Could you please do a quick sentance on comparison between the FA*85, DA*55, FA77Ltd and DA70? I am familiar with the K85. :)

I forgot about the FA*85, size wise its looks in the middle between the DA*55 and Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM.

I did very much enjoy the FA*24 I had before, actually going to search for another.

Yes, the new DA*85 is even bigger than the Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM, that was was too big!

I forgot the D-FA100, I had one of those for a while, the focus hunting (no limiter) was annoying. Lovely and small though!

I'm looking for portrait lens.

I currently use Three Lenses: D-FA 28-105, FA43 & DA*300, and I still have a K55 f1.8 about.

My experience of fast Standard/Portrait lenses:

Pentax FA 43mm f1.9 - Great, I love it but want something longer and smoother OOF areas.

Pentax FA 50mm f1.7 - Not really especially fast or great rendering, did not own for that long to be honest.

Pentax K 55mm f1.8 - Really liked this on my K-3 and MZ-S, nice and smooth OOF and build but Stop-Down-Metering was a PITA

Pentax K 85mm f1.8 - Lovely, like the K55 much the same experience. Amazing build and size.

Pentax FA 135mm f2.8 - Bit too long for general use (on K-3 and MZ-S), lovely build and size.

Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM - Best I have had but too big/heavy, did not take it anywhere. Superb Bokeh/OOF areas.

Voigtlander SLII 58mm f1.4 - Lovely, little soft wide open but thats picking at it, superb but not AF. Probably best all-round lens I've had for portraits (mix of size, speed and sharpness)

Voigtlander 90mm APO f3.5 - Amazing OOF areas, super sharp and close focus, but not AF.

The Sigma 85mm HSM and Voigtlanders were all superb but the former too big and the latter without AF.

Ideally what I would like is an AF version of the VL58, obviously not going to happen.

So it seems a straight toss up between the DA*55mm and FA-77, the new D-FA* 50mm is going to be too large (and D-FA*85mm).

The FA77 is obviously the obvious choice but looking at photos in the sample threads, like the DA*55 they both have a similar issue where the OOF areas can still be a bit busy, is that just the nature of a shorter focal length and lack of compression in the background?

Thanks for the samples, some lovely photos. As I plan to, it looks like a lovely companion to the FA43. :)

Thats a superb shot, love it! Its quite often that I find the 28mm on the D-FA28-105 is not quite wide enough and I'm not the biggest fan of UWA. I had a DA14 on the K-01 and found the perspective distortion a bit too much that wide. Same with the DA10-17 personally.

A few years ago, I had a decent copy of the FA* 24mm f2 AL with a K-3II, and very much liked the combination although I found the croped angle of view (~35mm) did not suit me that well.

I really liked the build, speed, sunstars/lack of flare and just general look of the photos. Yes you have to stop down to ~f11 for corner to corner sharpness but I would anyway for landscape. My old copy was very sharp from wide open which I never had an issue with.

Some of the K-3II/FA*24 below

Now I have a K-1, I have searched but did not find too many samples of photos with this combination. I have a D-FA28-105 and FA43 which get the most use on it, but looking for a wide-angle.
I have looked at the FA20, Voigtlander 20mm f3.5, FA20-35 f4 etc but I think the FA*24 should be ideal.

What are peoples real-world experience with the FA*24 on the full-frame K-1?

Cheers, Rob

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM (Sale/Trade)

Asking Price
600.00 GBP

Item Location
Oxfordshire (UK)

Item Description
Due to low use, looking to sell my Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM in Pentax fit.

Its a great portrait lens, but does not really get much use anymore as I tend to use my FA43 and FA100 Macro.

Its in great condition, and comes with the original case, original front and back caps as well as the 2-part hood (although the petal hood part is cracked and repaired) and the original box.

Bought from SRS (used) back in late 2015 and used with great effect on the K-3II and K-1:

Not sure on price, looking for 600 inc UK Delivery.

Would possibly be interested in a DA*55 or Voigtlander 58mm/90mm APO as a swap.

I don't see any reason for a new D-FA Limited to keep the Aperture Ring/Screwdrive. Pentax needs to move on and keep up to date with the market, yes I love that I can use my FA43 with my MZ-S, which is lovely but its not going to keep them in business.

I think a ~20mm f4 and ~135mm f2.8 would round off an excellent collection with the FA31, FA43 and FA77.

Give them internal motor and WR and be done with it, at the expense of ultimate speed.

I had this with my Sigma DP1X (28mm/APS-C compact) and its the main thing that has put me off the GR so far. Also, I've got used to walking around in the rain/snow with the K-3II and K-1!

I only had the FA24 on a K-3II but my impressions were:

Plus
Sharp in the centre wide open (well mine was)
Good size/weight/speed combination
Excellent flare resistance
Sunstars
Good contrast, even into bright light/wide open

Cons
Bokeh is OK, smoother than the FA43.
Finish scratches very easily
Corners, even on APS-C did not catch up till f5.6 at least. For landscape, f8 or better.
C/A although as mentioned Lightroom can fix easily

I'd love to have another on my K-1.

I liked the FA43 on the K-3II, I loved it with the MZ-S (Perfect combo BTW) and I love it with the K-1....

Its just the best walk around lens, if it had WR then it would be perfect!
