mind jumping the ship and sell mine Nikon gear at all)?
[Eljaco] It'll definetely be an upgrade, just like the D90, D7000, D300 or D300s...

I'd be you - i'll stay with Nikon. But then I'm a Pentax Ltd user, and I wouldn't switch the other way ;)

You tell me: I have lived 5 years 'passage de la main d'or', just on the other side of Aligre. Been to the market for 5 years there, and this is still my favourite place in Paris... Can't afford to live there anymore (need more room with a kid).

But then the cheese store I used to go was indeed really great :)
Wish I had any pics to share... (don't even have any piece of cheese in my fridge... strict diet...)

i know we have a bad rep when welcoming tourists here... and I guess we have our share of snobs - the richer you look, the faster you might be served in certain places :s

As for not having a bad cheese store - some are definetely better than others. All good ones are expensive - cheese is expensive anyway (which is as it should, or else I'll be much fatter :)). I'll try and grab some pics, though my friend may think I'm gone crazy...

Any one here with a 70-210 19AH who has made any tests to compare it to more recent AF lenses? Ie, 19Ah Vs DA50-200 or Sigma/Tamron 70-300?

Sorry I couldn't read all the 78 pages here to check if the question was already discussed. I'm considering buying a 19AH based on several positive feedback, but I've been disappointed a bit by my previous Vivitar Series 1 A70-270 2.8-4...

Best gallery/thread idea I've seen in a while!
Except taking pictures of cheeses would be a full time job here ;)

Best: as long as it's creamy and/or stinky - munster, epoisse, reblochon, corsica cheese, gorgonzola, plain old camembert, etc..
Worst: any manufactured / industrial / plastic / supermarket "cheese"

In fact, there's too many to list in both categories... and i'm supposed to start my post Xmas diet now...

Just wondering what it would do if attached to a Ltd, such as the 35 or 70...

Good idea - in fact the Pentax Evil should be a Leica M9, but at the price of a K-r :d
With a tri-elmar 28-35-50 or 16-18-21 lens starting at f/2 (instead of f/4 for the Leica) at the price of a DA40 !

On a tripod, with "added" light, I guess "almost" any lens could do if you have the room to move around, for that kind of shots. Distortion can be corrected in PP (i.e., LR3 or DxO fix that automatically for many lenses now...).

So re-reading the original post, I guess the decisive factor is more about getting a good, standard lens for everyday usage than for 'product shots'... So decicing btw DA35 2.8 Ltd, DA 35 2.4 or DA40 2.8 is a budget question and usage question (cheap 35 Vs very small Vs macro swiss army knife...).

But limited budget + everyday lens = DA 35 F2.4, seems to me ;)
Or you may also choose to go for older, manual lenses...

If your only lens is a 18-250, it would be more sensible to get new/better lenses first, than moving to a new body... It seems to me the lens is the limiting factor in your setup...

BTW, take a look at this: Good Cameras and Lenses Versus Bad
He might be a Nikon guy ;), but I fully agree with him here...
