Hi From San Antonio Texas - and 645Z question

Welcome o the forum. My experience has been that Slow Shutter Speed NR is applied to RAW or JPG, and when ON, the camera takes the image and then takes another with the shutter closed, to determine which pixels are stuck on, or hot, and then removes them from the original image. This would be useful, for example, when shooting star trails on a warm evening, when the sensor could get heated from long exposures. If you're taking 30 sec. shots with Slow Shutter Speed NR ON, it will take a second 30 sec. shot to remove the hot pixels from the image. In practice it seems that the camera takes forever to get a shot. That's why I try to do star trail photos only on cool evenings with Slow Shutter Speed NR Off.

I hesitated on this one, but finally jumped. And I'm glad I did. It arrived today, and looks new, right down to the included packaging and documentation. It's smaller than I recall, but it's no Limited by any means. The web page indicates at least one more for another lucky soul. It took me 5 days to place the order, since their web site rejected my order once my credit card company balked at the order. Hopefully the next person has better luck. Get it while you can.

I think I'm going to enjoy this on my 645Z. :)

645Z - Catch-in-focus?

Thanks for the bump on this. I haven't found a solution to this. It's probably just as well. Since I originally posted this back in 2014, I've retired from my 'day job' and have been shooting hummingbirds in my garden on pretty much a daily basis. I picked up a K-50 to do that job in 2015, it now has a shutter count of over 333,000. If the Z had catch-in-focus capabilities, I'm sure mine would have a significantly higher shutter count than the 14,200 it currently has. Not that I don't think the Z could handle that type of use (abuse?). ;)

question on diagnostics for 645z

The closest thing to what you suggest for diagnostics on ANY Pentax camera is a knowledgeable view of the EXIF data from an image. That will give you the shutter count among other variables pertaining to the camera at the time the image was shot. If you can interpret all the data, it MAY tell you if "everything is functioning normally".
I can tell you from experience, that the 645Z is a reliable camera if it hasn't been abused, and that my K-50, with a shutter count of over 322,000 in less than 3 years, is still shooting daily.
If the gear is in good shape, and used with care, it should last you a long time. My 15 year old *istD still works! Good luck on making your decision.

Pentax-A 645 120 macro f4... I need bokeh samples

Nothing to be scared of here. The lens can be had for less than $200 on ebay. Grab one and learn to use it to your liking. If not, sell it. BTW, what is a 'nitid' lens? (Please forgive my ignorance. :))

These were taken with a 645Z and A 645 120mm Macro F4, on separate overcast days in 2015:
1/100s, f10, ISO 1000

1/80s, f25, ISO 1000

Good luck with your quest. I hope this helps.

Rufous are just Allen's minus green. Also pretty birds.

I've not seen violet-green swallows. You may have something unique to photograph there. It took me 10 years to get to the process I use now (trial and error), but I can now sell them at local art shows and online. Develop a process and you may be able to do the same...

The number of shots daily varies with bird activity, but often not how one might think. If I get a dominant bird in the yard, she may be good at chasing the other birds away, and I'll get only 75 shots of just her. But when it's busy, and they all get along, I can get days where it shoots more than 2500. I've noted more than 8 different birds in the yard at times.

Thank you all. The photo isn't one of its best, shot at mid-day, so lighting wasn't the best. But still, it's a pretty clear shot.

Yes, catch-in-focus is used here. Current lens of choice is the SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm F4 (a steal at $50), set at 210mm, about 6' from a feeder. It's powered by a 12V, 9A battery and a voltage regulator to drop the voltage to the 7.4V the camera requires. I set it up just before sunrise and let it shoot until around noon, then re-orient it for the afternoon sunlight. On hot days, when it gets over 95F, the built in over-temp function kicks in, and I have to unlock the shutter release and re-engage it. I also fashioned a cover for it, out of .0125" (0.31mm) shim stock to keep birds from pooping on it. Good thing, it's gotten pretty crusty over the years.

My Pentax K-50 sits in our yard, daily, snapping away at all the hummingbirds that pass through our yard. It has been doing that since July, 2015. Today, it took photo 300,000. This is it, of a young female Allen's Hummingbird. I hope it lasts for 300,000 more. ;)

If you're handy with a soldering iron and can read schematics, you might want to check this out: DIY AC Adapter for The Pentax K10D and K20D | The Roaming Drone I use 2 of these daily to shoot hummingbirds, dawn to dusk, powered by 12v batteries for UPSs.

You're welcome. Given the design of the clamping mechanism on the hood, it can move if mishandled. This is as secure as if the hood were mounted directly on the lens. So, as long as the step-up ring is securely threaded on the lens, and the hood is securely clamped on the ring, then I'd say Yes. If one were to bump it, it will move, but then the whole camera may.

I'll take that as a compliment. ;) Thank you, Sir.
My SMC-A 645 35mm was purchased used more than 8 years ago, when I had a 645N. According to the lens reviews here, a new one originally came with a round hood. My lens, if I recall correctly, was purchased from KEH, as a 'bargain' lens, sans caps. I find it was a bargain, for me, and this clip on hood, which I adapted later, has worked well on it. :)
Now that you've reminded me, I've got to go off and see how it fits on my SMC-A 67 45mm...

645z finicky shutter release button?

I have a tendency to use those $5 wired remotes one finds on the Bay. The manufacturer names are Neewer, Yonguo, Shoot, etc., and they frequently look similar, except for the name printed on them. I use them on all my bodies that have the remote socket (*istD, K10D, K-50, K-5, K-3, K-1, 645Z). I'll buy 3 or 4 at a time, since they're so cheap. They typically last a couple years, and then the simulated gold contacts seem to wear away, and I get intermittent operation from them. When they start to fail, I can half-press the button and nothing happens. If I wiggle the connector, rotate it in its socket, or pull it out and reinsert it, frequently it will start to work again, for a while, and I know it's time to order more. They're so cheap, I keep them in every camera bag (9), and backpack (3) I own. I even have one in the car.

My 3-year-old 645Z has an admittedly low shutter count of 12,700, and has had no issue with the on body shutter release or remote socket.

Does the shutter operate properly if the lens aperture ring is in the 'A' position? If so, you should be able to shoot wide open using the aperture control on the camera. Good luck.

I had the lockup problem in Scotland last year. It was fairly repeatable, in ~1C weather, shooting panoramas with mirror lockup. This, even with freshly charged batteries. I stopped using mirror lockup, which helped considerably.

I'd like to see:
1) a firmware update to the 645Z to add catch-in focus
2) a light ultra wide for the 645, maybe 20mm, f4, no OS
3) firmware updates across all cameras, where possible, to add the depth bracketing of the PK

Yes, they are difficult to find. I got mine online at Japan Exposures. Dirk there has always been helpful. If you don't see what you're looking for, contact him and he'll get it for you if it's available. Accessories :: Viewfinder - | japan exposures shop
