Sony Kills the a33 at infancy!

But Sony manufactures the parts for Nikon and Pentax (and some other cameras I suppose) right?

So as long companies create demand for cameras through whatever means, Sony just makes sure it produces enough supply to fill the demand that their other customers (Nikon/Pentax) can't fill, hence the randomly designed cameras.

Perhaps a "make the pie bigger" rather than a "get more slices from the same small pie" strategy.

I have 4 internet lines at work serving 250 users. I have all the "industrial" type of switches, routers, etc. My "PC" at work is a "stack" of 3 computers.

At home, I don't have my own PC lol. I just use my wife's 11" Asus eeePc. She's also got a Blackberry and she's really wanting to get an iPad. That's 3 devices already for just a wife. I can imagine when there are kids already lol.

K-x, long movies and sensor damage.

if the mechanical shutter dies, then we have a full-time video camera? lol

I use the k-x for lots of video also. So far, it just shortens the lifespan of my Enerloops, especially when I frequently use the quick charger.

quick-drain + quick-charge is not very nice for rechargables.

It also fills up my hard disk.

k-x and hotshoe sync: won't trigger when set to 1/2 EV steps

definitely NOT faster than 1/180. I was actually wanting to use 1/180 that's why I set it to 1/2 EV. It just won't trigger when set to 1/2 at ANY speed.

Anyway with 1/3 EV, the flash actually fires even at 1/250! Although there would be a "rolling shutter" effect, where there's a thick clack gradient from one side of the photo. I usually use 1/160 and lower.

I just figured this out with my K-x.

When I set the camera to use 1/2 EV steps, the PocketWizard wireless trigger nor my Chinese no name radio trigger won't fire. It also won't fire other brand flashes (I tried an EX480II and an SB28).

When I set it to use 1/3 EV steps, everything is OK.

Not really a problem but, Is this normal?

4-day trip to Germany

Rent a car and drive around seems like a nice idea, although I would not like to be apprehended by cops in any way lol. Also, would I need some kind of "international driver's license?"

How about....bike? Would that be feasible?

The wife's travelling for business. I'm coming. While she's working, I don't know what I will do or where I will go. I have never been to Germany.

The hotel will be in Bad Oeynhausen. What's the best way to go around the place (and perhaps where)? Will be I all right even if I don't speak German?

External Audio recorders- Zoom H4n?

I own the H4n, it's very nice sounding. I am a musician and I use it to record live performances and rehearsals. Especially for rehearsals, where I can go 4-channel and plug a line from the mixer to separately record the singer's voice (usually drowned by the band in real life) so I can bump it up in post.

I must say it's quite bulky and is very awkward on top of our DSLR's though. The H1 may be more "hotshoe friendly."

Can we buy a new, genuine Pentax K-x L90 focusing screen?

After trying a whole bunch of focusing screens with split screens, i've come to a conclusion that I actually like the stock k-x screen better.

The green hexagon focus confirm + beep is actually just as accurate as a split screen.

Now with all my experimentation and split screen swapping, my k-x stock focusing screen is now full of scratches that I can never remove and will annoy me perpetually.

I only see 3 screens available for sale:

Pentax L80
KatzEye
focusingscreen.com

Is a brand new Genuine Pentax L90 screen for sale anywhere?

18-55mm kit lens. Nothing exciting.

Try to get the kit lens in proper focus, you'll realize how much detail it can produce at any focal length and aperture.

I will not argue about its contrast being inferior to other lenses, but contrast adjustment is the most elementary post-processing task that everybody does, along with cropping and brightness adjustment.

What sucks about the kit lens is it only opens up to f5.6 at around 50mm.

what? of course you need them all.

the 1.4 has got 8 aperture blades (am i correct?) so it should give an octagon bokeh, while the 2 and 1.7 will give hexagons when stopped down

Get the latest generation device, you won't regret it :) It will satisfy your soul.

However if you're the practical type and can live with justifying the purchase all the time, get the "better bang for the buck!"

no doubt, dslr's can beat film, even medium format, when it comes to pixel-peeping.

