More full-frame smoke, but still no fire, this time from photographyblog

No idea how you arrived at that weird conclusion from what I said. I am a Pentax user, I'm not arguing with anyone. I'm just saying making lenses as small as possible (DA 40 XS) seems like a wasted effort when the body is the main size factor.

This is what I find frustrating. If size was my main concern, I'd go mirrorless. As it is, Pentax seem to focus on shaving 1cm off the lens depth, when the body is always going to be much bulkier than any mirrorless. And with the Pentax, you have an optical viewfinder, so f/3.2 gives you a darker image, whereas on the Fuji's EVF would compensate for the slower lens. People always overlook the benefits of a bright viewfinder and assume everyone just wants a fast lens to get narrow depth of field.

The FA 43 and FA 77 are both compact enough for me.

Pentax forum questions for Ricoh at Photokina

I mentioned this to a Ricoh rep the other day. The 43mm on my MZ-S was the only lens I needed, but on a cropped sensor it's a useless 65mm. When they launched the 43, they went on about how it was the "ideal" focal length... If they believe that, why is there no fast 29mm DA Limited for crop sensors? The only reason I still have the 43 is in the hope it will one day live its full life again on a FF body. Yes a FF body will be big - fine, I have m43 for when size matters.

I tried a K-S1 at my local dealer and thought the mode wheel quite good for the target user, but not for me as I like to have two dials.
The 4-way buttons inside the dial were fiddly and felt cheap and I didn't care for the grip which was small and uncomfortable. But the menus work well with the mode dial.

That's the *only* reason I want a FF Pentax - to use my 43mm and 31mm as I used them on my MZ-3. Multiply them by 1.5 and they lose all their magic. If there were fast (rather than slow pancake) DA Limiteds, I'd switch in a shot, but a 21/3.2 on crop sensor can't be compared with a 31/1.8on a 35mm frame.

Funnily enough, when I mentioned this to a Pentax Pro dealer, he (a Nikon semi-pro shooter) said the only thing keeping him from switching from Nikon full frame to Pentax APS-C was his investment in Nikon big glass.

Pentax K-3 Prestige Edition Announced

Looks nice, but also looks desperate. And their marketing still sucks.

The name is awful. Very cheesy. In the UK, Prestige = kitchen appliances.

Saw the tweets on my mobile and followed the links. The Ricoh Imaging website says nothing whatsoever about the model, just a copy and paste of the regular K3 page, with different pictures. The UK tweet links to the website that doesn't even mention it.

And you've compared results for the two lenses in order to draw your conclusions? Or just the spec sheet?

$799 is a very good price. $1,099 is a realistic price.

Worked for me until I traded my MZ-S for a K10D, then the magical 43mm became a weird 65mm and got consigned to the cupboard.

But the Sony A-mount is just the old Minolta AF mount, right? Like the K-mount, designed to cover 35mm film. Or don't Minolta AF lenses work with SR on a Sony SLR?

Waist-level finders are already commonplace, they're called tilt screens. Honestly, a decent non-glare, high brightness LCD screen in a horizontal position is better than a washed out, back-to-front image on a ground glass screen. Even the tiny Olympus E-PL3 screen makes a fantastic waist-level finder.

Please remember when forming opinions of value that there is a whole world outside the USA. The UK list price for the IIs is 150 more than the II. That's about $240 or, to put it another way, not a bargain.

I'm really not at all bothered about pixel densities, dynamic range or whatever of APS-C vs 35mm frame sizes; every DSLR these days is better than my last DSLR, which was better than the one before that. Too many people get caught up in pixel-peeping debates. All I want is to be able to use my 31mm as a 31 and my 43mm as a 43 and enjoy taking photos that people buy. No one has ever complained about image quality.

I can live with my K-7 for sure, but I do think Pentax have a very grim future if they don't release a full frame dSLR in the next 6 months. Canon, Nikon and Sony are defining the market, and the market isn't driven by the minority who hang out on forums debating 'IQ' of 100% crops of brick walls. The market is still very much driven by the spec sheet and brand image. A friend of mine recently 'got into' photography and would consider nothing other than Canon and Nikon. He doesn't even know what an EV is and yet he was adamant that he wanted a brand he sees pros using, a camera with 8 fps for shooting landscapes, a big camera so that people will think he has a better camera than them.

All my talk of Limited lenses, weather sealing, Hyper Manual... wasn't of interest compared to brand and spec sheet. That's the mainstream consumer - the one who couldn't care less about pixel densities - the one who thinks "that's a brand I know and respect, that one has a bigger sensor, so it's better, I'll take that one".

I fear Pentax will try to ignore the direction the market is going and end up like Kodak or Nokia.

Also not true. An entry level 2012 Ford Mondeo has way more features than a 1990 Ford Mondeo. Features always trickle down the model range, so you have to compare features with equivalent models from the competition.

Branding announcement: Pentax for ILC, Ricoh for Compacts

I disagree. To the man in the street, Pentax and Ricoh are equally meaningless in a world of Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony,. To the enthusiast, Pentax have made a mountain of mediocre compacts and a couple of decent rugged ones. On the other hand, Ricoh have a history of highly regarded premium compacts, all with very well received user interfaces.

Makes total sense IMO.

Consistent body designs

The K-7, K-5 and K-r all had a consistent look about them - and a good look at that. The K-01 is perhaps to Pentax what the stupid new Beetle is to VW; a K-5 (or Golf) in an embarrassing outfit. The K-30 doesn't look anything like a K-r or K-5 which I think is an unwise move. The look of a Canon or Nikon is quite distinctive (and yet somehow bland) and helps build the brand identity as much as the big logo on the camera strap.

I think it looks like it's been punched in the face and that material with the pinpricks in it looks like it's from a 1985 Ford Sierra.
