My first SLR was a Spotmatic II that I purchased in 1971 and the 55 f1.8 was included in the bundle. At that time, most of my photos were B&W and my favorite film was Panatomic X. It was a fine grain ASA 32 film that I used for both landscape and outdoor portrait work. I found the lens to have excellent resolution and allowed larger than usual enlargements.

I did not do any testing on the lens but on one trip I photographed the Battleship Texas using Panatomic X and took a picture of a monument about 100 yards away; there was a parking lot with head in parking by it. I looked at the film using a low power microscope and could read the license plate numbers very clearly. That is a good demonstration of the resolution of the 55mm lens.
