Reviewer Bias

Well, it is very obvious when you read reviews from DP Review, which is owned by Amazon now. It all comes down from Amazon sales so it understandable to see why their bias comes from. Before Amazon, DPR was great back in the days of Phil Askey. He reviewed everyone and was pretty fair.

To me they look like dead pixels. Use the Pixel Mapping option in the menu and it should take care of it.

O-GPS1 Simple Navigarion

I just got this for my K-70 for geo and astrotracking for my trip to Maui in a couple weeks. I tested and all looks fine but when I read the manual, it shows a simple navigation option in the menu but I dont see it in my camera. My firmware is up to date so it is not that. I dont know if I would ever use the simple nav or not but just curious as to what is up with it. Anyone know?

21,000 actuations on my K-30 and never had a problem. I moved up to a K-70 now though but not because of any problems with my K-30. I guess I was lucky.

Pentax K70 vs Nikon/Canon counterparts

+1 on that. If you are looking for sports or action photography, I would say Nikon. If you want video, don't go to Pentax, but for the most bang for the buck, there is no comparison.

What brought me to Pentax was high ISO performance. I started with a K-X 7 years ago and I chose it because it had the best high ISO in my mind against Nikon or Canon. I moved up to a K-30 and a week ago purchased a K-70. I am awestruck from how clean the K-70 pics look. But that is what was and is important to me. To each his own though.

I just moved up from a K30 to a K70. Both are great cams but unfortunately, the K70 no longer supports wireless flash. The only way to work with the K70 that I know of is to purchase a Cactus wireless trigger on camera.

Yeah that is the only disappointing thing I see. I have used my Metz 52 and K-30 and it works great. I think I will be upgrading to the K-70 soon, though the lack of no wireless is not a dealbreaker, it is very disappointing. I don't know what the reason why they omitted it.

Well, if I recall, you are using manual lenses. Have you set up the menu for focus peaking ?
Also, I question if you have looked at the manual or not, the K-30 has the ability to set up over/underexposure (The blikies) so your question is not correct in that regard. Of course, you need to be in live view for both focus peaking and over/underexposure indicators but I would assume you would know that since the OVF will not show either...or maybe you don't know that.

recurring problem with pentax K30

I had this happen one time on my K-30 and thought that it might have been bad contacts within the camera. I used a cotton swab with alcohol and cleaned off the internal contacts and also the AA adapter since I use them most often and since that time, maybe a year ago, I have never had a problem.

I have spent some rough days on my treks in the jungle areas in the Philippines and have spent more than my share of water...too much water actually....with my K-30. Though I never dunk it in a pale of water, it seemed like it at times because I have been through some major downpours. Ever see Forrest Gump where they talk about Vietnam ? Big drops, sideways drops, drops bouncing up to hit you in the face. Typhoons are the worst with the addition of wind. Glad the water is warmer rain there. :) I was a little hesitant at first to be out in just a normal drizzle but in other times, what can you do. I would always go Pentax anyways so I would never be without a WR outfit and I am not sure how non-WR can handle it, even under plastic. Sometimes it water gets everywhere in certain conditions.

You can buy the screen, Pentax MF-60 is the original. Same as for the K-7, K-5XX and the K-30/50. They are around $40 in Ebay. Get the authentic Pentax screen, not third party..

Well, I can attest that in many downpours in the Philippines that my K-30 has never had a problem. I never worry about it at all as it has been through Typhoons and just normal showers can hit you in a minute with ALOT of water, hmmm....but I never tried it in soapy water.

Well, I do something stupid at least every day. ;)

As for focusing screen, let's see, scratched one in my K-x and one in my K-30. They are not hard to replace but they are so delicate. Sometimes it feels like if you breath on it the wrong way, it will scratch. :)

Happened to me too a year ago. I thought for a moment about using glue but really don't think it would have worked. No problem without it , just need to always remember to turn the camera battery compartment side up when changing batteries or else it will fall out.

I see a lot more interest from Pentax both here and DPR. By far, this is the best site for Pentaxians. Adam and the gang do an excellent job here and there is a great group here.

Lenses for Hawaii trip

I love Hawaii, I go there at least every couple years and Maui is a great island. If it were me:

50 1.8
35 2.4
HD 55-300
Sigma 10-20

You have two great plastic primes, the 18-135 walk around, the 55-300 for longer reach, I assume you will do whale watching since it is this time of the year so that would be great, and the wide angle for when you go to Hana or Haleakala, for sure.

The booth looks great. :)

I really like the display of the FF days from the beginning to now.

I worked for Seiko for 9 years and they have a museum similar to this. When I went to Makuhari, Chiba a couple times, the first floor at HQ shows the beginnings of the watch and then expanded upon the need to add plotters and printers for watch design, which, of course Epson sprang out of (son of Electrostatic Plotter), and their robotics division for watch manufacturing. Everything Seiko ever did began with the watch. It is great to see how Pentax remembers it's roots.

What exactly are the problems you are having ? I have had a K-30 since 2012 and have never had a problem. You are not able to use on manuel, exactly what does that mean ? I would suggest that you use in Auto or at least P mode to get started until you move to Manual mode, Unless you set up the menus differently, once you are in M mode, press the green button and it will meter correctly for the most part and you can then change aperture and shutter speed to change as you want. Suggestion would be not to be so disappointed after a couple pictures. Read the manual, use P or auto mode to start just to see what aperture/shutter speeds that the camera is selecting and you can see how your pictures look based on that and change in M mode as you go.

The K-30 is a great camera. I always think about upgrading but I get great pics from it so I keep asking myself why to upgrade if I love what it produces. If you get pictures that you did not expect, post a copy here and we can give you suggestions on what is going on.

A week ago, I would have said this was a DPR review because DPR has always seems so negative towards Pentax but at least since the release, they seem to really understand it and like it. This guy here, who I also never really saw reviewing before, has no clue about what this camera has and will do, and without that, he starts to bash it. He disregards weather sealing but I guess he has never shot in the rain, he doesn't understand the LED lights, but to me, for astrophotographers, that looks to be really cool and he doesn't even mention pixel shift. He looks like a dorm room guy sitting there, just finished his Little Ceaser's and said "Hey, lets read what CNET has to say about the K-1 and blog it". What is great is that the K-1 has has for the most part extremely favorable responses from well know sites and reviewers.

I would ignore this guy and tell him to just forget about reviewing what you don't know about and have another slice of Pizza.

I have the Tammy 18-200 myself and it is a very good lens all things considered. Does well for outside shots, indoor with enough light is ok and it is only $199 bucks US. Down side is it is a heavy lens and I don't know how it would be with a camera grip as small as the K-S1. Works great for my K-30 though.
