K-1mkII missing focus only in LV

:o

Covering the OVF resolves all issues! I hadn't thought of that, because that wasn't necessary with my K-5. The viewfinder of the K-1 is much larger and brighter of course, and lets in much more light through the other direction too.

I'm so happy that my camera isn't broken. Embarrassed, but happy.

K-1mkII missing focus only in LV

Ok, this morning I did some more testing... Some suggested to use the select focus instead of spot focus and I wanted to quickly try that. At first I thought that that resolved the issues. Which is great of course! But when I returned to spot focus again I could no longer reproduce the error?! I cannot just let that go and forget about it without knowing what caused it.

Only after some more extensive testing, trying to reproduce the error, it came back. In both spot AF and select AF. I also noticed that the colors in photos taken with LV seem desaturated in comparison to photos taken through the OVF. It can also be seen in the test photos that I posted earlier in this thread.

This maybe a stupid theory of mine, but could it be caused by the sensor heating up? Or because it's used longer in live view mode? In live view the sensor is used to feed information to the screen constantly. But when using the OVF it is "resting" until the actual picture is taken.

I find this so strange, because in my K-5 I am so used to AF in live view being much more precise. There it would seem the other way round.

Another test with a different uninteresting subject. Outside this time. Tripod, 2 seconds timer, SR off, 1/2000s, F4.0, ISO100. Both focus types in spot focus. Left is OVF, right is liveview. It seems like it's focusing behind the center spot.

I don't know what EFCS is. If it's the electronic shutter option then I've already tried that which doesn't help. I just now tried setting it to 1/250s. Also no improvement over focusing via the OVF.

Yes, I did use the self timer on 2 seconds for the above pictures.

When increasing speed and iso it does not improve.

I used spot focus in both modes.

In this case I was using the new FA HD 43 limited. But the same difference occurs when using my DFA 28-105.

I have the latest firmware 1.20

Here's the same uninteresting picture on a tripod. Left is normal, right is via live view. Both with the same lens. F4, 1/4sec, ISO100.

This is a weird issue. Today I noticed that my K-1mkII is clearly missing focus in liveview only. When I take the same picture twice, once in normal mode and once in liveview, then the latter one is unsharp. And it seems to do in consistently too. It does it with all lenses.

What my be causing this? Anything I can do?

I hadn't considered the DA* 55 because I dismissed it on the assumption that it wouldn't fit the full frame image circle. So that's excellent news to me. There's probably a test thread somewhere, but I can't find it.

I've been using the K-1II for some time now. And I couldn't carry both systems, so I sold off all my APSC gear. There's one thing that I miss really bad! And that's the DA 35mm limited macro. I love the field of view, I love the corner to corner sharpness and I love the rendering. I don't care about the macro part though.

Which lens compares the most on FF?

I currently have the FA 50 1.4, the FA 100 2.8 macro and the D FA 28-105. Now I'm itching to buy the new HD 43 limited, but the surprisingly negative reviews of the SMC version on this forum have convinced me that it's not that much of an upgrade over the FA 50 1.4

SMC DA* 16-50 vs HD DA 16-85

I'm trying to get back into Pentax... And photography in general. And I've lost track of all the new developments.

If you guys were me and were trying to decide between the SMC DA* 16-50 and the HD DA 16-85, which one would you pick? And why? Obviously I intend to use this lens for general shooting. And to take it to places where the conditions are unsuitable for my precious limited lenses. I used to have a 18-135 that purpose, but I want something better now.

If I look at reviews and the scores at, for example, opticallimits, I get completely lost.

Trade 18-135 for 16-50?

I've got a lot of very nice primes. But I'm very careful with them. I just want one WR zoom that's going to take all the punishment of rain, dust, snow, etc...

That's interesting, what aspect exactly makes you prefer these images? This is what I'm afraid of, selling my excellent copy of the 18-135 for something that's going to make me miss it.

No, this is actually very helpful. I had wrongfully dismissed the 16-85 from the start because of the slower and variable aperture. But now judging from user reviews its performance seems to be excellent.

I need to do some more homework...

Thanks. Yes, in the ideal world I'd have both lenses as well... But in the real world I promised my wife that I wouldn't expand my lens collection any further.

Which one has the better IQ? (In the wide to normal range, of course.)

Does anybody own, or has owned, both the DA 18-135 and the DA* SDM 16-50?

I have the 18-135 for quite some time now, and I think my copy is really good. IQ does fall of in the long end quite quickly though. But from 18 to about 80is it's really good. And I don't really care much about the tele end. Most of my shooting is wide to normal.

Now an opportunity has arisen. I can trade in my 18-135, together with some added cash, for a fairly new DA* SDM 16-50. First I was very excited about the possible upgrade, but when I see the reviews of the 16-50 on this forum, I get very discouraged.

Can anybody who has experience with both shed some light please?

DXO's scores seem to agree entirely with Photozone's:

Pentax smc DA Star 55mm F1.4 SDM mounted on Pentax K-3 : Tests and Reviews

Pentax smc FA 50mm F1.4 mounted on Pentax K-3 : Tests and Reviews

I realize fully that I'm letting steering way to much on numbers instead of actual performance. It just doesn't feel much like an upgrade. Going to look for another sweet deal.

Thanks for your reply, I thought as much.

I've also come to the conclusion that my assumption that the DA*55 1.4 would be an improvement over my FA 50 1.4 is false. According to Photozone it has worse IQ then the FA 50. That was not what I expected. Moreover the DA* 55 autofocus takes a full second longer to lock.

So, I'm just going to leave this offer alone.

I can get a really sweet deal on a DA* 55 1.4 SDM. The deal is so sweet because the current owner notes that the SDM makes a high pitch sound during auto focusing. Maybe "squeeking" is the wrong word to describe it. It's more like a chirp/whistle. I'm a sucker for deals like this. Maybe you guys can talk some sense into me. Or preferably, confirm that this will ok.

Is this one of the clear signs that the SDM is going some time soon? Or could it still go on for years?

Did anybody ever find their 'perfect' camerabag?

Hmmm... I'm now thinking about the Lowepro Messenger 180 AW:

It's not an obvious camerabag, carries a large amount of kit and certainly looks good. It's just much bigger then I planned. The 160 AW is supposed to be smaller, but I can't find it in the stores anywhere.

This weekend on a typical family trip, I take my K5IIs, HD DA 35mm ltd and SMC DA 15 ltd. So the bag can really be smaller, but there are no unconspicuous bags of a smaller size. The smaller ones always end up being holster style camerabags.

It may be a cultural thing, but that looks very feminine. With the current influx over here in Europe a bag like this might result in worse events then bag that screams camera. [emoji1]

I'm going with the small kata.

Wow, a lot of good suggestions.

I realize there's a lot of personal taste involved. And that the suitable bag is depending on the situation.

This is the sort of bag I'm looking for! But a bit smaller. I just saw the little brother, the Kata DL-DC-439. I holds just enough for the camera with a lens, and an extra lens. Maybe two extra lenses when carrying limiteds.

Buying camera bodies and lenses, and being happy with those as well, is easy. That doesn't seem to workout with camera bags though, at least for me. I've tried about 9 in all shapes and sizes. But they're always either to big, to small, in the way, strangling me, etc...

I know I need something small, my camera with a lens, and an additional lens (maybe two) is all I ever take with me. And I prefer the messenger style bag over any other type. And sadly, a bag that doesn't scream EXPENSIVE CAMERA EQUIPMENT is a must in my part of the world.

So who has found a bag that fits in this category and is very happy with it? I really like to see your suggestions.
