Got Squirrel Shots? (In memorial of Rupert)

This picture was taken through the window - as usual because the squirrels take off as soon as they see me - but the rain was belting down; not good picture-taking conditions, but I'm posting it because I've never seen a squirrel use its tail as an umbrella, flat against its body to break the rain instead of the usual graceful curve. I forget the day's total rainfall, but I do remember that this was the highest rainfall ever recorded on a day in February, and the February total is now up to 8.0" {this is not Florida; before this month, the highest total ever recorded for a February is 5.2".

I don't believe the 'accelerator' is a facelift'. We don't understand it yet - apparently KP didn't get as much exposure as it should have - but it definitely is not a facelift!

I don't believe dynamic pixel shift is a facelift. The Mark ii was out for just a few hours, and at another discussion forum an Olympus user was saying how much he hoped the next iteration of Olympus's flagship has dynamic pixel shift also.

I'm sorry you feel that way, and I believe you are incorrect.

At another photo discussion forum, a place where Pentax is usually ignored, a thread was started by someone not me, and has received considerable responses, about the new hand-held pixel shift. A Pentax innovation being noticed by people who often don't even admit that Pentax exists.

I believe the 'accelerator' has the potential to revolutionize how we use photography.

I don't see these as 'defensive' at all.

Most of the 'upgrade' is in the words people skip on their rush to the specs .... the 'accelerator' {whatever that is} and the new stuff that seems to make the pixel shift more useful.

Samsung NX2 - is it real?

No, they have a 'speed booster', F-mount to Q-mount, with promise of K-mount and M42-mount versions to come. The theory is that a 50mm f/1.4 lens will become a 25mm f/0.7 lens.

0.666 Devil's Speed Booster for Pentax Q - PentaxForums.com

I cannot think of any reason to develop something like that for a moribund mount, but the idea of having a 25mm f/0.7 lens is very appealing to me. On my Q-7, that would act roughly like a 120mm lens.

That chip has been in the KP for a year; we should know by now what they're doing with it, because I'm sure they've been using the KP to try it before putting it in the 'higher' camera.

Some of you may be old enough to remember when Kodak moved from K-12 to K-14 chemistry, from 'K' film to 'KM' film. There were some Kodachrome users who filled their freezers with the old 'K' film because they trusted it, while others of us charged ahead with the "new and improved" 'KM' film. We may see the same kind of thing here.

So someone, anyone, could start a rumor that tomorrow Pentax will release a FF camera with AF faster and more accurate than the Nikon D500, with 20fps burst, 100 image buffer, DxOMark score of 110, priced at $700??

'Loyal follower of Kenspo' is a dumb phrase. He seems to know what is going on, so using him as a reliable source of information only makes sense; in contrast you just guess and spew out word.

When I first joined here, there was a strong "we need FF camera so our old lenses can be themselves" under-current, but I'm guessing the truth was that most actual users were like me; for reasons of recent history, my most useful lenses are DA lenses, so APS cameras are most useful to me. Unlike many APS users, though, the KP meets my needs {with the exception of my need for enough $$$ to put a KP in my closet}. So this topic is of interest to many of us, but nagging in the background is the thought "But spending my money, will require something else"

I totally disagree.

I think it is obvious where 'this company' is putting its resources - into improved Image Quality.

The Nikon D500 that has so many people drooling is actually slightly worse than other Nikon products at IQ, but apparently is great at AF. I'm sure Pentax will work on AF, but IQ seems to be where their heart is.

Added: in another thread I commented that FF isn't for me these days; I have a few thirty-year-old FF lenses, but all my current stuff is APS. The KP is aimed at people like me .... getting K-1 benefits at thousands less.

No - there are hardware changes doing things that could not be done in software.

---------- Post added 02-20-18 at 12:16 PM ----------

Unless we hear otherwise, my expectation is that everything from the KP {not related to the crop sensor} will be in the K-1ii.

I chose not to even enter Ricoh's Facebook-based contest for a new K-1. In order for getting a K-1 to make sense, I would have to purchase several DFA lenses; yes, I do have some old manual focus film lenses, but for me, the K-1 would spend much of its time in 'crop mode' - in essence, the K-1 would be a fancy APS camera. The KP is that camera at half the cost ... honestly, I don't know how large that market is.

To me, there is little point to making the queue larger/faster unless they also improve the autofocus. Clearly they could have released a 'KP' with that improved queue, but I believe the complaints would be even louder now. As it is, words from Kenspo should give you hope of getting the camera you want once they get the AF figured out.

This whole discussion is sinking into dumbness.

In less than two days, we expect the real announcement.

Some time in the future, those of us who want to will have a real camera to try these things.

Patience!!

The thing everyone seems to miss is that the three most recent cameras {K-70, KP, K-1} all are said to do quite well in low light {this is hard to report on, because DxOMark was in much more of a hurry to report on the Nikon D850 than on the KP}. I believe high ISO is where cameras are going, so I am perfectly comfortable with what is happening with Pentax bodies. I would like to see a little more action on FF lens, even though I don't expect to purchase another FF system {I'm 70 now; my last FF system was 35mm system}

This is probably way too speculative, but ...

Several times during my career I wrote firmware, which required that I work closely with hardware design engineers. When I saw this thing, I didn't think "someone playing with KP"; no, I thought "design engineer exploring ways to extend KP to create KR, the successor to the K-3ii". I don't want to start any fanciful rumors here, but to get people to put aside their K-3, K-3ii, etc cameras, most of the changes to the KP would be hidden inside {mostly queue-related}, but if I were design engineer eavesdropping here, battery would be near the top of my list, and that would require a nontrivial expansion of the body; eliminating the removable aspect of the grip would be one way to accomplish that goal.

Apart from electrical contacts, how large is the KP's 'large grip' - what kind of battery could they get in there?

Experiences With Raw

During the past week I have discovered that many PF regulars have spent the past year ignoring the KP - in particular, ignoring the existence of the "accelerator" chip included in the KP. Now, all of a sudden, they have come to understand that the KP has been preparation for the future of Pentax, because that "accelerator" will be included in the K-1ii, and some are close to freaking out about how that chip affects "raw" files. I do not own a KP, and once I get one, most likely I will accept JPEGs from the camera, but for the sake of these nervous folk, I'm here to ask questions:

What issues have you had in processing 'raw' files from the KP?

Have you noticed any differences between 'raw' files from the KP and any other 'raw' files you may have processed in the past?

And if its still OPEN, you might contribute to this thread
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/16-pentax-news-rumors/360628-pentax-k-1-...ns-leaked.html
because the number of people with KP experience seems to be really low.
