I bought the 50mm & 35mm some years ago on the December sale and use the 35mm way, way more than the 50mm. If you can only buy one of the two, the 35mm is the one (IMHO).

A Leap Forward... "New" K-5IIs for Christmas

All last year/early this year I was looking for a used K-5IIs, but just wasn't finding the right one, so I gave up before summer. Out of the blue today I closed a deal on a local camera in like new condition and low shutter count that was posted here for sale. Going from a K-x to this camera is a massive jump. I played around with it a bit this afternoon (but it's back in the box) and have the battery on the charger. Will wait for Dec. 25th to break it out and call it my own. I had given up on finding a nice 5IIs but happy it all worked out. Will spend 2016 getting some better glass.

I've been busy with work and haven't been out shooting for months... I'm sure that slump is over after the 25th.

Traveling to Hong Kong: Seeking Advice
Posted By OrangeKx

I'm slated to travel to Hong Kong for three weeks in December for work. I'll be working but should have some time to move around and take pictures on the weekends and evenings. We may be pretty busy, but I want to squeeze in whatever sightseeing I can. I've never been to HK so seeking some advice for taking/using my camera and gear.

I wish I knew exactly where I will be in HK, but things are still brewing and I haven't been in the loop but for getting my expired passport fixed up.
  • Thinking I want to keep it simple, Kx, 50mm, 35mm and kit lens. That's what I took to Vegas and it worked out well.

  • I don't want to mess with a tripod (have a "The Green Pod" beanbag "tripod" I can take)

  • Anything I should look out for beyond the usual "camera-in-a-big-city-with-lots-of-people" thing?

  • Since I'm limited on tourist time, are there some "don't miss" areas I should be sure and hit while I'm there?

Thanks in advance.

Went to Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon today. While talking to a comic book author about his work a woman in his booth asked me about my Pentax K-x. She said she was a long time Pentax user (still has the K1000 her grandfather gave her to use when she was getting into photography). She then broke out her new K-3 II and told me how she had trouble finding it locally. She called a place and they told her there was no such Pentax. We had a nice conversation about Pentax, then I told the guy I would buy his comic partially because of the Pentax connection. He signed the comic and I was off. Fun time.

On Saturday (Aug. 22nd) my wife and I were hiking a 1.2 mile trail in the California Redwoods and started up a conversation with another couple (locals) who hiked the trails on the weekends. I was toting my K-x and ME Super and at the time had them both out as I had been taking some film shots. The lady held up her camera and pointed out we were both Pentax users. I didn't notice she had an XG-1 till she pointed it out.

My dad bought one a few weeks ago. Was using it this past weekend and find it's a pretty nice camera. I should pitch my K-x and pick up a K-50.

Local jewelry store had Pulsars on sale for 60% off (getting rid of older models). I bought this for $60. Looks really nice in real life. It's a good "wear to work" watch since the price was right. I'm really digging the dive watch look.

Using what I have...

Man does this sum up my feelings about my gear. I was all fired up for the K-5IIs deal at the end of 2014, had the money to pay for it and was one mouse click away from getting the screaming deal with the battery grip and all and suddenly decided I didn't want a new camera for Christmas. I have a camera body with a low shutter count, I'm happy with my lens arsenal (even though it's not perfect), I have every bag combo I need, backpacks, etc. and I have all the little accessory items needed to make life easy. Despite needing a better (lighter) tripod, I just didn't feel like buying any more gear. Haven't spent a dime on camera gear for 6 months.

In addition to not feeling the need for a newer DSLR, I'm having a ball with my old film cameras (ME-Super & ZX-M) which live in the same backpack with their own manual lenses and accessories so I don't have to swap stuff around from my DSLR rig. It's like I have the perfect balance of bag organization and gear.

About the only camera that stirs the loins is a Ricoh GR, but not feeling the urge right now to buy one of those either.

It's good to know I'm not alone on this.

I really like my ZX-M, if it died I don't think I'd replace it, but I would miss it.
