K-3 or K-70?

You already received some good advice. I think that both camera are good options, but let me share my own take.

I travelled a lot internationally (airline) and have continued to travel domestically (car, walking). Since 2009, I travel nearly always with my K-7 and/or K-3. I value the robust and solid body of my cameras, and this is why I would suggest to go for the K-3.

First is is more sturdy/solid IMHO than the K-70. Second, the K-3 has had a great reputation with with few 'gremlins' and quirks, compared to the K-70 (IMHO and based upon PF posts).

I hope that the advice will help.

Help - Video For Dance Recital

You received already some good advice,

I may suggest to consider a shotgun mic for the audio, on one of the camera. The K-5 has a mic jack. The shotgun mic will enable to have a cleaner audio record of the recital.

I used before successfully the Rode Videomic shotgun Rode VideoMic Pro shotgun reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database. (I have no vested interest).

Hope that the suggestion may help.

Thank you for the suggestions.
Borescope and Endoscopes are simlar in someways, but the latter is mostly used to design medical equipment. The main part is a flexible "cable: with an optical fire inside a lens at one end and a connector at the other end connected to a recording equipment and controller.
I will try a borescope connected to a USB cable, as suggested by i_trax, but I feat that the video quality (incl. frame rate and pixel resolution) might not be enough. I am hoping to learn if I can connect the optical cable to a high quality camera/video-camera, for better recording capability.
I will post some update if I progress.

I have an application where I would like to record some movies (HD resolution or higher) at 30 fps (or higher) with a waterproof borescope. I wonder if anyone has tried to connect a borescope to a dSLR before. Alternately, would anyone as connected a borescope to a HD video camera?
Alternately, could anyone point me to some hardware (manufacturer, model)? In this application, the cable will be about 1 m and does not need to be much longer.
Any hints and suggestion are most welcome, incl. past experiences.
Thank you in advance.

A gentle bump for a great lens, With hood and caps, it is reasonably price IMHO as a CZ85mm owner. The lens does not come often in ZK mount.

Hope that someone will benefit....

Why Camera doesn't Display Zoom Info

I am not sure why you need the zoom number in mm, I use both prime lenses and all-around zoom lenses, always with the optical viewfinder OV. And I do not need the zoom number in mm.

What I see is what I get ... with the great (Pentax) OV. And BTW thank you Pentax for your superb OV in the K-7, K-5, K-3! (and likely K-1 that I do not have)

My 5 cents.

We're Saving Money by Being Pentaxians !?

+1. Photography is a hobby and not a money saving exercise.

But high-quality lenses are a good investment nonetheless. They do not loose values IMHO. We saw an increase in resale value of a few FF lenses with the apparition of the K-1. Not to mention now the rarely of some Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses....
It is a different story with camera body. Everyone knows that they loose rapidly their values. But for the many Pentaxians who continue to use ad re-use their camera bodies for years, like me who continues to use my K-7 bought new in 2009, the re-sale value of camera bodies is nearly irrelevant...

My 5 cents.

18-270 DA Lens

I am sorry to hear about your problem, and I wonder if it is a lens or a camera body issue.

I have the DA18-270mm, the DA18-250mm and the DA18-135mm. The IQ is generally similar, and the photographer (rather than the lens) will account for the difference in IQ most often. Between these 3 lenses, my experience suggest that each one has its pros and cons:
-DA18-135mm is WR, but a a bit short at the long range (135mm)
-DA18-250mm is solid, relatively cheap and well-regarded - noisy AF
-DA18-270mm is silent and fast AF - a bit expensive

For your comment on the lack of sharpness, I think that you need to acknowledge that a all-around zoom lens will never be as sharp as a good prime lens. Full-stop. Then off course some PP can help in sharpening the photos and you need to be willing to do it.

On another hand, could it be that your camera body has back focusing issue? What body do you use? How does it behave with other lenses, in particular prime lenses?

Hope that the comments may assist.

Pentax K-3 firmware update troubles

I have installed the firmware 1.42 on my K-3 several weeks ago and I have had no issue with any lens, although I acknowledge that I do not own the DFA macro 100 mm f1.8 WR. I have also not read any issue report on this Forum.
I might suggest to re-install firmware 1.41(?) if it solves your issue.
Hope that the info may assist and that other could have more constructive suggestions.

Star vs limited lenses

IQ for the FA Limited, with a widespread recognition of the IQ across all brands. For example:

Pancake design and IQ for the DA Limited.

And we could add: robustness, compatibility with (most) Pentax bodies...

My 5 cents....

Pentax k70 vs Pentax kp vs pentax k1 mark 2

I believe that you already received a lot of very good advice. Let me share/repeat a major point: the lenses, and I will share my own thoughts based upon my dSLR experience of 12 years into Pentax.

I might be considered as a 'semi-pro', in the sense that I use my photographs to illustrate my works, in books, articles and reports. While my photographs are often the envy of colleagues who are not into photography, I would rather regard myself as a knowledgeable amateur, who know his weakness(es).

The lenses are the most important tool of my photography. I continue to use older camera bodies, like my K-7, K-01 and K-3, and I am not afraid to say that these older bodies do a great job with the right lens(es). But the best camera with the wrong lens(ses) will never deliver the most 'awesome' shots IMHO. My best shots (as per others) are typically those taken with the right lens at the right time and right place. The best lenses are the most expensive and they are worth every penny.

In summary, what type of photography do you do mostly? What lenses do you need? Which one will work best for you (consider to rent to try a few)? Invest in lenses ultimately.

My 5 cents, hoping that it may help.

The video movies will be analysed in Matlab, with an optical flow routine, which use AVI uncompressed files as input.

Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions. Much appreciated.

Both AVIDemux and Handbrake can concert to grayscale.

Handbrake is versatile but cannot convert Pentax dSLR movies to to AVI.

AVIDemux can expert to AVI format, but it is not uncompressed.

Any further suggestion is most welcome. if I find a solution, I would share the solution in this thread.

Converting dSLR Movie File to B&W AVI (uncompressed) withoutn loss of resolution

I want to convert a series of movie files recorded with Pentax dSLRs into B&W AVI (uncompressed), without loss of resolution.

I have a series of movies recorded with a K-3 at 1920x1080 px (60 fps). I need to convert these to 1920x1080 px AVI (uncompressed) Black & White (+). I would appreciate any constructive hint/advice/suggestion

(+) For anyone interested, I will apply a technique call Optical Flow (OF) to derive a velocity field from a movie of water flow.

The software VirtualDub can filter the movie to grayscale (i.e. Black and White), but VirtuaDub does not read the K-3 movies. I tried to a few softwares to convert the .MOV files to .AVI, but I (so far) have a loss of resolution from 1920x1080 px down to 720x480 px.

Does anyone could suggest a software or a workflow for the conversion of Pentax dSLR movies into B&W AVI (uncompressed), without loss of resolution?

Many thanks in advance for any hint and pointer.

PDCU (Pentax Digital Camera Utility) software can be also downloaded from the Rico/Pentax website. During the installation [only], make sure that you have a USB device (eg memory stick) called "S-SW140" connected to your computer. That is all and it will work afterwards without any USB device!

PDCU might not be the most convivial interface but it is very powerful IMHO.

Hope that the comment will help.
