Maybe a misaligned mirror. With possibly a deeper laying problem

What happens in live view?

Any other Nutella recipes?

Memory card not formatting on my K-3 ii

If I'm correctly informed, the flue card needs to go in the first slot. From a couple of years ago, I remember that some people had issues with it.

Yes, the flue card allows wifi access.

I would advise to by a decent normal card (32GB or more); can't advise which one would be needed; I'm a little out of it.

I'm born in the Netherlands and lived there for 40 years. If I recall correctly, 5C was a warm winter day. I now live in South Africa in a region where 0C is a cold night in winter.

Went on holiday to the Kruger national park this Christmas and had 2 weeks of dry 40C.

And I know what you mean by humidity. Spent a few times a week in Sri Lanka; when the doors of the airplane open, the sudden heat and humidity hits one badly.

What do you mean by the "second mirror"?

My feel is that you bought a bad camera; return it if it was not as advertised.

The buttons make intermittent contact and hence it sometimes refocuses; this can probably be solved with contact cleaner although I have no idea how to do it on a WR camera body (you might have to strip it).

PS
I do not have a K3/II (nor K3).

Vivitar 285HV Zoom Thyristor on Pentax K-50

Do a search for vivitar 285HV trigger voltage. One link that came up was A Concise Guide to the Vivitar 285 and Vivitar 285 HV and Cactus KF36 with an explanation how to measure. If you want to play it safe anyway, use a Wein SafeSync.

You can also use live view for focusing; e.g. with focus peeking and magnification. Not absolutely convenient for handheld but good if you are using a tripod.

And there is something called catch-in-focus where the camera will take the photo only if it thinks that the subject is in focus (itiggt get it wrong though).

30 years ago I wrote digital image processing demonstration software for inspection of e.g. beer bottles.

Never imagined that stuff like that would evolve to what is described in the article and what we use now.

My K10D has been collecting dust for a while. Decided to check the battery; OK, still full.

Let's take a picture; turning the front dial while in Av and nothing happens. Change to Tv and front dial works. Back to Av and it does not work. What the heck? Close to resetting to factory defaults and then I realised that it has a rear dial as well :o

So that happens when you mostly shoot with a K100D and ignore the K10D :D

I have everything I need.

Or maybe not. Maybe I still need that DA12-24? Or the DA15Ltd and DA21Ltd?

But no, wide is not my style. But wouldn't those Takumar fisheyes be nice, just for something different? And then I need the DA10-17 to be able to compare them.

Oh, but my amigo is also still missing its two mates.

Aaaaaargh .....

There was a hardware design change when the K5 was launched and (with an electronics background) I can visualise what it is / was; the described behaviour indicates that Pentax went from a transistor based solution to a thyristor based solution for the trigger circuit.

A transistor is like a relay, apply power and it switches on and remove the power and it switches off. A thyristor is like a latching relay; apply power and it switches on, remove power and it stays on; to switch it off, the current through the main relay contacts needs to become zero. And that what those 3rd party flashes do not take into account; there might be a small leakage current that is high enough to keep the thyristor in the camera in the on state.

I don't expect Ricoh to revert back to the old design.

I would (un)happily send it in if it's still under warranty. There might be something wrong with a seal.

So long ago that I got a new card but to my knowledge you will need to format the card in the camera to get the basic folder structure before you can take photos.

I think you're one of the few ones. I have always been impressed; the only concert that I shot on digital: toyota jacaranda pops 2011 (2MB photos !) - PentaxForums.com. K5, mostly ISO 3200 (exif is intact).

The one event that I mentioned was a street concert and mostly with a 70-210/4. I remember that I had to use every support that I could find, tent poles, street lights, trees etc. Shutter speeds of 1/30 second at 200mm.

Using flash?

Maybe use one camera with BW film that you can push to ISO 1600 and the other camera with colour film and flash.

I did shoot the occasional family gatherings long ago on film. But did use flash. I also shot an evening / night event with Ilford HP45 pushed to 1600.

No idea what is nowadays on the market.

//Edit, I think it's HP5

Which Lens?

Any idea how close you can get to the cats? That will basically determine which focal length you need for that. A 70-210 might be more useful for that specific subject; it will give you four times more magnification compared to the 50 mm. Maybe add a 1.4 teleconverter.

That might leave something to be desired at the wider end. I can't really advise, check the earlier mentioned lens reviews.

I also copy all files from camera to PC.

Next I copy those files to a work directory where I do a preview and delete what is obviously wrong (e.g. totally out-of-focus); I do spend some time though on it to try to determine where I or the camera went wrong.

Next I process and store the resulting photos in a final directory.
