Shutter shock with small primes

I think the solution is to use TAv mode or the electronic shutter.

When I am shooting landscapes, I use the ES almost exclusively, at least when on a tripod.

Much of it really comes down to your tolerance of EVFs. Personally, I don't do well with them for any length of time (headaches/eye strain issues) and so all of the benefits in the world from going mirrorless don't do too much to change my mind.

I guess if you buy the 6D II you get the adapter free as well. In fact all of your EOS lenses work without messing with an adapter.

Yes. But even there, how much difference in price is there between an old 36 megapixel sensor, a somewhat newer 42 megapixel sensor and the newest 61 megapixel sensor -- both in terms of cost to produce and actual pricing to camera makers?

I would have thought that at least initially, new sensors would have a higher cost as they add more PDAF points on the sensor and go to a smaller pixel. I suppose the question isn't what it costs for Sony to manufacture a new sensor, but what they are charging competitors to use it.

And isn't problematic to have more and more PDAF points on the sensor? I have seen the banding that this can produce and it isn't pretty.

Hoping for a Pixel Shift Upgrade...

I guess the question is what you do when you are capturing more color detail. With pixel shift you should get something more like a Foveon level of color information. Sigma says that the SD 14 sensor has 14 megapixels when the reality is that it has 4.7 megapixels for each color. The end result is something better than 5 megapixels, but not as good as 14 megapixels either.

With pixel shift, you definitely get extra resolution and comparing images from the Canon 5Ds to a K-1 pixel shift, you find that the pixel shift images seem to have more detail in them, even though they have fewer megapixels.

I'm not totally sure how much of an advantage that Sony really has. They definitely turn out more (and sometimes better) sensors than anyone else and then their ILC department feels obligated to build a camera for every one of them, but I think the biggest advantage Sony has is that many of its customers believe strongly in the Sony propaganda -- somewhat similar to how Fuji users believe that X Trans sensors are intrinsically better than Bayer sensors.

It's nice to have a base of customers who will buy whatever new thing you turn out. That's the sort of advantage that most brands would love to have.

Who cares about launch price? Overall the camera market has dropped considerably and that has pushed the price of both MILCs and DSLRs down. Currently the price is the same and is likely to remain the same. The mirror costs nothing extra at this point, although your post strongly implied that at current prices the mirrored camera cost 700 dollars more.

What is odd is not that Canon launched the 6D II at 1900 dollars (which is what entry level full frame cameras were selling for then), but that the market has tanked to the point that a couple of years later they had to launch a MILC with similar tech at a price significantly under that. Usually there is more of an early adopter tax.

If you would get a K-1, I would recommend the FA 135 f2.8. It is a sharp, small sized prime that gives really nice results. It may be a little long for some situations, but it does give nice subject isolation.

What are you talking about? The 6D II is 1299 on B and H right now and the RP is exactly the same price, 1299. So no, there is no difference in price.

Overall, Sony does well, but I feel like their innovations are more on the sensor side of things than the ILC design side. They do seem to be pretty effective at copying other's innovations and tweaking them. They had Pentax's pixel shift (4 shots) but it couldn't be developed in camera, had to be processed in post. Now they are coming out with a 16 shot version -- maybe a little closer to Olympus's version. Regardless, I don't see that it is innovative. The only innovative thing about it is that they are doing it with a 61 megapixel sensor.

There are always a few wealthy photographers/top end photographers who have to have the best no matter what the cost. But if this camera sells on the level of most medium format cameras it will be a loss for Sony.

Eye AF for animals is definitely the feature that Pentaxians are waiting for.

I don't know how to explain what I am saying better. If Sony had released the A7r IV in a vacuum it would be a great camera. But they didn't. They released it in a situation where there are already 40 to 50 megapixel cameras on the market, many of which have excellent auto focus capabilities, 4K video and even pixel shift. And most of what Sony could think of to add was extra megapixels and an extra 12 frames in pixel shift mode. It all just feels like they don't know where else to go, but they have to keep releasing cameras at a high pace, even if they don't really have much to really improve over past iterations of their cameras.

K1 with pixel shift gives excellent quality, but it certainly isn't going to get you to medium format level, except maybe with the DFA *50. Medium Format is about the lenses as much as anything.

