645 Lens Tests - Identifying the top performers - Again

Thank you for putting this list together. It is a lot of work and much appreciated. I do not have any 645 bodies but bought the FA 45-85. FA 200 and the A120 in hopes of getting into the 645 system. Given how good my K1 is, I decided to forgo the 645. I sold the FA 45-85 but still have the FA 200 and the A 120. I use the A120 with an adapter on my K1 and it is fantastic for macro work.

Me too. Never had any issues with any lens or cameras (five bodies and seven lenses) since joining the Pentax digital world in 2012. Never had issues with my Pentax film-era gear either. My friend who is a die-hard Pentaxian had an issue with his K-30 but that is about it. He never had serious issues either other than that one incident. He has a lot more Pentax gear than I do.

Buying a Pentax 645Z in 2021

That would work perfectly. That is why I have kept a few of my Pentax 645 lenses. I was thinking of getting into 645Z at some point. But if it ends up being a Fuji MF body, then I can still use my excellent Pentax 645 lenses. I will be using this set up for landscape and studio product photography and I would not need the autofocus anyway.

I agree 100%. That is why I prefer my K1 over my Fuji XT bodies for still photography. I use my Fuji XT cameras mostly for video. In my mind, it comes down to confidence in the system and the company behind it. Obviously I am a Pentax guy and will support them for as long as I can. Investing in any medium format is costly. Pentax and Fuji are at the low end of the price spectrum. Hassy and Phase One are at the upper end. If I ever go medium format, my budget is at the low end. The ultimate question for me is; would there be an empty chair left for Pentax when the music stops?! I have to make any future purchase decision with this question in mind.

As much as I am a Pentax fanboy, I am afraid you are right. One thing that worries me about any system, especially pricy photo gear, is service. The only company that I have dealt with that has been solid is Canon. The rest of the camera industry sucks when it comes to service. I think Sony and Fuji are moving fast to remedy the situation. Pentax, from all the horror stories I have heard or read about is in no hurry to do anything about service. That alone would stir me toward Fuji, getting a brand-new 100MP MF camera with IBIS and 4K video for only $1,000 more than the price of a brand-new 645Z is icing on the cake!

New kit recommendations based around the K1 MKII - Pentax newbie

I have had the K1 ever since it came out. I bought the 28-105 with it and it does most of what I photograph. I also have a few other lenses (FA Limited trio, Tamron 70-200, Pentax 50 and 100 macros, Samyang 14, Tokina 20-35 in addition to a bunch of manual Takumar and other K-mount lenses) The one lens that I am missing is the Pentax (Tamron rebrand) 15-30mm f2.8. That is the lens that will help you with your astro and landscape work. The Samyang 14 I have is fine but it is limited in its focal length and the the Tokina 20-35 needs to be stopped down for sharp images. For your astro work you will be shooting at or near wide-open. So, you need a lens that is sharp wide open. The only viable and flexible (as in zoom lens) that I know of is the 15-30. As far as tripod choices, it depends. If you are gonna backpack, then you need something light weight Mefoto or something like that in the $100-150 range will do. If you do not mind the weight, then get a bigger tripod, carbon fiber if the budget allows. I have four tripods. Two are legacy from years ago and two are newer. I bought a ballhead for one and the lighter tripod came with a ballhead. Non of them did the job so I finally bought a pro ballhead that is fantastic. The downside is that the ballhead cost as much as my bigger tripod. For bags, go for something that will fit your gear. Again, I have a bunch of bags that I bought over the years. The one I use the most is a Tamrac old-style over the shoulder bag. I use my rolling Vanguard backpack for air travel and travel by car. It gets too heavy for backpacking. One thing you did not mentions was SD cards. I use Sandisk Extreme Pro. They have never failed me in 20+ years of digital photography. I guess there is a lot more but I think I'll stop here and let other forum members chime in. Good luck and welcome to the Pentax world.

