Manfrotto under Q mini-tripod $17 @ Amazon

I just got one for my Q-S1. A question to the owners: I couldn't find a way to get the tripod-screw to the center. Crossed out in the Instructions’ image #4. How did you do it? Brute force, dremel?

Edit: I was a coward. Needs more force than I expected. Works like a charm.

Germany:

Lowest: € 599 (Feb 2015) -52.0%
Current: € 949 (since 21 Feb 2015) -24.0% of intro, +58.4% of lowest

Austria:
Introduction € 1,209
Lowest: € 611 (Feb 2015) -49.5%
Current: € 1,199 (since 20 Feb 2015) -0.8% of intro, +96.2 of lowest

Great. Here in Austria we’re practically at the original price – and 41% higher than for the K-3 with € 849 … :(

I think you got it wrong. The German adverb “schnittig” is difficult to translate; maybe sleeky, rakish. So the phrase “schnittige Kameras” should be understand as a commendation! Most commonly it is used in connection with cars (f.i. you can say “ein schnittiger Porsche” but if you say “ein schnittiger Hyundai” you will see puzzled faces). Furthermore, it’s a play of words with the noun “Schnitt” or the verb “schneiden” (cut) – which obviously happened to this nice one. It didn’t simply “come apart”. ;-)

Raw + jpeg versus embedded jpeg

Hi,

see this post:

I extracted embeded JPEGs with ExifTool/ExifToolGUI. From my K-5’s RAWs they are 30-50kB VGA 640×480px JPEG quality 39 (‼), with two 28px black stripes on top and bottom. During review on the LCD, the image is shifted upwards. Therefore, we see a 56px black stripe at the bottom. Only if we zoom into a new preview is created from RAW and the black stripe disappears (i.e., the entire LCD is used).

Yes, we are. Until yesterday I saw 2 (two) Pentax SLRs; an MX in ~1979 (Venice, Italy) and a K-r (Nara, Japan) in 2011. Yesterday I spotted a K-3 (+DA★ 16–50) dangling from the shoulder of a German tourist in my hometown (Vienna, Austria). I said “Hey, a pentaxian! Rare view those days…” With a big grin he replied “What else?”
Pentax is not doomed.

I didn’t say that. I just gave manufacturers listed in the “General Zone” within the Exhibition Hall (F1). Zones should rather be called categories, IMHO. Anyhow, that’s not really important.

Uncripple the K-mount! Forget FF. Built a large format camera (5×8 is boring; ≥8×10)! ;)

Would you mind asking for an uncrippled K-mount? ;)

Out of curiosity I checked the exhibition space. Top fifteen (general zone only):

Code:

 1 Canon, Nikon (13.81% each)

3 Sony ( 9.83%)

4 Olympus ( 9.04%)

5 Fujifilm, Panasonic, Ricoh ( 5.73% each)

8 Casio, Epson, Sigma, Tamron ( 4.90% each)

12 Kenko Tokina / Slik ( 3.95%)

13 Carl Zeiss, GoPro, SD Assoc. ( 1.98% each)

The remaining nineteen account for 6.91%.

I’m still on FW 1.14; does anybody know whether this option was added in v1.15? If not – is there a workaround?

Edit: Well, after some research: Bad luck. It’s not even available in the K-3. Why, the heck?

Which LCD zoom level equates to 100% on the K-5?

I’m too lazy to search, but the consensus was ~8×…

For the K-3 it’s easy because both the sensor (6016×4000) and the LCD (720×480) have an aspect ratio of 3:2. 100% would correspond to a magnification equal to the ratio of the diagonals (7724/865=8.349). Bingo.

The K-5 is a little bit tricky because the sensor (4928×3264) has an aspect ratio of 3:2 and the LCD with VGA 4:3. That’s why we get a 56px black bar on the bottom of the LCD at 1×. Only at higher levels the entire LCD is used. 100% ~5911/800=7.389. So 8× is the closest we can get with the zoom levels supported by the firmware.

k3 interval shooting = great noise reduction

S/N by averaging random noise is expected to improve by the square root of N. Four shots should give a reduction by 2 – or 2.83 for 8.

19 should still give a 54% improvement over 8: 100×(√19/√8–1). In astrophotography stacking many images is not uncommon.

Hi,

you'll find this photo all over the net. The largest size is 1102×620 (e.g., http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6112/rhinodeadpoachedrhino.jpg). I’ve check about twenty sites; no EXIF data, no IPTC, no copyright given. I'm afraid you can’t use it in the public without copyright infringement...
