It's some time since I actually logged in to participate: Life has been somewhat tumultuous for the last few years and photography has been reduced to the odd snapshot or three.
The offer of the 31mm lens has stirred me out of my lethargy - at least for now. ;)

My health is not good and my energy levels, and with it my inspiration, swing dramatically; so please excuse my lack of consistency.

As any Australian will know, the current government here is determined to take us back to the early days of the industrial revolution with respect to community services and welfare, and their policies - on both sides of the political divide - with respect to unauthorised refugees arriving by small boat, are draconian and inhumane in the extreme.
A lot of my time and energy has been taken up monitoring their activities and 'putting my oar in' wherever and whenever I am able.
It's not much, but every little helps when it comes to bringing these nefarious and unchristian activities to public attention.
The News Limited ( very, very limited news) influence is overwhelming in its one-eyed support of this extreme right wing administration, making the information available to the public decidely unbalanced.

But enough of Aussie politics.

I hope to be able to catch up with some of the last years' postings over time.

All the Best to you all for the "Festering Season". ;)
May you all have a safe and happy new year.

Once upon a time, in the deep dark days of 35mm Kodachromes and dodgy film libraries, I borrowed a Nikon, complete with fancy name strap, and got the owner to photograph me wearing it.
This pic adorned my Curriculum Vitae for many years.
It was, of course, taken on my own Ricoh.
And so were many of the successful submissions that, undoubtedly, the agencies assumed were Nikon made images.
The ever reliable MX series cameras did many of the others.
Brand snobbery was as common then as it is today.
Even to the point of one agency that would only accept 6x6 images made on Hasselblad, they thought, being duped by slightly modifying my lovely Mamiya C330s . ( I got that idea from another "cheat")
The 'Blads had an identifying 'pimple' on the edge of the frame which could be imitated by affixing a false mask to the Mamiyas.
The quality of the images was never in question.
There's an old saying: ""Bull$#it baffles brains" which certainly applied to the industry in those days.

I'm more than a month late in getting to this thread - I was actually searching for something entirely different - please excuse me.

The outstanding point that has not been made re. this review is that the whole function of magazine publishers is to sell magazines.
That means catering to the fanboys.
There are more canikon fans than the pentax variety ergo more sucking up to the majority who would not buy subsequent issues of any mag. that trashed their judgement re. the choice of gear.

Remember also that magazines must make a profit for their proprietors.
One of the baseline costs is that of personnel. Paying top dollar for experienced and competent photographer journalists is simply beyond their means.

"Never mind the quality. Feel the width." as the old saying goes.

This is my first visit to the site in a coons age. I got seriously side-tracked.
But I must voice my delight in this thread and the good grace and humour promulgated by the posters.
A fine start to the New Year.
Thank you all and my Very Best Wishes for 2009

The red stuff is gunna be reaching over 95˚F, possibly 105˚F for the next week or two here in the "Golden West" (that really should read "straw brown"/scorched) whilst our cousins in Qld, NSW and Victoria are over their heads in water. Bl**dy disasterous all round. So bad that I have mud on the loungeroom carpet where it overflowed from the pictures on the tele!;)

Remember that little nursery rhyme, anyone??

IMHO offense is more often taken than given. (And more often than not with some ulterior motive!)

Yup.

Think light, not camera, and suddenly it seems 'Oh! So simple.'

(In your example the light traveled from the subject and bounced off the mirror before finally arriving at the camera.)

In the (long gone) days when I was taking a lot of theatre and other performance based images I would often use this technique to produce prints with the frame aligned on the diagonal. It also worked well for posters and magazine articles.
With the the computer "frame" being fixed in 'landscape' (unless one has a rotating screen) the effect is generally redundant in full frame images except in particular cases where some 'impressionism' is called for.

What a terrible, terrible waste of band-width.
This has been a most unedifying thread.
RH has once again successfully stirred up a nest of hornets over....what???
Nothing of value, for sure.
Time to get on with a bit of introspection and the making of worthwhile images, methinks.

As nobody else seems to want to reply, here's my understanding of the situation: Leica derived from the Leitz Camera concept of using 35mm movie film in a miniature and pocketable camera.
Leitz (of) Wezlar in Germany had been in business for some time prior.
There are several well written books on the history of this ground breaking concept which you might care to read if you are so inclined.

And you want choccie bars?!?
Most of the guys on this forum want a built-in GPS, beer tap and coffee-maker (amongst others) on the next generation K**D.
I'd settle for the Bristol in your pix as a means to port my photogear about.:)
