Pentax K-1 "Thank you" Thread

Thank you Pentax.
From the EI-c90, EI-100, EI-200 and EI2000.
You knew what was coming from the dawn of the digital age.
You knew what it would take, and like a candle in the wind, you tried to partner with other companies to share the risk, and achievement, but everyone let you down.
HP, Hoya, Samsung, Philips to name a few.
You somehow worked past the humiliation and debacle of the MZ-D.
You made your digital FF mirror-box on the *ist-D thinking someone would provide you with what you needed.
It never came.
You hunkered down, and put on your grown up pants.
You got sold, and tossed around.
You cobbled together what was on the shelf, and tried to remake yourself many many times.
You tried EVERYTHING from colors to blinking lights.
Big and small.
But we were still here.
We didn't leave.
The hardcore Pentaxians who would not let the FF dream die.
We took the slings from the mirrorless crowd.
From the Canikony crowd.
From every corner of the web.
We stood by.
We bought what you made for us, even during your fire sales and your orphans.
Thank you for finally finding your compass.
Your direction.
Your realization that sometimes, the most loyal fans, tend to be right.

Welcome back Pentax, thank you, and thank us - as some of us, have been with you the whole time.

Today I went to my local camera store to get a new gimbal head. The Tamron rep was there at the time and between him and the store owner I have these rumors.

#1. Ricoh is going to open a factory service center in the US in 2016.

#2. The new full frame Pentax will have the Sony 42 MP sensor from the a7R II.

#3. Tamron will be adding new Pentax K mount lenses because of the above.

Dear Pentax,

If you have the time, or resources, to spare,

I hope you make a video-oriented K-01 successor... and if you have more cash from Ricoh, probably revive some glass from the Super Takumar line as cine lenses please? :D

Pentax Gear to go on sale in India soon

Vow, great tidings indeed for a country where old timers and studio folks still venerate Pentax Film cameras. And I say this from smaller towns like Patna in Bihar, where film photography was a passion.
I buy all my Pentax gear abroad and have never worried about Service. Even when I owned an MZ-5n I got it repaired by an independent stores in the Fort area Mumbai. The good thing about India is that nothing is thrown away, as we have very good local mechanics and repair men, who can put back sick equipment with cannibalized or improvised parts.
I have repeatedly informed my friends in the US to send their Lens problems - recoating, separation, fungus cleaning etc - to India for repairs at 1/2 to 1/4 of the US cost including shipping.
Ricoh must be prepared to make a dent into the well trenched Canikon market here in India. And I wish them good luck as an earlier Pentax + Ricoh Film camera user.
But firstly Ricoh will have to change the mindset of Professional Photographers in India, by giving them their best loaner cameras and lenses. Reason Why? These guys have been spreading the word to erstwhile Pentaxian families that DSLRs are only Canikons and nothing else.
Wish you well Ricoh. Also wish you had retained the word Pentax in some form on your letter head & web site.

Tamron's rings are also gold.. like in their 17-50 f/2.8 (the 70-200 f2.8 has a blue one, though)

the metallic red looks good anyway. Canon's got the deep red (but plain) one. Though yeah, how about pearl white?

A very impressive set of improvements in this new K3 model. I for one am particularly pleased that the button placement (esp. the green button) has been changed. Moving from a K20 to the K5 I have not in 2 years been able to consistently choose the AF or Green buttons correctly on the fly. Now these 2 buttons are well separated with placements more consistent with how they will be used (ie green button right below aperture dial) and AF nicely off to the side where it can'i be confused with another but can be easily accessed nonetheless. And sticking with the same battery as the K5 also a bonus.

IMHO the Green button is the most significant differentiating feature from all the other brands - ever watch someone with a Canon try and shoot in manual mode?

Bravo Pentax/Ricoh for delivering a premium product!

