Easy Question - Raw/Fx button

None of the replies so far address the issue I have, which may be your issue as well. I normally shoot in raw, but would like the ability to quickly and temporarily switch to jpg using the raw/Fx button. There does not appear to be a menu option for this. You can go from jpg to raw, but if you are shooting in raw, the button can't be programmed to switch to jpg. Am I missing something?

I have set up the User modes so that User 1 is my normal raw shooting mode and User 2 is the same setup but in jpg. But it would easier if the raw/fx button to switch to jpg. I know that I can use the Info menu to switch, but the button is quicker - seems like an easy firmware fix.

You can save more money by ordering through Mr. Rebates (no, I don't work for them :D). Mr. Rebates - Mr. Rebates offers a 3% rebate for cameras purchased from Adorama. Just log on/register at the Mr. Rebates site, search for Adorama, and then place your order as though you were starting out at the Adorama site. Mr. Rebates will send you a check for the 3%, but it can take 2-3 months. We have been doing this successfully for years.

credible online k-5 sellers, that has resolved the "stain" issue

I received a K-5 from Abe's of Maine last week that had a serial number of 383XXX and an assortment of stains in the middle of the sensor. I sent it back and ordered one from Adorama and got a 393XXX serial number, firmware 1.01, but it is stain free - a keeper.

No one I talked to at Abe's had any knowledge of the stain problem - one person thought I was returning it because of stains on the camera body:D

Abe's of Maine for k-5

I ordered the K-5 from Abe's of Maine and received it today. The serial number was very early (383XXXX) and when I did the stain check there was a cluster of 3 spots in the center of the image, visible at f/16. It's already on it's way back and I ordered another from Adorama.

No one I spoke to at Abe's was aware of the sensor stain problem and they noted that they had no provisions for checking serial numbers on cameras shipped to them.

Sarah, you need to find out why Abe's is still shipping old stained K-5's

What do you select for your 5 user modes?

I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the K-5 (waiting for those pesky spots to disappear), but that hasn't stopped me from thinking about it. Your list looks similar to what I might do, but it occurred to me that I should make my normal shooting mode one of the user modes. That way I don't have to fiddle with the mode dial/button to make a change. You may have already done that, but I shoot mostly landscape, so none of yours would work as my normal mode.

Some K-5s shipped with stains on the sensor/AA filter?

Two things:

You can speak to a customer rep at Amazon USA. On their main page click on "Help" from the list at the bottom. Then click on "Returns and Refunds". The site will ask you to sign in and you will get a page with 3 tabs, including one that is "Phone". Click that and provide the requested info. They will then call you at the phone number you give them. I have done it and they do call.

Second, when I bought my K-7 from Amazon, it had AF issues. I followed the directions on the pink sheet on the box and contacted Pentax instead of Amazon. They told me to send it to them for repairs. They sent it back with the issues not fixed and by the time I got it back, the 30 period for Amazon return had expired. I called Amazon and explained the situation and they agreed to take the camera back for a replacement. They even paid the shipping cost. So give that a try.

Good luck,
Bob

K10D Body for Parts or Repair

Asking Price
$50 + shipping and PayPal fee

Item Location
Bethesda, MD USA

Item Description
Pentax K10D - everything started coming up green about a year ago. Pentax estimated cost to repair of $390 (I believe they said the motherboard needed replacement). Otherwise, the camera is in excellent condition - no scratches, no dust in viewfinder, no dust on sensor as of the last time I used it. The only cosmetic "damage" is that some of the white paint on the OK button is worn off.

I can provide photos, if needed, but other than the OK button, it looks pretty much like it did when I purchased it new in November 2006. Although it was one of the first K10Ds made, it never experienced any of the problems reported for K10Ds. The shutter count is about 11,000. Never dropped or dunked.

Comes with all original cables, manual, charger, battery, and box plus one spare Pentax battery. Both batteries worked fine the last time I used the camera in September 2009.

K-7 Body - Still under warranty- price reduced

Asking Price [B] $690

Item Location
Maryland, USA

Item Description
I purchased this K-7 body new from Amazon on April 1, 2010 (no kidding). It is still under the Pentax 1-year warranty (I also have the 2-year extended warranty, but according to Pentax, that is not transferable). The shutter count is less than 5,500. The camera has been well cared for - it has no scratches and no dust on the sensor or in the viewfinder. I have never seen any dead pixels. It has never been dropped and has never been in the rain or in dusty conditions. It will come in its original box with all of the accessories, battery, cables, strap, software, manuals, etc., included. I will also include the Magic Lantern Guide for the K-7.

All firmware updates have been installed.

Reason for Selling: I plan to purchase the K-5 and already have a K-x as a backup body.

Alex,

I second Mark Langille's comments:

From your descriptions of how you produce these exceptional photos, it sounds like you spend a lot of time at the computer. Can you give us an idea of how many minutes or, more likely, hours, you spend on a typical HDR photo?

Thanks,

I've had my K-7 since early May and mostly use the Pentax 18-250mm lens. I shoot lots of landscape photos at 18mm and center auto focus at infinity and have not experienced any hesitation or hunting (except, of course, when there is nothing to focus on).

