Miscellaneous development at Ricoh Imaging

There was a Pentax patent about a hybrid viewfinder several years ago, certainly pre-Ricoh.

This is all great and I'd like to see it happen, but personally what I would like Ricoh to focus on at the moment would be shrinking down the size of the camera further.

In Russia, is there a great deal of sentimentality about Russian brands? I always get the impression that Russia is very proud of it's past, could this be used to hawk re-branded Japanese and German cameras?

Samsung FF sensor's rumors

Pentax wouldn't be a large enough customer by itself to get Samsung to manufacture a FF sensor, possibly even if Pentax did all the design work (even if they had the expertise). There would be additional costs in Samsung setting up its fabrication plants to produce a FF sensor which would also add to costs (given that it seems unlikely they are set up already, although who knows!)

The GXR is a good indication that Ricoh has been very prepared to innovate and take risks. I really loved Ricoh's early digital camera designs like the RDC 2 - out there but at least pushing boundaries.

However, the market has changed a lot and is no longer growing in the way that it was, especially with the competition from phones driving consumer expectations of the level of technology a standalone camera should have.

RICOH THETA Plug-in Store Goes Live

I've just got a 360 camera, not a Theta because I wanted something that shot RAW.

The creative possibilities are amazing. From one 360 photo you can create so many possible photographs. I was skeptical at first, but have been very impressed so far.

I suppose this makes sense given the K-1 is marketed as a rugged landscape camera, but I wonder what impact it would have on battery life. Presumably it wouldn't need to heat the elements by much though.

The K-01 was too divisive visually and the lack of a mirror didnt really come with many obvious advantages.

Pentax's best bet would be to try to make it look as much like an MX or an LX as possible. But shrinking it as small as possible whilst maintaining the K-mount is a non-trivial technical challenge.

Without obvious size benefits from mirrorless other advantages would need to be promoted. Meaning things like EVFs would have to be extremely good, fps would have to take advantage of no mirror etc.

---------- Post added 08-29-18 at 05:42 PM ----------

As Rondec said, the technical things (EVF, PDAF on sensor etc) are not Pentax's strong points.

A 7K Theta would be amazing (just got into 360) but the file sizes for video would be crazy big.

Perhaps you could have a modular design whereby for absolute portability you could have a removable rear screen :)

Ricoh as a whole is a much larger company than Nikon. I know it's much more complicated than simply saying "Ricoh could invest more if it wanted to" but there's an element of choice in Ricoh not developing a new mount. Also, just because they could doesn't mean they should.

I certainly agree that anything they did would have to be different but different in a good way, with tangible benefits for customers.

If you could get a mirrorless down to the size of an MX then it could maintain the K-mount but still be as small as a lot of modern mount mirrorless. But that's a huge technical challenge that may be impossible to actually meet.

DPReview manages to do a negative review of the DFA*50

Your words "especially considering the source" and "I don't think we can expect much better from those guys" are the main problems here. A lot of new buyers go on the size and internet presence of a review source and so will trust DPReview to be balanced and evenhanded - which is totally naive (when dealing with any reviewer). For people who know DPReview's general disposition towards Pentax you can read between the lines, use the image comparison tools, or otherwise get what you need from the review. Everyone else has to wade through not just the occasional direct comment, but the constant sense you get that for DPReview for a Pentax product to be good and worth buying it has to be literally messianic. It doesn't have to be better than Canon, Nikon or Sony, it has to redefine photography. OK, maybe that's a bit strong, but you get my point.

DPReview is as much a technology site as it is a photography site. It tends to fixate not on the photographs but on the pixels.

I am quite interested in the Theta and have been trying ti work out what kind of functionality the plug-in store could add.

I assume the APIs don't give the kind kf access to the hardware to enable RAW support?

The other feature I'd be interested in is 'overcapture' (the video recompostion feature that Go pro and Insta 360 One have)

Full frame Pentax (Ricoh) GR-E with curved sensor?

Sure, the sensor impacts the size of the lens but it doesn't mean that all the potential size benefit of a mirrorless camera is negated in all circumstances. The Pentax 43mm, if natively mountable on a mirrorless camera, would result in a more compact kit than when mounted on a K-1. For some lens-body combinations the body is the bigger partner, and shrinking it does make a difference. Mirrorless undoubtably has the potential to be smaller over a conventional DSLR. However, sure, some lens types can't be miniaturised effectively - tele lenses spring to mind. But even in these cases most mirrorless cameras will be lighter and have less volume than an equivalent DSLR. Ergonomics and balance is another issue of course! :p

I also think that depth is a big part of perceived size. The shorter registration distance allows for a mirrorless camera to be thinner, and I think this matters to perceptions of size, even if overall volume is similar.

Full frame Pentax (Ricoh) GR-E with curved sensor?

In terms of DSLRs not requiring R&D investment, I am not so sure.

For me, the advantage of mirrorless cameras is their potential size benefit. However, the Pentax MX film camera is as small as most of those. Were it technically possible to produce a DSLR of that size then I think you'd cut that primary advantage. However, to shrink a DSLR to MX size has many technical challenges that would require significant investment - including in components not normally manufactured by camera companies themselves, such as the LCD screen (which would need to be manufactured as thin as possible).

The official presentation (Ricoh) of the Pentax Mark II

I wasn't trying to argue that Pentax chose to start at 28mm because they didn't want to follow the crowd. I was suggesting that there are considerations around it that are different for Pentax than for Canon (for example), including 28mm being easier to design at a higher level of performance than 24mm, Pentax having more limited resources and less recent 35mm lens design experience and a need to time the lens release with a major camera announcement (the K-1).

Of course, in an ideal world I am sure Pentax would have loved to have produced a 24mm to 100mm+ lens at that point in time.

Exactly, at the time the K-1 launched it had to have the 28-105 lens

A 24 zoom would certainly make sense now though.

Getting slightly back on the track, the K-1 II would actually be a good marketing opportunity for such a lens. Both lenses can easily exist alongside each other differentiated by price.

I think a lot depends on where Pentax believes its niche in the market lies:
- If it thinks it can be profitable by being different to the larger players then a 24-50 f/4 could make sense, assuming the compromise of reduced reach (and I would argue it is a compromise) is necessary for significant gains: prime like image quality, super compact size, excellent close focusing to name a few examples. A kind of flexi-prime concept not dissimilar to the existing ltd zoom.

- If however a significant proportion of Pentax customer's 'cross-shop' then it needs to be competitive with the larger players. So, the lack of a premium 24-105 is a definite lack.

- There could be room for both approaches, but I don't think Pentax has the resources to do both well.