Buying a Pentax 645Z in 2021

I have been wanting to buy the 645Z for sometime now. I have a K1 and a few lenses now and I do not see the need for the 645Z. The marginal extra resolution does not warrant the considerably more expensive body and lenses. The only lens I am missing is the 15-30 which I will get at some point. My recommendation, get a K1 with the 15-30, 24-70 and the Tamron 70-200. All of them used, the price will be in the $3,000-3,500 USD range. Not bad for a complete system. If I want more resolution, I would go to the 100MP or above sensor world which means Fuji for "reasonable" prices. Hassy and PhaseOne are way out of my price range. As much as I hate to say it, Pentax 645 line is dead as the cost of further development my not be wise for Pentax. They need the R&D monies for FF and APSc lines.

Ideas for the next 645 (pure speculation)

I would have sold my car and all the cameras I own to buy a 6x7 digital! But we know that is just a dream. As far as size of camera goes, I mostly agree with you. I like a hefty camera for studio and landscapes with close by access to my car trunk. For backpacking landscaping, I would want to carry the lightest kit possible. I am afraid that the upcoming $3-3.5K Fuji is going to deliver all those requirements. If Pentax releases a medium format follow up to 645Z, I think it would be the gutsiest move in all of photographic equipment history.

In order to consider development of any new camera, they have to estimate anticipated units they are going to sell. The initial 645Z success came from the fact that it was the first to market and the value proposition was hard to beat. So Pentax had a good head start. Now, we have Fuji that has taken that value proposition from Pentax. It is not just about a new body. With a new body, you need modern new lenses. I think it will take massive investment on Ricoh's part to develop a new body and at least 4-5 new lenses to compete. Fuji has already released four bodies and plenty of lenses to support the system. The ROI for Pentax is not there anymore. They have to sell in the tens of thousands to justify the cost of R&D. I don't see that happening. 645Z was a gift that Pentax squandered away by not following up on further development. I think the game is over on the MF side for Pentax. They will be much better off focusing on FF and APS-c.

Will you buy the k3 Mark 3?

K1 stays. I was going to sell the K5IIs until my son tried it and prefers using it over the Fuji X-T2 I had given to him to try. The few paid projects I do these days require high MP output so my next purchase would be the K1-next. I am toying around with letting my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 go but given the prices they command, I am inclined to hold on to it. My two Fujis are going to go in favor of one with better video specs which is the primary use of the system. You are right about the lenses. They are harder to cull. My 28-105 gets the most use. All my other Pentax lenses hardly get any use. When I want to go "Total Pro!," I bring out the Three Amigos.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for the review. I checked out the images and as expected they look great. I have no doubt that Pentax has delivered another winner. I own a K1 and K5IIs and owned two K3s which I sold in favor of the K1. The big question for me is the focusing and video quality. I tried K1 for a few weddings. One of them was a paid gig and the others were family and Friend's weddings. Even with my Three Amigos limited lenses, the K1 hunted and missed focus and just drove me crazy so much so that I gave up. Of course these were indoor shots at church and other indoor areas. Outside my K1 did great. I know you are a K1 shooter and have seen pro-class images from you, The coffee maker campaign was simply brilliant. My question is about the focusing of the K3III compared to K1 for indoor situations. Does the camera nail the shot or does it miss or hunt!

The other question is about the video. The short clip you posted looked great. Did you use the stabilization for the video clip?

Thanks,
Boris

I think this is a world class camera but not for me because I do not do much with the APSc format for my photography. I do however use APSc for video which is why I got into the Fuji X system. I wish they had come up with this earlier. This would have provided the video capability I needed and eliminated the additional cost of adding another camera system. I will be very interested in the next K1 which will give me the added resolution I can use for my commercial and landscape work.

If I have a windfall, I will get this camera in a heartbeat and not for the camera alone but to pair it with the 20-40 Limited which I have been wanting ever since it came out.

