Whatever variant it is, it will always be super minimal.

It just doesn't need all those libraries that come with a phone or Kindle.

Not yet … :)

You can also focus about 1/3rd into the scene at f11. Crop out the bit nearest the camera if it's not in focus.

Well, as Kunzite says, "and the GR III appears to use an Android/Linux kernel."

Android is of course one of the kinds of embedded Linux, whatever particular one this is based on.

Forum member danielblues has already said he's downloaded the GPL sources from links provided in the official manual.

Anything else you care to contribute to our understanding, Ron? (whistles)

As Broo points out, they've been rehashing the K-3 and the technology inside it for six years now, Swanlefitte, so there's no evidence for that.

The GR III does use some newer tech (it's an Android device, and has a 24Mp sensor) but AF performance is modest and the thing is still priced at premium levels, costing $100 more than its ancestor the GR II did on release.

There have been two Pentax lenses released this year with different strategies, it seems to follow the body positioning dilemma.

The DA*11-18 launched for $1400, with stunning design … and a price way more than any of the APS-C bodies. Almost no Pentaxian will ever own one, let's be honest, it will do nothing for the fortunes of the company.

The FA35 release *was* reasonably priced, but of course it's the same old lens with current coatings, there was no fitting in a focus motor or weather sealing, no extra engineering.

I'm not one of them, mate!

But I'm pretty blasÚ after all these years, it really is a ritual that got upset last time because a girl got fined, I saw her howling outside the front gate when I went home.

The cops' compromise this time round was: 'Fine for all you bohemians, but this is an all-ages event and if any member of the public complains, the arrests are on." :)

It's still a fun day.

I have a bit of a beef with The Age, BTW … Flattering, but ... - PentaxForums.com

Yep, there's no one other than Nikon who could sell a D500 for $1500.

1. They have an economy of scale Pentax can't match … would Nikon sell fifteen times as many cameras as Pentax does worldwide?
2. They've had three years to recover their R&D costs

It has dual CPUs (Pentax have only ever had one) to crunch the calculations the next generation Socionext mainboard (branded 'Expeed 5') needs for all that performance.

The other way is to deliberately choose to make only a smaller profit on it than Nikon- to acquire marketshare. Pentax have already said they will refuse to do this versus Fuji with the next 645, why would they do it in the threatened APS-C sector?

Canon are rumoured to not even make a 7D MkIII, BTW, presumably they want high-end APS-C users to migrate to the EOS R Full Frame mirrorless platform.

All the manufacturers - including Panasonic, belatedly - are following Pentax by going hard for FF.

If the price is low, there's no other way, Broo.

How much are Pentaxians collectively, not you or me, willing to pay?

We're going in circles, mate, you pretend economics doesn't exist. :)

The D500 was $2000 at launch time, more than a K-1, you've already confessed you would only pay $1700!

You won't find many Pentaxians who'll pay $1700 for a crop camera, let alone two grand.

Below are three JPGs from today. One is Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese who spoke before today's Reclink Community Cup charity game at Victoria Park (DFA28-105), the second is Tim Rodgers of You Am I after slotting a goal in the first quarter (Sigma 150-500). The third is also with the Sigma 'Bigmos', but at 230mm.

To shoot basketball or netball, you can do it with a 70-200 f2.8 (Pentax has an excellent one, I make do with the Tamron). In a field sport, ideally you also have a $10000 400mm f2.8 of some kind, and you use that until the play comes down your end and the field of view is no longer including the players' feet and faces, so you switch to the 70-200. My long lens is either the FA*300 f4.5 or the Siggy, as I'm a hobbyist. The DFA 150-450 is an obvious purchase.

Less than you think, Broo.

That's a lens that works on previous bodies, too.

APS-C shooters have that one and all the DFA and FA lenses to buy if they want to shoot sports and action.

This is no different from the other companies, except Fuji, who don't have any FF lenses.

Canon has very few APS-C lenses.

A Canon sports shooter must buy full frame lenses.

If you were to make some special lens that only worked on the new flagship APS-C body, that would be a niche use of a niche lens on a niche body of a niche brand. That's … ahem, niche … very few sales.

The money spent to develop the product and build a production run would sit on shelves somewhere waiting to be sold over a large number of years, which camera companies don't have, they're all in a sales crisis right now!

You might as well leave that step out, GnD.

The damage has been done shooting in 8-bit JPG, you don't get any of that data back by a subsequent conversion to 16-bit TIFF. :)

I've seen a claim that one in five crashes in rural areas involve an animal.

Kangaroos are common. You can even buy so-called 'roo bars' as an extra layer of protection for the front of your 4wd.

Where funding is available, the fences next to freeways are extra high ... because they're jumpers!

There are escaped/wild deer in some parts of the southern states. Like rabbits and foxes, they were imported for hunting.

Which ones?

Not your Fat Fifty, not my 28-105 or 55-300, or the Pentax 70-200. :)

I'm an amateur who shoots wildlife, action and sports (hope to be at the Reclink Community Cup tomorrow) and take the same pictures - and make the same mistakes- as the Canikon crowd around me.

Yes, but you said you'd pay $1700, Broo.

Many Pentaxians won't wear that, they paid $1200, $1300 for their K-3.

Better save up for that Canon 1DX! :D

That's up to the market researchers to report on. It won't be by internet polls or looking at gaijin ranting like this forum either, they're notoriously contradictory and unreliable, it'll be focus groups and the distributors who are consulted.

My guess is that like Kenspo said, Pentaxians are notorious tight ... wads.

Not individuals, but collectively.

You have to charge more in comparison to full frame because the K-1 can cause some to buy new lenses, that's not true of APS-C, the body can't be a loss leader and has to be very profitable in its own right.

Mate, next time we meet, let's have a beer and explain economics. You're talking like a starry eyed hippy with braided hair, or possibly a cargo cultist. :D

Bring your DFA*50, too, so I can have a go. :)

Always RAW, MDO. :)

A JPG - even from a phone - has been captured first, then a conversion done.

Try taking a real simple picture of a brickwall and don't use that remote trigger *unless it can do 2s delay*, Haroon.

The reason I say this is to test for shutter and mirror shock, and to rule out haze to distant objects.

It's a mirrorless, so carry an extra battery like I do with my Sonys when walking around. :)

I gotta be honest with you, Haroon, I'm disagreeing with what you said in your original post about the sides being softer.

Nothing is particularly sharp in the first image, that's a scene that stretches for many many kilometres … it's only shot at f8, where did you focus? Was it on a tripod or handheld? Were you using the two-second delay?
