Thematic Post your Church images

Often elements of church architecture say something about the beliefs and spiritual philosophies of the denomination or sect which worships there, and during the week, not just on the Sabbath, the building is meant to communicate some of those messages. I have thought for a long time, that in rural areas the tallest spires, together, say a great deal about the traditional aspirations of a community--whether they be church steeples, courthouse cupolas, the crowns of municipal water towers, or the tops of grain elevators. Each has its own, congregation, sometimes overlapping with that of some of the other spires.

Ya know, Dave, when I made up that signature design, we didn't know if we'd ever see you back here, and there are some other signature images paying tribute to other members, so I didn't invent the idea. And just looking for a pony standing in such a way as to look like an "m" which I could adapt to make the design, reminded me even more of how astounding the catalog of Dartmoor pony pictures you've posted here is--further exemplified by the one you just posted. And of course you've posted many other great pictures, too.

Whether we now hear from you regularly again, or only from time to time, I will continue to consider you a fellow PF member worthy of high regard and honors, and my invitation to others still stands. If that makes you blush, maybe that is good for your circulation. In these unhealthful times, we all need all the help we can get in that area, no? :)

REMINDER FOR EVERYONE READING THIS: If you wish to proclaim yourself as one of the long-time fans of Dave's contributions to this forum, feel free to copy the image at the bottom of my posts and make it your signature image, too. No charge.

I realize several of you may already have message signature material you like, which is fine, some of which may already be in tribute to another member, past or present, but, if you don't have a signature image or have thought of changing to something new, consider this an opportunity.

You could try it with the scans you have. Might give you some idea whether it would be worth paying for those HD scans the next time.

I think I would try converting some of those cross-processed expired film shots to black-and-white to see what they would look like then. I wonder if some of them would look like early Tri-X pushed to a pronounced graininess?

I find the angle between the railing and the direction the steeple is pointing toward significant in the picture, not the details of the railing so much. But that angle seems quite important to me in the geometry of the overall image.

I didn't know that thread existed! Thanks for letting me know about it. I do take a few of those, but not as creative ones as some in that thread! I will probably submit to that thread from time to time. Maybe beginning with something older in my files, especially if I can find something a bit surprising.

All of these taken on the same afternoon, which was becoming progressively overcast, and breezy. All taken at f/8, 24mm, DA 18-135 WR, K10D, isos progressively raised with darkening conditions.

Locations: Smithfield and Bernadotte, Illinois; Anderson Lake, along the Illinois River.

Old Red Brick School, Smithfield, Illinois.

The Spoon River at Bernadotte, Illinois. The missing span of the old iron bridge, partially removed by floodwaters a few years ago, is sitting on blocks in the town. The intention is to reattach it and restore the bridge for foot traffic again.

Anderson Lake, a floodplain lake of the Illinois River, between Havana and Beardstown, Illinois. Most of the surface is frozen when this shot was taken.

All three of these: DA 18-135 WR, K10D, 24mm, f/8. ISOs increased from shot to shot, as it got progressively more overcast and darker that afternoon.

You have to hunt for the reflections in these two, but they are there!

First shot, the Spoon River at Bernadotte; the second, the shoreline of Anderson Lake, near the Illinois River; both at 24mm/f8 with the DA 18-135 WR on my K10D. It was even more overcast, and somewhat breezy for the second shot.