+1 After all the comments over the last year or so that going to higher MP in APS-C would inevitably reduce IQ. Having the same IQ as the k-5IIs but with 24MP is amazing to me. Expected, but amazing.

Let's not forget that Pentax regularly gets better performance and IQ out of a given sensor than other manufacturers. Sony, especially. Let's hope that continues.

Dear Pentax,

can you please allow users to revert to an older firmware?

The camera could ask for confirmation if the firmware on the card is older than the one installed, but it should proceed with the firmware replacement, if the user confirms that they want to install the older firmware.

It is really, really great that you keep offering new firmware upgrades, but sometimes a user may decide -- after trying an upgrade -- that the old version was better for them after all. Why not enable the "undo" option?

Make mine with retro-look/feel in the form of a Pentax MX, let's call it: MX-D.

With APS-C, OVF, PASM, ISO, EV, 1/6000 to Bulb and no other fluffy in-body software. Just a no non-sense camera. I live for the day.

Folks , Pentax already has a Pro Service to support the 645D ( with the caveat that the photographer makes 50% of his annual income from Photography). This service may/might be expanded to handle FF DSLR's . Also lack of FF Glass can be mitigated by TAMRON/SIGMA creating glass for Pentax under Contract ( even a rebranding agreement with a 70/30 or 60/40 profit split may be profitable to all concerned). Its still to early to say what may be coming if anything, so lets be patient and hope. It serves no purpose to speculate in the absence of hard facts and wishing won't make it so. As many of us are long standing Pentaxians , I say we be patient and see what comes down the pike in the next year.

Dear Pentax,

Hope you are working on a mirrorless rangefinder style APS-C camera with a hybrid (electro-optical) viewfinder ala X100S... Would like one with a 21mm f2 lens, thx.

Cheers,

I think it is more important to come with a pro body first,
Since SIGMA offer wonderful 35/50/85 mm lenses, TAMRON offer pretty good 28-75mm and 70-200 mm and of course there is 31/43/77 from Pentax, I believe that is enough for a start.

I think that there is gap between $750 and $1300, and is barely addressed. A camera that sits at comfortable $900 is needed, and yes, it may have a 20MP sensor. I really hope Ricoh will expand the K-mount offer (I hope they want more lenses sold?), because two basically same bodies priced low, and just one priced high, aren't anything new — in fact, it's the continuation of the old Pentax paradigm.

And I expect Ricoh to add some new thinking to the game, even if it takes a slightly different form factor to spice up the K-mount offer. People need a reason to buy into better lenses, and K-3 cannot be a sole reason.

Quality problems seem to me unavoidable in a consumer area where new models and technologies are created every 18 months. I remember long-time advice from Consumer Reports to never buy a new car within the first 2 model years of its introduction. The thought being that by the 3rd model year, the problems and issues would be ironed out. But in the camera world, by the 3rd model year, new models are generally created. Why? Few problems have been reported with the K5 II's and i think its due to this camera model being a slightly modified K5, for which the problems were ironed out during the first model year. I bought my K5 late in its model year and still have experienced zero problems with it - a wonderful camera.

I've never been a "first responder" or had my name on the "pre-order list" of any camera model and will leave the new models to the risk takers among us:) I want the drama in my pictures, not on a photography forum.

I'm sure that would make everyone happy - but you do understand that is precisely the old Pentax, Right?

Get nothing right for years - nothing! - than toss up a glorious Hail Mary Pass product that will SAVE THE COMPANY, that really is sublime, something sweet and new, something for all the reviewers to write about. PENTAX IS BACK!! Then fail to execute. A living corporate example of Fear of Success.

If Ricoh really is different it will be different. Very Very good new product, iteratively and constantly improved, constant small marketing, something new every month, in the news every week, solid, dependable, no surprises, no disappointments, good service, good warranties, for now a little more consumer-oriented than we would like, for now no pretense about semi-professional stuff in K-mount (see 645).

In short, an alternative to CaNikon, not another CaNikon.
