Looking for suggestions for photo and video storage and sharing.

+1 for a NAS, but you'll need to think the storage strategy through fully.

I use a two disk Synology NAS, in RAID 1 configuration, which means each disk is an exact 'mirror' of the other. Attached to the NAS is a usb external hard disk which is used to back-up the most critical files from the NAS.

On one of my PC's is a file containing all my photos, which is copied on a regular basis to the NAS, plus another usb external hard disk attached to the PC.

So, counting the two disks in the NAS, it's back-up, the PC and it's backup, I have five copies of my photographs.

The risk, however, is that they are all in my house, so a fire would see them all destroyed.

I'm just in the process of looking for external storage, be it physical or virtual (cloud), that I can back up to too.

I might go down the route of installing another NAS at a family members house, as the NAS units can be accessed remotely.

Over the top? Yes, but it's a life time of memories.

Type of oil for lubricating mirror gears?

Sure the mirror isn't stuck in the up position because it's sticking to the foam that absorbs the mirror impact? The foam gets sticky over time as it degrades. Which isn't to say that your lubrication suggestion is wrong of course.

It's the usual advice - reset to factory defaults, but...since permanent sensor shaking isn't normal it could, unfortunately, be an expensive fault.

Good luck.

It has a 58mm filter thread. Use a step-up ring to get beyond the 'hood'.

DPReview High ISO Noise D850 vs K-1

Personally I couldn't care less whether one camera is better than the other, but am bothered about how the for/against arguments are made, so in this instance surely the size of the files indicates this is not an apples vs. apples comparison? The K1 files appear to be half the size of those from the D850.

I too subscribe to the non-usage theory.

I diary an exercise session for my SDM lenses to take place every two weeks, also to test fire my various flash guns, whether I've used them or not since the previous exercise session.

So far, so good.

Look at the K-S1. Great IQ, small and light, viewfinder....and disco lights!😁

Keep an open mind. I bought one to pair with my DA Ltd's as a light weight, high IQ, walk around option. Perfect for me.

This one is as cheap as chips, but clearly not as easy to mount, etc, as the Tarion you linked to. Could be worth buying just to see how you get on with the concept before spending more?

Question on K-r start srcreen

The camera has a small internal battery intended to retain settings like time and date when the main battery is removed. It would seem it's either dead through age, in which case it will not be worth changing it (if indeed it's possible) as it'll have be be done by a service company, and the cost is likely to be more than the camera's worth, or its lost its charge because the main battery has been left out too long.

An AF Fine Adjustment setting question
Posted By JohnX
Replies: 10

The camera comes out of the factory set so focussing etc is within the manufacturing tolerances. The same happens with the lenses. When you combine a body with a lens you have two sets of tolerances that might not play nicely together straight off, so you use AF Fine Tuning to adjust the camera focussing to work with the lens. You need to do this for every lens.

When it comes to zoom lens, you can either fine tune for your preferred focal length, or average the adjustment between the long and short ends of the zoom.

Battery wrongly stuck in Pentax K-50

I've seen solutions to this, which included;

super glueing something like a plastic zip tie to the exposed end of the battery and using it to pull the battery up and out;

making L shaped (metal?) handles, sliding them down the side of the battery on both sides, hooking the L under the bottom of the battery and pulling upwards;

and, not to be recommended but...screwing a screw into the exposed end of the battery and using it to pull up and out. This latter suggestion was actually done by a camera repair centre, but presumably they knew how/where to avoid the cells in the battery case and therefore not risk short circuit/fire/end of the world!

One idea which was never reported as successful was simply making sure the battery latch is not holding the battery in, then hit the camera hammer fashion against your other hand with the battery compartment facing down, with the hope that it would would shock the battery lose.

gimbal heads - cost, value and usage

I know it's not the purpose of the thread as such, but don't you have to start with why use a gimbal?

I don't, but think they're best suited to situations when you need to follow the action quickly but don't want to/can't hand hold the lens/camera for any length of time, i.e. wildlife.

If you're shooting landscape, the subject doesn't move, so an ordinary head - ball or otherwise - would surely do provided the lens/camera is well balance via the lens foot?

Buying a lens from Ritz Camera?

Haven't had to invoke it, but I understand the Pentax warranty is international.

There might be some fine print regarding proof of purchase from an authorized dealer, although more likely any proof of purchase would be to prove the purchase date against the warranty length.
