Which DIY mask pattern should you use? Even experts can’t pick one to recommend.

. . . Peter Tsai, the materials scientist who invented the electrostatic charging technology that N95 masks — the highest-quality medical masks on the market — rely on, also believes that homemade masks are an important part of the United States’ battle against the coronavirus. He offered another material for DIY mask makers to consider: nonwoven fabrics.

Nonwoven fabrics, which Tsai did years of research on to improve medical masks, are made of individual fibers or filaments that are bound together mechanically, thermally or chemically. They are not knit or woven together, like most cotton.

Not all nonwoven fabrics are ideal for masks. Wet wipes are made of nonwoven fabric but are too porous, Tsai said. Vacuum bags are also generally made of nonwoven fabric but are not breathable.Tsai recommended using car shop towels as mask material. The towels, available in rolls and often blue in color, would do a better job of filtering droplets than cloth, he said. The material is “very strong,” he said. “And it can be washed with soap and water and reused.” There are YouTube videos that offer tutorials on using this material.

The towels, he said, could also be used in conjunction with cloth masks, serving as an additional filtering layer. Still, like MacIntyre, he said that cloth is better than nothing. “Any cloth material can help. It is not perfect, but it can stop large droplets from getting out, and from getting in,” he said. . . .

well I'm trying to look at the bright side of things

saving money

--- pretty sure that trip to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks in June is gone 85 % or more

--- pretty sure that the trip to San Francisco in late July is gone

------- the three ballgames Cubs vs. Giants won't be played 75 - 85 %

other activities 60 %

so money saved :(

we can hope the crisis is over quickly

and of course it takes time to do scientific studies right

I had a friend in college who was the victim of a drug used in the US without proper testing it was given to women during pregnancy and was more common in Europe

she only had arms, one cut off about 3 inches from the shoulder, the other at the elbow and no legs

she was one of the smartest persons I have ever met

after those reactions to the drug were known, the feds changed their rules requiring testing before allowing drugs to be used here in the US

as I understand it, usage of the drug for prescribed purposes, you are correct

for this new use against the virus that is yet to be determined scientifically by any source as far as I know

oh, trust me

I do independent research I am a " seeker of knowledge " after all

and I take what I find with, as they say, a Large grain of salt

I use wiki as a general source and try to go onto more specific sources if I can

of course it is always hard to determine what weight to give to sources especially when one is not particularly knowledgeable in the field being researched

just heard on a news source that the Montana N G are screening visitors

here is more info

QuoteQuote:

BILLINGS, Mont. — The National Guard will start screening people who arrive in Montana by airplane or train beginning Friday to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Officials say 73 Guardsmen will be deployed to 17 locations in 11 cities.

Guard members will be at airports in Billings, Butte, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell and Missoula and at train stations in Whitefish, Havre, Shelby and Wolf Point.

Guard members will be taking the temperatures of arriving passengers, notifying them of the state's 14-day self-quarantine for non-work-related visits and referring anyone with a fever to medical personnel. . . .

no inspection if someone just drives across the border and the effort is useless if the visitor is asymptomatic at the time

good pr perhaps

effective I have my doubts

sorry to rain on the parade but those drugs have yet to be proven scientifically as far as I know effective against preventing or abating or curing the infection

there are studies and trials currently underway but as of now, as far as I know, the only thing we know for certain is that there are now shortages of hydroxychloroquin for those who need them for the current prescribed usage and thus those individuals are suffering

I am not sure if that is because of the studies or hoarding or a combination of both

as far as myself, despite being in the class of individuals most at risk - age and preexisting conditions, I intend on leaving the house to do walks outside, do photography, depending on the weather

I will go to stores as necessary

in order to help others, although I am not convinced it will protect me, I will wear gloves and a mask when I expect to meet others

at all times when I am outside of my home, I will maintain " social distancing " practices

POssible coronavirus drug identified by Australian scientists
MONASH UNIVERSITY

Australian Scientists have shown that an anti-parasitic drug already available around the world can kill the virus within 48 hours.
Scientists from Monash University in Melbourne showed that a single dose of the drug, Ivermectin, could stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture - effectively eradicating all genetic material of the virus within 48 hours.
The next steps are to determine the correct human dosage - ensuring the doses shown to effectively treat the virus in the test tube are safe levels for humans.
The use of Ivermectin to combat COVID-19 depends on pre-clinical testing and clinical trials, with funding urgently required to progress the work.
Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has also been shown to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses including HIV, Dengue, Influenza and Zika virus.
The findings of the study were published today in Antiviral Research.. . .

my dad taught us that you didn't make mistakes you had " learning experiences " and you were not dumb enough to repeat them

- I remember as a child camping at a small lake when my dad borrowed a canoe with a small outboard motor mounted on the side

someone came running up the hill yelling to my mom " John's in the water, John's in the water "

Mom - " what he is doing "

person - " yelling "

Mom - " are there other boats near him "

person " yes "

mom carried on with what she was doing

Dad comes walking up the hill, dripping wet and starts to try to dry out his wallet

Mom " what happened "

Dad " I tried to start the motor and went into the water "

Mom - " once "

Dad - " three times "

hoping for some local sharing

Stormont Vail Health shared its first COVID-19 scorecard Thursday evening, which indicated the health system is dangerously low on N95 respirator masks.

According to the scorecard, Stormont has been close to experiencing a shortage of those respirator masks since at least March 27. The hospital is also reporting that as of Thursday, its surgical mask supply is starting to dip.

Stormont is an example of what appears to be a national shortage of personal protective equipment for health care workers, as gear designed to protect doctors and nurses from potentially contracting COVID-19 hasn’t been available in the amounts needed.
. . .

Topeka’s other two hospitals — The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus and the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center — have not reported a shortage of masks. Stormont appears to be treating the most patients locally for the coronavirus.

According to Nancy Burkhardt, director of marketing and communications for St. Francis, the hospital’s supply of respirator masks is adequate to meet the current usage rate.

“We continue to monitor supplies on a daily basis,” Burkhardt said. “We are fortunate to be part of a larger system that can help us source additional supplies.”

Joseph Burks, chief of communications and public relations for the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System, said the VA medical center in Topeka is equipped with the items necessary to handle COVID-19 cases.

“The Topeka VA Medical Center is following all (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines for the use of masks and protective equipment,” Burks said. “Based on CDC protocols, all employees have the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. ... N95 masks are used when necessary.”

None of Topeka’s hospitals have disclosed the exact number of N95 respirator masks they have on hand, so it is unclear how the supply of respirator masks at St. Francis and the VA medical center stack up to the limited supply at Stormont Vail.
