I'm thinking of selling all my Pentax stuff and moving elsewhere.

Is it? I honestly have no idea  I mean, any meathead (like me) can push the exposure slider in their PP program of choice, whereas in film developing there are more variables and greater skill required of the user.

It's called "ISO invariance" and it is a real thing.

Can't comment further without knowing the context of Tony's statement.

Pretty much every issue you have raised in this post has been discussed elsewhere on the forum. The claim "Pentax seems not interested in introducing really new stuff" is factually incorrect, as they have released "new stuff", albeit slowly, and that "new stuff" is arguably best-in-class... they have also released a re-formulated old favorite, have a high-end portrait lens on the way, and a photographer with close ties to Pentax has indicated we should expect a new APS-C flagship next year (of course just a rumor).

I could go on, but again, information is available on this forum for those who seek it out.

Thanks, but I think a plane ticket from Oz to the USA would cost more than the lens. :D

I use an old (free) Velbon Videomate tripod... since what I shoot is generally moving - or fidgeting - I usually have to keep the shutter speed up a bit, so I don't need the ultimate rock-steady tripod.

It's a challenging lens to use for sure, but when you get it right there is certainly a feeling of accomplishment.

IRIX 150 macro vs D-FA 100 WR macro ?
Posted By luftfluss

I wouldn't say that "macro and af is soo looked down on", it's simply that many of us find that focusing manually* is better for precise focusing on tiny subjects. I actually impress myself with being able to make such minute movements to obtain the focus point I desire.

Also, sometimes the AF noise - or maybe it's the sudden focusing motion of the lens - disturbs said subject.

And sometimes my method is completely different. There are times I'll hold the camera at arm's length and compose through the LCD and use an AF lens that's capable of close focus... because I feel at the time that is the best (or only) way for me to get the shot.

The important thing is to find methods that work for you. I try not only to control my own equipment and technique, but to consider my (usually mobile) subjects, learn what they are willing to tolerate and how best to work with them.

* I'm in agreement with @stevebrot in that I find it easier to move the full kit rather than turn the focus ring as I approach 1:1 magnification.

This is an excellent point. According to the Lens Database, the MFD of the Pentax is 30 cm and the Irix is 34 cm.

This isn't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, but Lenstip has reviewed both lenses and in their experience the Pentax is somewhat sharper wide open.

Many people over the last few years have decided that conventional social media - Facebook, Twitter, IG, etc - stinks and have left it. And many younger folks prefer social media that is more ephemeral in nature.

I just don't see enthusiast-driven product-based forums like PF going away in the foreseeable future.

Funnily enough, the Sony A7II has frequently been panned for poor ergonomics, and yet to you it feels "like a Pentax", a brand that has long been cited for providing excellent ergonomics.

Taste is a strange thing.

300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

Oh sure, the K 500/4.5 is a CA monster, but its surprisingly sharp performance at very long distance - better than the Tamron Adaptall 400/4 65B, which has a more complex optical formula and ED glass - in addition to the commentary by @Chris_Mak simply had me musing on the very large lens/very long performance correlation. Obviously there's a very small sample size at play, but I do find it interesting.

300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

I'm find this and your commentary in a previous post very interesting. Do you feel that the DA 560 excels at long distance shooting because it is somewhat of a telescope design? How far is "long distance"?

I recently acquired an old SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5 which is very large and obviously there was no attempt by the lens designers to make it compact in any way, and while futzing around with it I shot trees at least 300m distant and I was surprised at how decently sharp it rendered the foliage. Perhaps a degradation of distant quality is the price to be paid for more compact tele lens design?

Thanks, guys.

I'm not dedicated enough for focus stacking, I fear :o

The 52BB + Raynox DCR-150 gives me a little better than 1:1 magnification. Because of a little wonkiness with my PKA adapter, when the aperture is set in-camera to f/16 the resultant aperture established by the lens is actually f/13.

My goal in terms of image usability is to have a good-quality photo that displays 2560 pixels on the long side - my recently-deceased Android tablet had a display of 2560x1600, and I decided that the 2560 would be my resolution of choice for jpeg files I upload to Google Photos. If the image happens to be mostly square - like the lady bug pic above - I'll go 1600 pixels on the short side. So as long as I do my job as the photographer the Pentax camera and 52BB allow me considerable room for cropping. The lady bug, hoverfly, and robber fly are crops, while the orchard spider* is the full frame.

* The orchard spider photo is upside-down. When I photographed it, I was prone on the inclined ground and shot upwards maybe 30. I flipped the image horizontally during PP, hence it appears illuminated from underneath.

** During my backyard and backyard-adjacent excursions, I tote a lightweight resin stool with me. This allows me to sit comfortably, rest my elbows on my knees, and focus by moving the camera with a surprising (to me) degree of precision.
