Not packing lightly for the solar eclipse

My son & I had 3 shipping trunks full with telescopes, cameras etc plus chairs etc for the 2017 US eclipse. Thankfully we remembered gaffer tape, duck tape, and our eye ware! Some others in our group forgot key components, and we all shared out as needed. Oh yes, we overpacked and will be less encumbered next time! The views were wondrous and will never be forgotten! Hangin’ with the crowd of watchers was priceless too!

55-300 PLM and 1.4x aw rear converter metering incorrect

From the in-depth specs review: “The following lenses are not supported according to Pentax; using these lenses with the converter will damage the lens or converter:
SMC Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited
HD Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited
SMC Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited
HD Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited
SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS

All other current lenses (as of March 2014) can be used with these caveats:
SMC Pentax-DA* 55mm F1.4: The largest usable aperture with converter is F2.4 (the same holds for the F and FA 50mm F1.4 lenses as per our tests)
MC Pentax-DA 17-70mm F4: Contrast detect AF is unreliable, use phase detect
HD Pentax-DA 560mm F5.6: phase detect autofocus may be unreliable, use contrast detect
SMC and HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8: phase detect autofocus may be unreliable when zoomed in, use contrast detect”

I have same lens & TC but never use them together, yet. Suggestions: check KP firmware version and update if needed. Possibly do a factory reset of default settings for “P” mode and retest.

I agree that nearly every maker has some stars and some not. I share your experience with 1 Zeiss 80mm Planar, but still use my Hasselblads with other fave lenses, like the 60mm CB! Amazing lens! Everyone has different perceptions and favorite lenses. My original 75mm f4.5 Tak is still fun despite being very old. Variety is the spice etc!

Adobe announced PS for iPad Pro recently! I use one for much of my post processing and am delighted so far! That said, I have an iMac and ASUS i7 laptop for current Photoshop and heavy astrophotography and other special needs. The more I use the iPad Pro, the less I need the others; and I don’t do commercial projects anymore-retired. Just my 2cents. :-)

I agree with Cipher on the 45mm, but I would have to agonize over the decision to not pick the 90mm f2.8! Twice as useful for me! LOL!

Kodak HC-110 & Ilford HC

Kodak HC-110 is an iconic, unequaled (imo) developer with a dozen+ variations, depending on the cook in charge. There are many other HC developers, but HC110 is kind of the “Gold” standard. Dozens of recipes and help sections exist for it. The concentrate lasts a long time, if needed. I remember when a small bottle was several dollars but made gallons of Tri-X mix for me. I can almost smell it,aahhhh! :-)

Pentax DA* 60-250mm F4 should I use one for a night baseball game ?

I like Coors Field for baseball and it’s a fun venue! The 55~300mm PLM zoom would be sufficient & convenient, even if it rains/snows. Great street opportunities nearby, too.

Revisiting the DA* 60-250?

I have some health limitations currently that caused me to investigate M43 and the Olympus line specifically. I still use Pentax, but the M43 Olympus Pen-f and Zuiko Pro lenses are exceptional, for me. Nearly all the Zuiko Pro level lenses’ sweet spots are f2.8-f4. I’ve rented several and been duly impressed. When I can, I still bag up my P67ii kit and tripod plus K3ii and a couple “cannons” and head out on safari! :-) All the stats and anecdotal testimonies don’t change physics, but I do photography for fun now.

Sandy, your first two sentences say a lot! What has really changed; or is this likely a GAS attack? For your KP, the DA PLM 55-300mm really rocks for value, weight etc. It can work on your K1 as well. Otherwise, a heretical thought: Olympus Zuiko 45-150 f2.8 Pro w/ EM1 body! Lol!

Assuming all shutters work: Use smartphone as a light meter with an app. Choose the K1000 and forget the internal meter. From there it’s learn a few basics and “kiss” the process. An all manual flow will help you visualize and capture the moment instead of “spraying & praying” lots of shots. Have some fun!

Pentax, a forgotten camera brand

It’s business. Global market share for digital cameras continues to shrink under the crush of technologies designed to replace them. Serious photographers are also a shrinking market, imho. All camera & lens makers are feeling the pain. You and I care because we are engaged in this activity, but a few billion others have their phones, and that is all they feel they need...for now.

three leg add on for support of monopod

Probably an expensive idea for your challenge: some of the newer generation, major brands, tripods offer a leg as a monopod. I bought a small travel Mefoto tripod with a detachable monopod. For my smaller travel kit, it works fine-fills both needs. If your camera & lens weights are significant, a bigger tripod with detachable leg/monopod may be a solution(?). When I am on a local “safari” both my heavy old Gitzo tripod and separate Gitzo monopod go with me as the tasks vary and the cameras & lenses move as needed.

Suggestions: surf Amazon books looking for camera repair. Lots of choices, including Kindle based and used books (inexpensive) pop up. I have some of these oldies ... now where did I put them? The gist is that many of these how-to gems have tool lists in their appendices. You could also check your local library, college library etc, for possible available manuals. Also some manufacturers produced repair manuals; usually expensive; but are in used venues and online PDFs. Good luck.

Rectilinear vs “super-wide” can be unique labels for lenses. I got the 14mm version for similar reasons as yourself, but quickly discovered differences & qualities depending on K3 vs MZs vs adapted M43. How cool, huh? Tips for using super-wides will help you. Post processing can clean up some distortion. .... years ago, a different 20mm Vivitar analog era taught me how to shoot with them. Pointing higher on subjects usually added distortion. Subjects nearer lens periphery were less sharp etc. Then a friend shared a similar aperture, costly rectilinear lens with me, and the eureka moment happened!! I have been GASsy ever since! You may want to try your lens in APSC mode focusing on lens center area. Kudos to biz-engineer-good info! I agree! Humorous observation; astronomical objects vs pointy castles are in different photographic universes. You may not see geometric distortion shooting far away, tiny objects vs huge, towering nearby ones. Sorry for my rambling- need coffee! Good luck!

“Hello! I am a beginner and I have a Pentax mz-5n with a 28mm FA and I wanted to buy a 50mm, do you know which lenses are compatible with this camera model?”

Welcome! Hi! Most K-Mount & Kaf (autofocus) lenses will work - similar to your 28mm FA lens. I recommend the 50mm FA 1.4 or the F 1.7 editions. Spend a few dollars adding a lens hood. Use the Pentax forum database references for specific camera & lens information and tips!

Fwiw, I use the 45mm f/4, latest edition, and really have no cons to express. It’s a bit wider view than the 55mm, which I seriously considered, but have no regrets with the 45mm...and the lens hood. No rattles; just smooth ‘n’ sharp! I added some filters and have stayed with this a long time.

Here’s Jeff Zelinka’s updated Skyguider setup link:

I am just guessing & offering a thought: on my Vixen GP Mount, The counterweight & telescope needed to be horizontal to view thru alignment scope. If vertical, the alignment scope channel was blocked. Otherwise, I am clueless! But interested in the outcome and would like to learn more.

I am delighted with mine, but it only covers about 75% of my general needs. The more I use it, the better the value. You may want to commit to it or not... That money can buy some nice concert tickets or a set of tires for the car! ;-)
