Adobe Camera RAW 8.3 include Pentax K-3 support

Because I am choosing NOT to go the CC route, after much reading that Adobe will continue support for the licensed version of Lightroom, ACR updates will move forward. While I still have CS6, everything is just fine. Once CS6 is out of support, then the only difference will be you will develop your images in LR, and when you open them in PSCS6 or below, they will come in as TIFF. It's a decent compromise, and I am actually enjoying the added benefit of cataloging my images. Your sidecar files however will remain with you original raw versions.

If you are privileged to own one of these gems of a camera, your journey is not complete without a copy of Herbert Keppler's "The Honeywell Pentax Way". I have the 5th edition, but anything between '72 and '74 would be a great find.

Get in touch with Eric Hendrickson @ The older SPII's generally need to be reconditioned prior to any useful afterlife. He's actually cleaned a 500mm zoom for me with excellent results. For batteries, try this link: Camera Batteries - a complete chart -'s Classic Camera DB

Windows SyncToy. Set up as many profiles (source/destination) as you desire. Then call them from a nightly (or more frequent) scheduled task.

This is not entirely correct. You can install Oracle VirtualBox ( ) on your Windows 7 machine, then install a Linux distro, OpenSuSe for example, and lastly install Darktable. If you have a fairly robust PC, it should work just fine. Here is a decent summary on How To Set It Up.

Topaz Denoise is a very capable tool, however depending on the resolution of your original image, you might want to research Image Averaging. Here is a starting point: (Noise Reduction By Image Averaging)

Picked this up in the Market here. Needed a -4 AF adjustment, but overall it performs quite well on the K-5.
F5 | ISO 1000 | 1/25 No PP for noise (there wasn't any).

pentax K5, lenses for traveling

Since the criteria is 2 lenses, I pack the DA40 and the DA18-250 for my ventures to Italy. The 40 is a discrete "street" lens, with exceptional skills. The 18-250 is just a gem for travel.

I'll mirror what others have said. I have a dedicated SD/SDHC/SDXC reader in my WinPC. Drag and Drop into appropriate folder, then sort/rate with Bridge. I'm not a fan of connecting the camera directly due to potential static discharge or voltage returning to the camera. I also format/delete images in camera, not via explorer.

Tool kit to dismantle old manual lenses

I'm not sure if my math is correct, but $40 in US is about 2,000 rupees. Not sure what 2,000 rupees can buy you these days, but I had a Vivitar Series 1 100-500 zoom cleaned about 2 years ago for $120US. While the company I sent it to did a really amazing job, the outcome left a lot to be desired. Fungus comes in many forms and in my humble opinion, I'd keep my money and save up for something newer. Sometimes fungus etches the glass which is what happened in my case.

It's so refreshing to get away from all the 'gloom and doom' postings about the K5. I'm with you. The K5 takes me back to my Spotmatic II days. Everything about the camera is spectacular. I now have two kits packed, one with auto lenses, and one with my vast array of SMC Takumar M's. Which bag do you think I am using most now? ;)

I've been down your path. If you have educational access to Adobe Products, I cannot recommend CS5(.5) high enough. Sure, it isn't a dedicated HDR tool, but you've got that basically built into the camera. Where PS CS5 shines is the thousands of other bits you probably think you don't need. You'll be wrong. I use practically every tool they have, if just for experimenting. There is just so very much you can to in PP with it that it is worth every penny.

I've got a pair of HP ZR22w monitors. When calibrated, they are pretty amazing for the price. Probably the best monitors I've owned that didn't cost the farm.

Glazers Camera in downtown has some Pentax gear. Pricing is pretty much "retail". If you have specific lenses in mind, best to call first. Used Pentax is also available there, and you can also check out the used departments at Kenmore Camera (North Seattle) and Jim's Camera (University District). You can try Talls Camera, they have locations dotted throughout the greater Seattle area. They aren't really a "Pentax" shop, but do have some lenses. Finally you've got the Ritz Camera chain. Probably more luck with the web site, but again, calling will give you greater details. Let the web do your walking.

I have actually had pretty good luck with the free Windows Live Movie Maker. It gives you all the control you need plus some pretty cool effects including music. You can save for web or DVD.

Perhaps you can try taking a long exposure, in a dark place, with the lens cap on, SR off, on tripod to eliminate any possibility of shake/motion and see if any bright spots result. That will most likely eliminate any electronic failure. Secondly, what image processing software are you using? Can you reproduce this effect using a different image processor on the same affected image?

The OP stated the dust is inside the rear screen. I can't imagine how a Rocket Blower or Dust Removal on Startup will take care of this problem. I would suggest to the OP that he/she try to take a macro in good light of the issue with another camera, and send it off to a Pentax service center for review. I am also of the opinion that dust should not be entering the rear LCD.

PC Advice

Hi Bruce,
I've been running Win7 on a fairly robust, but affordable tower machine. Anything with x64 capability, quad or dual quad core (i7) with at least 8gig of memory should be sufficient to run the most demanding tasks in Photoshop CS5. My machine has a 128gig SSD that is my boot drive and which runs CS5. Drive space is a raid of 3 terabytes (1.5 redundant). It is blindingly fast. But the real treat is dual (identical) monitors, calibrated identically using Spyder Pro, and in the 1920x1080 res minimum range. matching monitors of the best quality you can afford are important. There are some really affordable monitors these days and unless you're into professional processing, are truly incredible. I utilize UltraMon which makes dual monitor usage a breeze. Backups are easily accomplished with some external IDE drives and believe it or not, Microsoft SyncToy.
