Sounds like the Q line might be perfect for you ~ I just picked up a Q10 as they are being offered so cheaply at the moment. Looking forward to the portability and the fun factor. :)

Thanks Deesquared. :) I posted the final cropped version largely because I'd heard complaints about lack of sharpness, but that was not my experience on my (admittedly short) first few shots. I'll be taking it on a family trip to the coast this weekend, so I'll be anxious to see how it performs.

Wow, those are some really neat shots with the 03 lens! I may have to pick that one up at some point. :)

My Q just arrived today (new user), so I took a walk at lunch and took some test shots. Nothing special, but I was impressed with the quality of the 01 lens with this teeny tiny camera:

Somehow I missed this reply - thanks mole! I stayed at the same place last year, and when I compare the images I captured this time - same camera, same lens - it's really insightful for me to see how much my photography has changed. It makes me wonder what next year will bring. :)

We don't need no stinkin' EVF!

The lenses are honestly what drew me to taking the plunge with the Q10. I want something super small and light for travel, but with at least some of the diversity offered by my DSLR - and I find I really like shooting either prime, or a nice long telephoto. The 06 lens is what really drew me, being so small and light, but with a really terrific range. The LCD and lack of VF was the only thing holding me back, and I really think this thread may have changed all of that for me. :) I just wish I had been able to get a kit that came with the 01 prime instead of the 02 zoom, but I'll wait to pick up the 01 now until I've had a chance to play with the camera and decide if it really is exactly what I've been looking for. I love having a good camera when I'm traveling, but find I only pack it with me on "special" planned days, because the K7 is no light beast to lug around. I'm hoping the Q10 will be my "everywhere, always" camera when I want one. :)

This may actually make all the difference in how I feel about the Q10 I just ordered. :) I briefly had a K-01, but the bulk was really not any different from my K7, but less ergonomic for me to hold, and I hated the lack of EVF because glare constantly made the LCD pretty much useless, so I got rid of it. I've been eyeing the Q for awhile, but worried that I would find the same limitation with the screen. Just ordered one of these, so I can take that out of the equation. Thanks!

Q10 worth picking up?

Thank you everyone for responding and giving me so much to think about. While of course I am tempted by the improvements of the Q7, I decided I would save my money and get a much less expensive Q10 to check out. That way, if I find I really dislike the lack of VF, I won't be out much when/if I turn around and sell it. I found a kit with the red version (which I like!) and 02 and 06 lenses for $348 at a Japanese site called Aoyama and Co. Since the 06 was one of the reasons I was so interested,t his gives me the chance to really try out the camera, and if I sell the Q10 and 02 separately from the 06, I can probably recoup the entire cost, or close to it if the camera just doesn't work for me.

Of course, I am REALLY hoping it does! I really wanted the 01 prime instead of the 02 zoom, but it doesn't seem like the Q's get packaged with this lens. Ah well. Should still give me a pretty good idea. :) Thanks again! I'll post again after I have the camera and try it out.

Q10 worth picking up?

Hmmm. It seems I could pick up a Q7 kit on Amazon that includes both the 02 and 06 lenses for around $500. Considering the 06 all by itself would cost me $279, and then adding the $169 cost of the Q10, I would be better off just getting the Q7 kit...

How is the Q7 an upgrade beyond the larger sensor? Inquiring mind and all...

Q10 worth picking up?

Hello everyone,

I love my K-7 to pieces, with many lens combinations, but I particularly love it with my DA 55-300. However, when we travel, it can be a bulky camera to carry, particularly to our favorite vacation spot, Disneyland, where you ride rides and I have to constantly worry about what to do with it. I briefly had a K-01, but in the end it was no less bulky than my K-7 and I hated the lack of VF. (I realize the Q does not have one either. However, I see lots of mods adding one via the hot shoe).

So, now that the Q has a nice ranged zoom (06), and the Q10 is experiencing a really good price point at the moment, I am giving serious thought to picking it up. I dislike the limitations of P&S cameras, so I love the idea of interchangeable lenses. I wonder, how well do those external VFs people attach work? Does it limit the "pocketability" of the Q? Realize I always have a small crossbody purse with me that I could, I think, slip the Q into when it isn't in use. Likewise, I think the 06 lens is small enough to be carried easily, so I can attach it when I feel the need to get up close and personal with far away things. :)

Thoughts? Advice? Questions to help me decide? After my disappointment with the K-01, I don't want to pull the trigger without asking around.

Hello everyone,

I visited the coast a couple of days ago, and was lucky enough to have some really great weather, and even better view off the balcony of our room. I had a lot of fun playing with the range on my DA 55-300. I only wish the whales would have breached the surface of the water enough to photograph. All we saw were spouts and the occasional dark grey line cutting across the surface. I had to make do with the pelicans who were fishing. :)

Sharpness of the K01 + 40xs lens

I am having the same issues, shooting in jpeg. Here are some random test shots, basically just trying to get the right focus, only thing done to them is resize for posting:

This one was with the 15mm limited, and its the sharpest of the bunch:

All the rest are with the 40mm:

The closer the subject, the better in focus the 40mm seems. I will say this - none of these were taken in the best light, and the camera performs in those circumstances much better than my K7. Also, I really am finding myself a little bit in love with the color the K-01+40mm produces. That last shot of the rib roast is an example of what I mean. The colors just seem more vibrant and sharp than anything my K7 has done. Now, if only I could fix the focusing issues I'm having! It's also really frustrating that the little square focuses where it thinks you want it to, rather than where you want it to. I probably took a dozen shots of Dad on Thanksgiving, and it kept wanting to focus on his arm or the chair, rather than on him. Very frustrating, seems a recipe for missing a lot of shots.

Ordered mine from Amazon last night...

I've been waiting patiently to be able to use my Prime shipping, and Amazon finally got one of the K-01's w/40mm XS (black) back in stock last night for the $449 price. I ordered it, and as of this morning they are sold out again (you can get it for $559 from another seller through Amazon).

However, they still have 4 of the body only at $349 in stock as of this writing: Amazon.com: Pentax K-01 16MP APS-C CMOS Compact System Camera [Body] (Black): Camera & Photo

I was kind of hoping for yellow, but they haven't restocked it as yet, and the husband ix-nayed that, saying he did not admire the yellow color (despite being a Bumblebee fan in Transformers. I cannot understand it!) So, basic black it is.

This forum is what finally convinced me to give the K-01 a try. I can see it has quite a following, and I look forward to many discussions and photos long after Pentax has stopped selling "the brick". :)

ETA: Holy moly, it looks like Amazon does have the yellow (w/40mm lens) back in stock, and is selling it for a whopping $899! This is not a third party seller through Amazon, as I thought, but is from Amazon itself. Misprint? Or will the yellow truly become a collector's item?
