Neck Strap. Do you use yours?

Most of the time, but I don't use the one that came with the camera. I bought a handmade one on eBay when I had an *ist DS and I like it better because of the padding and width. It was also good when my niece and nephew were babies; it has a billiard ball pattern and the colorful balls caught their attention. I'm not a big fan of billiards but I love how quirky it is.

If you want to see the waterfalls, your visit should be before the end of May. I went to Fresno in May 2012 and visited Yosemite both weekends I was there. The second weekend I could definitely see the difference in the amount of water.

I was excited to use my 18-135 by Bridalveil since it is my only WR lens and I hadn't used it much at that time. It was kind of fun to put the weather cover over the backpack and just stroll up to the falls while watching others cover themselves and try to shelter their cameras with jackets, if they even got that far. I also used my 80-320 on people climbing El Capitan and shots of Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall from Glacier Point. However, I generally prefer taking landscapes with longer lenses so my opinion is a bit different from the others. Out of your list, I think I'd take #2.

Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger and Black Cherry Berry, with Twinings Peppermint close behind those two. My sister loves to remind me that herbal tea isn't real tea, but fruit, twigs, and roots.

I saw Life Stinks, which had one good joke, so I know Mel Brooks can make bad movies. The one good joke: they pulled off Mel Brooks' toupee and he said, "Ow! That was stitched in!" I did like Spaceballs more than the new Star Wars one.

While I did not like TFA, I'm helping my brother and his wife see it tonight by babysiting their toddlers. Easiest babysitting job ever, too, because they're going to a midnight screening so the kids will be asleep.

Star Wars

I thought it was terrible, almost as bad as the prequels, and it's only better because the actors are better than Hayden Christensen, Jake Lloyd, and Natalie Portman. It was an absolute waste of Gwendolyn Christie. I was afraid the movie would be terrible when I heard JJ Abrams was directing, and I'm sad to say I was right. I hated what he did to Star Trek and now he's done it to Star Wars. At least I didn't get my hopes up. This series gave us 2 1/2 good movies and I think that's all it can bear, especially now that the Mouse can squeeze this cash cow. Oh well, this movie is relegated to Prequel Land, in that it doesn't exist to me. The only way I'd watch it again is if the guys at Rifftrax release a riff for it.

I agree with the others -- if you have an external HD, get USB 3.0. I notice the difference.

I have a love/hate thing with my Alienware laptop. I think I have a bad sector in the RAID array which gets annoying, but otherwise I really like it. I love the lighted keyboard, I like how it feels, and this one has the 10-key. My previous laptop had lights in the keyboard too, but this one can be color customized. When I got it, they had the lights on the chassis all going and I turned most of them off. I just keep the power button (set it to change from green when plugged in to purple when on battery power) and keyboard lights on. I don't need it to look like a UFO just landed.

Spam calls.

The IRS does collect phone numbers, even if you don't have an open case. There's a field on the 1040 series of forms that ask for it. If you fill that in, they have your phone number. Here's a link from's site (the Internal Revenue Manual, specifically) talking about how to input and delete telephone numbers from their computer: manual I'm always amazed by how much stuff is on their website.

As I said before, yeah, they don't usually call, but it isn't impossible. You're correct that most of their contact is by mail. They don't shake people down like these scammers do.

I'm sure calls to the cops would be more interesting than getting calls for people in a hospital. :)

A girl I knew from school never could order pizza by phone. They usually hung up on her because her last name was Crust.

Most of the time the IRS does not call you but it isn't never. Yes, they generally send letters. If you get a scam IRS call, contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. I've had a couple of those scam calls and they have a really easy form on their website for reporting.

People used to call my dad's mechanic shop looking for a mental health hospital because their number was one off and that place advertised heavily on tv. "No, I can't connect you to room 406." Click.

DSLR vs. Flatbed Scanner?

I have a flatbed book scanner (Plustek OpticBook), because I know some of my physical books will never be available as ebooks and I just don't read paper books anymore. Once you get into it, scanning is very fast. I get tired of turning pages and flipping the books around before I get frustrated with the scan speed. The platen goes all the way to one edge and a side of the book hangs down so there's no gutter shadow. I use ABBYY Fine Reader for the OCR, a full version instead of the one that comes with the scanner. I considered building a scanning rig for my camera but buying this was easier, faster, and I'm happier with it. The Mobile Read forums have links if you want to build your own camera setup.

I already have one but there are two very special people who I would love to give this lens to -- my sister-in-law to use with the *istDS I gave her or my sister with her K1000. It would be hard to decide who, but I'd love to have that problem.

Landscape Lake Pomme de Terre at twilight

This is a picture of twilight at Pomme de Terre Lake, MO, from the Hermitage dock. This is where my family put their boats into the lake. When I was a kid with my Fisher-Price camera, I took some great pictures of the sun setting over the dam. My grandpa, who gave me his old ME Super and introduced me to Pentax, told me they would never come out. They did. So, once I bought my FA limiteds, I had to go try them out where I'd taken some of my favorite pictures. My mother thought I was nuts for driving 100 miles to the lake, in February, but I knew I could get the pictures I wanted there. The other nice thing about that time of year was only the hardcore fishing fans were out on the lake so it was quiet and I could take my time.

What I like about this picture is the orange to blue gradient and the way the light hits the waves. It also introduced me to the FA 77's pixie dust. I did minimal post processing because the K-5 and FA 77 did most of the work for me.

Thanks for looking!

Is anyone into Mustangs?

I'm not really into them, but I do have a set of Mustang photos on my Flickr account. The car is a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR. Most of these pictures were taken by my parents. My dad died in 1997 but he returned the Mustang to factory condition a few years before that and the photos are him documenting his progress. We had the front seats in the living room for about a year.

Don't tell me... the last post of the thread will prove the whole thing to be an elaborate Rickroll.

Recommendation for a smart phone...

I chose the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One because of the user replaceable battery and memory card slot. Sister-in-law has the HTC One, my brother the Note II, sister the Galaxy S2 and Mom the iPhone 5. All of us are happy with our phones, so make sure the phone has the features that are important to you.

If you're talking about the S4 screen (instead of the camera), that's a quick adjustment if you don't like the heightened color.

If you plan to visit several national parks and some other federal recreation sites, you may benefit from the America the Beautiful pass. It is good for a year and costs $80. You can order the pass from the USGS website or there are some parks where you can buy it at the door.

Paid trip to anywhere in the US- where should I go for photography?

If you decide on Yosemite, it isn't too far to drive to some other national parks such as Sequoia and Kings Canyon. If you're going to Yosemite, I like early May because the waterfalls are fullest then and it is just starting to get really busy, not crazy like later in the year. I went to Sequoia before Yosemite this year with a friend from work. After seeing the General Sherman tree, Bill was really disappointed in Yosemite's Mariposa Grove.

If you're going to go to different parks during the trip, you might consider buying an America the Beautiful pass. They're $80 for one year so see if that would be cost effective for your plans. I was surprised to use it at Red Rocks Canyon near Las Vegas this summer, because it didn't occur to me right away that it was a Bureau of Land Managment property, but then 85% of Nevada belongs to the goverment so I should have expected it.
