Once I played with the menu it has gotten pretty easy to manipulate the menu when I need to which is very seldom except for not finalizing some of my smart function settings. The Stills. LV, Video knob is much easier to manipulate than a selection of buttons or having to push a button multiple times to cycle through the selections on one button. Over all this is one hell of a camera!!:D

Now, why exactly would there be a crop mode on play back with the rear screen? The black border around the rear screen was discussed over a year ago in the News and Rumors section of the forum. My vote for the reason is the touch capability.:)

Affinity Photo 50% off $25 USD Right Now

I bought it but not really impressed with it but haven't used it much. Maybe I've been spoiled by DXO PhotoLab for the past few years. The reason I bought Affinity was sort of a stop gap waiting for DXO to finish and publish their Mk III profiles and it was cheap.

Thanks, I didn't discover the damsel fly until I had downloaded the JPEG to my laptop. I never saw it before the shot. You won't regret buying the Mk III it's well worth the money. Thanks for viewing!!:)

My Mk III Bicycle rider test

You're probably right but this was an impromptu event. these aren't keepers. I just wanted to show what the Mk III can do and it certainly can track well. If I want a few keepers, I'll use DXO PhotoLab 4.3 to clean up the noise and do a bit of other post work.

My Mk III Bicycle rider test

I found a willing participant yesterday for my own Autofocus bicycle rider test. No swerving though at the speeds this guy was going. If anyone cares to view them I posted all 21 of the series from start to finish on my Flickr site Larry Mc | Flickr The shots are consecutively numbered from beginning to finish and the Flickr page will show my settings. I shot with the 55-300 PLM, Its hard to find any fault with the series they are SOOC JPEGs with no sharpening or any manipulation of the files with only my Copyright Signature added by DXO PhotoLab. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Has anyone considered the sensor mount and S/R system in all of this discussion ? Possibly it is not designed to be used with the sensor pointing straight down with the camera hard mounted.

K3-3 AF questions

SFn/(Num) shows up in the lower right of the viewfinder. The reason I use the A/F mode button is that it allows me to add another smart function that otherwise could not be used because the A/F area selections occupies that selection. I also have SR as a smart function along with Drive Mode.:)

With A/Fs there is no selectable A/F areas (red boxes) involved just the white Auto Area boxes and as @mtkeller has stated you can use the joystick in lieu of focus and recompose for static subjects. For potentially non stationary subjects use A/Fc with the red boxes.:)

Precisely with the A/F mode button it's much easier than trying to remember what the cryptic SFn/(num) means. The A/F mode button is just as easy to access as the S.Fn button is.

I totally disagree take a look through the Ops past posts and practically all of those are basically gripes regarding something about Pentax that he doesn't like. There are chronic complainers who don't actually want help they just prefer complaining. These types of continuous complaint get totally tiring and serve no useful purpose except to turn people away from Pentax and a superb camera.

You are dealing with a whole new animal from Pentax with the Mk III especially Continuous A/F and autofocus areas. The A/f is hard to screw up. Try each auto focus area to get familiar with each one Expanded Area S, M and Large. Start out learning the Expanded AF Area Large as this area works hand in hand with Continuous A/F and tracks really well. Don't be afraid to work in TAV mode and let the ISO float just dial in a reasonable Aperture setting and depending on the speed of your subject set your shutter speed higher than you normally would with say a K-3 Mk I or a KP. Today I shot a couple of series of a guy riding a road bike with my 55-300 PLM and of forty to fifty or so Continuous A/F images not a single one was out of focus. Also don't worry about the little squares not being on the target sometimes the camera usually always stays locked in.

As for multiple subjects in the frame place the center + on the subject you want to track and use one of the red colored expanded Area AF selections. Experiment with the three different area sizes.:)

You should go to them right now and apologize profusely then tell them that you aren't abandoning them that its just a temporary "thing" with the Mk III. Maybe they will understand and forgive you. That is the gentlemanly thing to do.

This gentleman was gracious enough to allow a photograph. I decided to post SOOC JPEGs for now until DXO gets finished with their Pentax K-3 Mk III profiles. Try as I may I have not found any readily available RAW processing software that can compete with the straight out of camera images. Check the detail in this image, there is a damsel fly flying by in the upper left of the frame in front of the cloud formation. Now that is some great detail!!