Mirrorless "adds" features because it tends to be released with beta software that isn't completed. You can't add 4K video after the fact if the sensor isn't capable of it.

I don't think 16 shots will be much use for real world situations except for product shots and maybe architecture as even on still days there is some movement. But I suppose we will see.

It is quite different. The whole point of Pentax's pixel shift is to increase color depth and decrease noise while keeping a 36 megapixel image. I don't believe that the 61 megapixels is going to give improved color depth, decreased noise or improved dynamic range. At best it is going to give a hair more resolution (see Canon 5D IV versus 5Ds), possibly with an actual loss of dynamic range.

But as has been said elsewhere this will probably be a boon to birders and wildlife photographers.

I'm not sure why you keep bringing up the K-1 II. It really is a very different situation. As far as I can tell Sony hasn't offered to upgrade anyone's A7R III to an A7R IV. Obviously the K-1 to K-1 II was a more minor upgrade, but one that did require some updating of hardware. I thought it was nice that Pentax offered such a program.

I bought a K-1 for 1700 dollars so even if I had upgraded it wouldn't have been as much as you said. In fact I did buy a K-1 II to add to my K-1, but if I sold my K-1 I could have gotten 1200 dollars for it easily and then purchased a K-1 II for 1700. That is 500 dollars for a new camera. A lot of people chose to go that way, although plenty went the upgrade path.

Regardless, I just think we are getting to the end of "useful" upgrades. You can always add things. If you want to go to cell phone pixel pitch you can probably get to 100 megapixels on a full frame sensor -- maybe more. You certainly can get even higher frame rates and number of AF points on the sensor, but eventually things are just "good enough." And sometimes pushing the megapixels up too high actually hurts still image quality, which is what I am truly interested in.

People are pulling out pretty specific uses of a camera in this thread. It may be that birding is the most important thing for a camera to be able to do, but if your focus is on birding and the 26 megapixels you get with your crop on this camera, you are going to be cheaper getting a lower megapixel full frame camera to combine with a 24-ish megapixel APS-C camera for when you need that "reach."

But I really think people over estimate how much of a difference there is between a 20 megapixel image (like the D500 has) and a 24 or 26 megapixel image. There isn't a huge difference in real world settings.

Same with the silent mode. Yes, it is nice to have, but the K-1 shutter is soft enough that it isn't a problem in most settings -- certainly less obtrusive than people taking flash photos with their photos.

I guess I think that Sony turns out cameras the way that computer makers turn out computers. There is always something coming that is better in one way or another. Better eye AF or better EVF or better video or higher megapixels are all things that Sony has churned out as reasons to get their shiniest cameras.

The problem is at least partially that when Sony bumps up read out speeds (necessary for better video and faster frame rates) and resolution, dynamic range really seems to suffer. Just as much, I don't think most of these spec monsters speak to folks taking lots of photos, but to gear heads who are chasing the newest and the fastest gear out there.

The phone photo really shows what I haven't liked about them in the past. Greens in particular just don't have a natural hue, whereas the CCD sensor does a very nice job of rendering them very naturally. In addition, as you mentioned, dynamic range seems better on the K200 -- at least the shadow areas are more visible.

Clearly phone cameras have come a long way over time, though (not surprisingly) they haven't caught up with larger sensored cameras.

There is nothing wrong with this camera, but there isn't anything particularly right about it either. It just feels like the end of the line when it comes to useful improvements. You want 40 megapixels, how about 60? You like 4 shot pixel resolution, how about 16? We'll try to improve ergonomics a bit and claim that auto focus is better.

At the same time, image quality isn't really going to be much different -- maybe a hair more resolution compared to older 36 and 42 megapixel models. And I have been told a million times that Sony's current auto focus is awesome or, maybe I should say AWESOME, meaning that I can't really understand why someone shooting an A7 III or A7r 3 is going to want to upgrade. Sony has improved everything and all I can think is "meh."

Since I shoot with Pentax, I can see certain things that Pentax probably does need to do going forward. Maybe a hybrid viewfinder, better video specs, but honestly I would prefer a K1 with better buffer and a little faster frame rate to this nonsense.