It is usually the pros who do that. Everyone is obsessed with sharpness. Come to think of it, film in comparison is always softer than digital. Hence that organic feel that everyone loves about film images. The best complement I got was from a friend who was a pro and actually went to photography school. I am self taught. He said, "my images have soul." That kind of stuck with me. I am not doing any photography these days. I have a closet full of Pentax and Fuji gear and I do nothing with them. That should be a crime!! I remember when I was a snuggling student and saved up all summer to buy my Pentax MX and a "coke bottle" Sigma 39-80. Man I was in the clouds with my new camera. Now I have a mini camera store's worth of gear and do nothing with it! I guess the soul is dead!

I have done lots of panoramic photos with my K3 and now K1. You can achieve similar resolution with a 4 or 5 image pano. Photoshop processes the images in minutes. However, I would love to have the GFX 100 though!

Sensor in K1 MkII successor?

I do not have an issue with focus stacking. The issue comes in when you have a scene with trees or leaves that move. The same issue when dealing with pixel shift images. That is why I have not used the pixel shift in my K1 much if ever. When shooting landscapes, I almost always have some kind of a moving object, be it a tree or flowing water, etc.

In my product photography with strobes, again the pixel shift is not usable. I can use continuous lighting but that is a whole new set of lights and additional investment.

I can see focus stacking application for product photography, even with strobes. It is easy to do and as you noted the post is easy too with the available software today.

I have done exposure bracketing on a few projects which deals with multiple images being combined. Again for static situations it works like a charm. My issue is with any element that moves within the composition. Same goes for focus stacking in non-static scenes.

Sensor in K1 MkII successor?

I agree. That is why I will be a buyer of the 60MP K1 successor. I do landscapes and some commercial work and K1 is ok but I could use the additional resolution offered by the 60MP sensor. In reading about the available medium format offerings, one particular pro user tried and ended up selling the system and going back to 35mm format. The reason was razor thin depth of field of MF. What that means for practical landscape work, you have to do focus stacking to get acceptable depth-fo-field. This to me defeats the purpose of a hi-res MF sensor. A hires 35mm sensor has much better DOF for the same focal length. If the new K1 comes in below $2,800 for the body, they can sign me up for one, may be two of them!!

There are rumors that Fuji will be releasing the new version of their GFX50R with IBIS and video capabilities. That is not the wow news. The wow in this camera is the $3,000-3,500 price tag. If Fuji manages to do that, that would put a big dent in the Nikon and Canon hi-res DSLR biz.

Cost of developing a new cameras are high. Manufacturers have to sell in sufficient quantities to recover their R&D and tooling costs. 645Z was revolutionary when it came out and Pentax missed a big opportunity to use it and dominate that 645 market. A 100MP 645Z successor would have to sell like crazy to justify the cost of development. How many of them do you think they are going to sell?

Releasing a 60MP K1 successor, which is a logical step, would effectively end the 645Z line. I have been wanting (not needing) to get a 645Z ever since it came out. So, getting the K1 kind of got me there most of the way. Now with the K1III or whatever the name might be and a 60MP sensor, I no longer need the old 645Z. Remember, it is not just the 645Z body, you still have to get lenses for it. With a high-res next K1, I do not have to get a whole new line of lenses.

That is a good guess. Pentax would use it if Sony makes it available. I hope they do as it will give me the "medium format" resolution I have been looking for!!

---------- Post added 03-17-21 at 12:48 PM ----------

Although I am totally happy with my K1's resolution a 70% boost (36 to 61) in resolution cannot hurt. I have been wanting to get a 645 but that would require a whole new set of lenses and a different body. With a 60MP K1 successor, I get to use the same lenses I already have and perhaps get one more lens to fill the wide angle gap. My guess is that Pentax has given up on the 645 platform. Fuji owns that space now (unfortunately!). So if there is no 645, then they should at least give us a higher res K1. That would stop me from jumping ship to Fuji. If they give us a little better video specs, I can get rid of my Fuji X cameras (for video work) and go all in with Pentax.
