Pentax, autofocus and the future

Fast and accurate focus isn't just about sports. On the contrary, I believe it is part and parcel of the 35mm SLR legacy. HCB certainly didn't have the advantage of auto focus so he had to work within the constraints of his era's technology and the techniques of the day. Our era of technology and techniques of the today include fast, accurate, auto focus. Unless you're a Pentax owner and that makes no sense to me.

I'm certainly no HCB but "The Decisive Moment" was one of the reasons I took up photography in my teens, well before auto focus, digital or otherwise. Whether it's the light, someone's reaction to "the moment" , or the that first crack as the bat contacts the ball and breaks, a camera needs to be ready and I don't feel that Pentax's auto focus capabilities are ready for "the moment". They may never be. Hopefully when the time comes that I can afford and upgrade it will be within the Pentax brand but after years of waiting for the auto focus to meet modern standards

My kit certainly works for me a good bit of the time but it limits what I can do, many moments have fleeted with the only evidence being a shot of "the moment missed".

A lot of unsettling delays culminated in taking the car instead of the bike. A bit disappointed but I made up for it by bringing my APSC kit as well.

The Q kit, however, is allowing me to take a complete "system" on longer hikes that would have turned what's supposed to be fun into a chore with a similar APSC or FF kit. The new lens is working out great, also. Pix soon.

Copy polarizers and a hood for the 08. I wondered about the toy lenses but I am a fan of in-camera effects and I kinda see the toy lenses as in-camera low-fi effects lenses. It certainly would be easy to do low-fi in LR or Ps but the toy lenses are so tiny...

BTW, where is that?

---------- Post added 07-18-16 at 23:50 ----------

Didn't realize the 08 is a 49mm filter thread (it's new) and never thought about a close up filter for the 02. Nice. Any suggestions for a close up filter?

It's been awhile since I posted. Work. Looong hours.

Now, however, the show is done and I'm taking a multi-week trip to make 10 months of having no life worth it. It is perhaps a once in a lifetime motorcycle camping trip (with the occasional route 66 style motel stay). I'll ride north from Los Angeles, up the U.S. west coast, then east a bit to to visit our National Parks. I'll travel to Redwood first, inland a bit to Crater, back to the coast and up to Olympic, over to Glacier, then down to Yellowstone. I'm 53 and it's unlikely I'll be doing it again.

I want to document the trip for my honorary nephew who gets "that look in his eye" whenever I visit on a motorbike; he's going to end up a motorcyclist at some point. He asked me to GoPro the ride so I decided to do so in the hopes of inspiring him to travel the U.S. like I have; safely and with an emphasis on following the path of one's nature.

I feel the 08 lens is integral to following the path of my nature...

Well, about the 08 lens's relationship to Taoism anyway.

The only lens in the "system" I didn't have was the 08. Like many, the price has always put me off but today I found a Pentax dealer lens for $250.00. It checked out in perfect condition, like new, just no back cap. The 08 completes my native Q system and, as many have stated in the past, It's extraordinarily compact for a "complete system". It's like it was made for traveling on a motorbike; I'm truly gobsmacked. I've read about others here who were very satisfied having taken a Q series on their trips and I've all but decided to take the Q7 for digital capture on mine. So...

Full Pentax Q system for a once in a lifetime motorbike trip? Opinions?

FYI, I'm also taking two film cameras and shooting Tri-X for shots I'll want to have negatives of. They were easy choices, an MX with several lenses in the bag for more considered shots and an Olympus XA always in my pocket for snapshots.

You've just described autofocus. ;)

Seriously, I agree the lens/body combo is what needs to be evaluated, not just the body. I sort of thought that would go without saying. Putting a fast focusing $5000.00 lens on $400.00 not so fast focusing body is lunacy.

I've always been under the impression that if one shoots sport seriously Canikon is still the only option. Pentax AF has never been improved to the point that it is equal to its rivals. I've been out of the loop for a few months but I imagine not much has changed in the past year.

David Bowie Dies

I had very very few "childhood heroes". During a very difficult adolescence he was one of those few. He made being an outsider easier throughout it all. To so many such outsiders David Bowie was a hero, not "just for one day", but for a lifetime. RIP.

---------- Post added 01-12-16 at 20:50 ----------

I picked up a new bass from Sam Ash this evening. David Bowie came up in conversation. None of the guys there had seen the video for "Blackstar" so I told them what an extraordinary piece of work it is.

I left the store, got in my car, and as I was pulling out one of the guys opened the front door of the store and I could hear Blackstar playing loud and clear into the street as I drove away. Lovely.

It was a brand new 1981 Suzuki GS450S and I was a junior in high school who had developed a notorious reputation between my freshman and sophomore years. Ironically, by the time I got the motorcycle (and after a semester "off") I had actually turned a corner and was behaving myself; even got to date the head cheerleader for a nanosecond.

Although I had made friends, especially during my freshman year, I had never been really "popular" in high school. Becoming notoriously well known for bad behaviour isn't exactly the same as being popular; sort of completely different actually. My turn around from genuine "bad boy" to motorcycle riding "good kid" went over well with admin. It went over equally well with the student body and did wonders for my social life.

Riding up to the local hangouts on the weekend usually ended with with me riding away with a lovely passenger behind me, much to the consternation of the parents who discovered their daughter had ridden on the back of a motorcycle that weekend. It was rare though that any parent's displeasure lasted after proper introductions were made. It usually ended with some sort of, " don't do anything crazy with my daughter on the back", admonitions and once even a, "you can borrow my car next time", deal from the dad. I was much more charming in my youth. :) There were, of course, a few, "don't ever go near my daughter again", moments that I couldn't charm my way out of. :(

I've been riding motorcycles ever since; 36 years. Sigh...

I don't have any pix of my GS450S but this is one I found on the web. She was a beauty.

This fits my Q and Q7 body and all the Q lenes I own (I own everything except the crazy expensive wide zoom). Doesn't look too "camera bag" and is compact. I got it from ebags and added a small Crumpler insert. Works a treat.

... I had to switch to manual focus using the 02 zoom at it's widest. In auto focus mode I could change my POV from the distant horizon to something close (my shadow below me) and it would fire. The red square wouldn't turn green when pointed to the horizon.

Any ideas?

Although I love the size of the MX, the KX is in some ways slightly more versatile due to the 6400 ASA setting, a two stop advantage over the MX.

There are also good reasons to consider the MX, however, since can use interchangeable focusing screens, has 2% more VF coverage, and some might say the GPD metering is better. There is also an auto-winder available that, when attached, makes the MX about the same size the KX.

As usual, horses for courses. I have both and if I want to push TriX over 1600 I'll take out the KX. If I want to pack smaller and not take a rangefinder or want to be able to shoot quick single frames I'll take the MX with the winder.

Don't underestimate the winder, I bought mine after missing the opportunity to get a few extra shots of a rare exotic motorbike when the owner briefly stopped for me as he was leaving an event. It was indeed a brief moment and I would not have had any problems firing off a few extra frames under those circumstances if I'd had the auto winder then. As it was, I only got about three shots off.

I do like the more relaxed and considered approach film lends itself to but there are those occasions, even shooting film, when a rapid fire approach is preferable and the split second it takes to manually advance film can mean a missed opportunity. That motorbike will not be seen again for a long while.