Right?

Nikon AF 105/2 DC
Canon EF 100/2 USM

Both are very nice lenses, and we only have 100/2.8 right now.

45W ESL won't be enough, especially when filtered through a shoot-through umbrella.

Consider generic chinese strobes instead. They will save you more electricity, and they're not expensive at all. 180W strobes will be plenty powerful even through umbrellas. Consider flash guns also, but it's a drag charging batteries.

Trigger them strobes with generic radio triggers also. They are very inexpensive also.

wow it's written in .NET.

It would be wonderful if he can make a DLL available to reference toolbox controls to (no need to make it open source), so we can make our own GUI in Visual Studio :)

the 28/1.8 is winning by a landslide.

Won't a DA*/WR 28/1.8 force the FA31 ltd into retirement?

Nikon FA/FE2 Type B2
- With stock shim
- Back-focuses

Nikon F3 Type B
- Shim must be removed
- You have to remove it from the brackets.
- A glass correction element is taped with the screen, has to be removed also of course
- Slight back-focus

Nikon FM3a Type K3
- My next project :)
- Hopefully, this does not back-focus

guys i finally did it! I used a dremel! hehe. It was impossible for me to cut with a cutter, how the heck did you do it with a cutter?

The 1st 1, i ruined it. It was the Nikon FA/FE2, I was excited and very inaccurate. Anyway it back-focused. It was about as thin as the stock one, only a little bit thicker imo. Needed the shim.

The 2nd 1 was much better. It was the Nikon F3. NOT perfect at all because the prisim/split is NOT centered properly :(. It's a bit top-right position. This one doesnt need the shim, and with an autofocus lens, focuses correctly

I will plan for the 3rd one more properly.

Things I have learned:
- Use the SLOW rpm setting if you're using a dremel.
- Be careful with the focusing screen bracket. Mine got dislodged and it was a pain putting it back!
- Use tweezers that have a "soft" edge.
- Try to be as precise as possible with the measurements. It's bloody annoying for the prism circle not to be at the center of the viewfinder!

The blackout at f8 is also annoying. Perhaps I'll try to find a screen that doesnt have a split screen, BUT can see wider than F2.8

I have no choice but to make a new one and to make it as perfect as possible, because my stock focusing screen is now full of scratches due to getting taken out and in all the time!

LOL thanks. Perhaps I'll use a cardboard cutter. I picture the dremel will not only cut, but melt the whole thing hehe.

I have picked up my specimens from the old house already:

1. Nikon F3 Type B
2. Nikon FA/FE2 Type B2

Stuff that i'll be getting from the bookstore:

- Standard cutter (how about exacto knife?)
- Masking tape
- Mechanical pencil

Can't wait to get off from work!

I have a Dremel, but i'm not sure if I can cut the screen with precision using it. I currently have the brown/maroon carbide cutting discs, but I don't have very steady hands...

Did you use a standard cutter, with replaceable blades? As in the one we use for school projects to cut cardboards?

So basically this is what I should do:
1. Take out the stock focusing screen, trace its outline on the Nikon K3 focusing screen using a pen
2. Cut the Nikon K3 using whatever means necessary
3. Take out the K-x focusing screen shim
4. Insert the cut K3 screen. I should lock in place.

M42 S-M-C Takumar 50/1.4: Fungus Favorite?

I have a bunch of lenses, old and new, stored in a box full of charcoal and silica gel desiccant bags.

Among all of them, the M42 S-M-C 50/1.4 seem to attract fungus the most. I have two of these, the one with the rubber grip and the older, all-metal one. I left it for the weekend without my lens cleaning routine and the rubber grip one got attacked by fungus on the inside, the other one just on the surface elements! The other lenses seem to be ok.

Are you also experiencing more fungus attraction on some lenses more than others?

I have an M42 version of this lens and even it wont fit well in my k-x + m42 adapter.

Anyway, I grinded that metal part with my Dremel.

The lens is also pretty soft and mine has a lot of oil in the aperture blades and won't stop down past f4.