K10D owner moving to k-x - a few questions
Posted By BobRad

I had a K10D for 3 years and when that broke I first bought a K-x and then my wife took that and I got the K-7 - so I have on occasion gone back and forth between the K-x and K-7. Most of my photography is on travel. Like you, the front dial on my K-7 is set for exposure compensation and I shoot in Av mode, but I use auto ISO limited to 1600. I haven't found the K-x configuration or switching between cameras to be a problem. I use the top display on the K-7 and easily switch to using the back display on the K-x. I use the green button on both to zero the exposure compensation between subjects. Once you have adjusted the exposure compensation a few times on the K-x (+/- button plus rear dial while looking at the rear screen) it becomes second nature.

I rarely use the video or live view modes (I used the latter the other day when I put the K-7 through the bars of a gate to take a shot and then couldn't get my eye up to the viewfinder).

We have been using Eneloops in the K-x with no problems. If I want to keep weight down, I carry a set of lithiums as backup because they weigh less than the Eneloops.

Repair k10d or buy K-x or K-7?

I went through the same thing about 6 months ago, but my K10D estimated repair cost was a lot higher and cost was not a significant factor. Your decision should be based on what you use the camera for. The K10D is a very capable camera for many types of photography (e.g. landscape), but is not as good as the new models for low light and kid chasing photography.

I eventually bought both new models - my wife uses the K-x and I use the K7. Between these two, I like the larger viewfinder and extra wheel of the K7 and the auto exposure seems much better on the K7 (we shoot RAW, mostly landscapes and cityscapes). I also like the quality feel of the K7 - like the K10D, but smaller and lighter.

While I like both new models, had I been on a tight budget, I would have stayed with the K10D. Unless you absolutely need the improvements provided by the new models, I recommend you get the K10D repaired. IMO the quality of low-iso photos from the K10D is as good as (some say better than) that of the K7 and K-x)

Where can you sell your photos?

hockmason asked: "Is it easy to become part of a stock photo site?"

The simple answer is no! My wife decided a few months ago to submit some of my phoots to a couple of stock photo sites. She submitted a few sets for comments in a forum and some directly to a stock photo site. I think my photos are pretty good, one was published in a magazine recently, and all are taken with a Pentax DSLR. But even though I submitted shots that I thought followed the rules and comments for stock photos, most were rejected. I finally decided that I don't want to take the type of pictures the stock photo sites want. If you pursue this, be ready to check your ego at the door!

K7 problem

I realize that you've found a solution to your problem, but for what it's worth, try ETTR (expose to the right) to reduce the noise in the shadows. I took some indoor shots with my wife's K-x (high iso champ) the other day (I rarely shoot indoors) and noticed a good bit of noise in the shadows. So I played around with exposure compensation on my K-7 and found that at +1 EV the shadow noise was greatly reduced (when compared to the image at the auto exposure setting) after correcting in LR for the added exposure (I shoot in RAW) . Just check your histogram on the camera's LCD and add exposure compensation until you start blowing highlights.

Edit: My apologies to Timichango - I didn't see your response that already included this advice.

K-x focusing

luc,

This is pobably one of the worst types of shots to use to make any judgement about whether your camera is working correctly. Trees can be a problem for any camera and there is little contrast in the scene. To check the focus, take some shots of a more two dimensional scene with distinct edges - like text on a large sign. Many people take photos of a brick wall with distinct joints. I use a large world map hanging on my wall. Also use a tripod to eliminate camera shake from the variables. And chose a very distinct, contrasty vertical or horizontal line to focus on. And take a bunch of shots. With this arrangement you can and should use a wide aperature to check the auto focus at the shallowest depth of field.

Good luck.

No, there's no need to keep silica gel bags in your camera bag - especially since you live in a relatively dry part of the world. And they could cause problems if they broke.

Wilson,

By now your camera is going to be dry, so the silica gel is no longer necessary. If your camera is still working, than consider yourself lucky and don't worry about it until the next time. But you should not expose the K-x to any liquids - as you noted, it's not designed for it and water can get inside the camera in lots of places.

K-7 back-focusing, and lens issues

Hi Mike and welcome to the club. I can't address your specific issue because I don't do much flash photography and have never noticed the problem you describe. But with respect to the kit lenses, they get very high marks from most people on this and the dpreview forums. I started with the original 18-55mm and 50-200mm kit lens 3-1/2 years ago on my K10D, used them for well over a year and was very pleased with the results - many of my favorites were taken on your beautiful island. The new kits are improved and I have had great success with the latest 18-55mm kit on my wife's K-x.

I'm making preparations for another visit to the UK in May and will have my trusty Pentax 18-250mm lens as well as my new Pentax 12-24mm lens to use on my new K-7. I had similar backfocus problems with the K-7 and 12-24mm lens and chose to send them to Pentax for calibration instead of getting a replacement.

The extended warranty offered by Abe's is free to all K-7 purchasers in the US, at least. Just contact Pentax customer service and they will provide details of what documentation and information you need to send to them (it can be via email) and they will provide the full 3 year warranty.

There is a similar thread on dpreview ( Re: New K-7 backfocusing. Cannot fully correct). The original poster tried the double adjustment approach and it worked for him. So apparently it is cumulative. I wish I had known that before I spent $40 shipping my K-7 and lenses to Pentax.
