To be honest, I actually own a Sigma FP which is also L mount, so the Panasonics are looking mightily tempting. That said, I really prefer to own cameras dedicated to either video or photography, and not something more hybrid, so we'll see.

Under normal circumstances I might be interested in a swap, however I'm having a bit of a moment and may be buying into another brand for my digital work. The problem mainly is that I put high value on build quality, and so far the only mirrorless camera that has impressed me in that regard is the Leica SL, so I'm in a bit of a conundrum.

Yeah, its a little bit of a shame that its a fixed LCD, however given the intent of the camera being so modular, I'd rather as durable a core (aka camera) as possible.

As for HDMI viewfinders, I expect someone will eventually come up with something, though I am concerned that maybe you can't use both HDMI and USB storage simultaneously.

Yeah I pretty much found that you save about $50 if getting it in the kit, at least here in Aus, and honestly I don't really crave it unless I can acquire a small HDMI viewfinder. If you know of any I'd love to hear more.

The Novoflex was around $60 USD if I remember correctly!

I did think about the Sigma 45mm f2.8, but when I found out it was $750 AUD I quickly forgot about it, considering I bought the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art for Pentax for $799, which is two stops brighter. I figure in time I'll buy it, but not for a silly markup like that.

So thankfully I'm not really into the whole AF video look, honestly every example I've see so far from any manufacturer looks sloppy and low end, so what I've done is instead aquire a full set of SMC Takumars to use as makeshift cine lenses.

On the topic of adaptors, I didn't purchase the Kipon one because of its 'Special Order' status, but I did get the Novoflex one that shipped next day.

Just received mine today in the mail! Kinda reminds me of a Pentax camera in the way that it's quite compact yet dense and evidently well made. Don't have a single lens for it unfortunately, so the most I've done is boot it and setup the basic functions. Will get back to you when my L-m42 adaptor makes it here.

Fair call, but honestly, this does look like quite the compact flagship.

I'm just going to jump the gun and make my wishlist:

Sensor: 32mp APS-C
Frame Rate: >7fps
Viewfinder: 1x magnification (with that adjustable ground glass thay Ricoh patented) + LCD
Video: 4K30 + Clean HDMI
Screen: High Res Touchscreen

Dreams:

Hybrid viewfinder
10fps Burst
4K60
Fast Wifi

As long as this has the viewfinder LCD of the K-1, its an instant preorder for me. Shame about the lack of tilt screen though.

Pentax DA 560mm f5.6 Tips and Advice?

I have indeed kept the lens, but I did have to send it off to Japan for a CLA after looseness between the tripod ring and focusing ring developed. Quite disappointing but considering the price I got secondhand for the lens, not a deal breaker.

Personally I've adopted two different shooting styles with this lens.

Mostly, I'll use the DA560 on a massive Leofoto LN-404C Carbon Fibre tripod (the thing extends to aprox 6'2), mated to a Sirui K-40x Ballhead and Wimberley Sidekick Mk II. This provides a more than adequate support for the K1 + DA560 Combo, and all of the component parts work excellently. Unfortunately all this gear adds up to a huge amount of weight.

Alternatively, I've become quite attached to using the lens handheld, with a Peak Design Slide strap attached to the tripod foot. Though bulky, the weight really isn't that much more than the DFA*70-200/2.8, and allows me to back significantly lighter.

Overall I'm very happy with the lens, just need to steal it back from my father, who loaned it from me a month ago for a Kakadu wilderness trip and hasn't yet returned hahaha.

Rumours of HD Pentax-D FA 50-300mm f/4.5-5.6/6.3

Hey maybe its a D-FA 50-150mm f2.8, something smaller than the D-FA* 70-200mm f2.8 for FF, and something to replace the DA* 50-135mm f2.8 for APS-C

Revisiting the DA* 60-250?

I am having quite a similar conundrum at the moment, having both a heavy and light kit, but no light FF tele option. Whilst at first I thought that the DA 60-250 would fill that niche well, I found that the focus and build quality of the lens isn't up to par compared to the more modern DA*/DFA* lenses. Optically that lens is fantastic, but honestly I would probably add a 200mm f2.8 and 1.4x TC as a light tele photo option instead, especially considering the considerable focus breathing problems that the 60-250mm had at close focusing distances.

That said, I currently use a Tokina AT-X 70-210mm f4.5 AF for my light tele, and due to its light weight it fits my needs currently until the 70-200mm f4 arrives.

Is this the rarest K-Mount lens? (Sigma 800mm f5.6)

As I am waiting for my DA560 to get back from a trip to Japan, GAS reared it's ugly head and led me to this, a seemingly incredibly rare lens in the form of the 'Sigma EX 800mm f5.6 AF', in K-mount no less. From the looks of things, it has a genuine Pentax style aperture ring, but unfortunately there are no pictures of the lens mount on the eBay listing. Any thoughts?

After shooting with the DFA* 70-200/2.8 and DFA* 50/1.4 and being incredibly happy with the results, I can tell you that I'll be definitely be on the DFA* 85/1.4 waiting list.

When it comes to the continual 'Ricoh won't do this/that whining problem', I'm definitely part of the problem. All I wish is that they'd release a DFA* 200/2 or 300/2.8 with matching TC's to accompany the DA 560/5.6. Until then, I guess I'll just have to patiently wait. :P

Pentax Mirrorless should use a shortened 645 mount

I'd be very concerned for their business if they listened to all the internet feedback, considering most of it seems to be either white noise or pointless whinging. I do agree that MF is probably the best way for smaller vendors to make profits (especially seeing that all of the smaller players aside from Olympus and Panasonic now offer medium format cameras (Fuji with the GF, Leica with the S, along with the Hasselblad and Phase One systems). At the same time, Ricoh has done and excellent job of spreading their R&D budgets across multiple formats, and hope, if profitable, they continue to do so.

That's the beauty of hypotheticals. Honestly, I think it's inevitable that Pentax will jump on the mirrorless bandwagon, but I really do hope they take DSLR's and the K-mount as far as they can before they decide to hop in.

Pentax Mirrorless should use a shortened 645 mount

Before you shoot me down, here me out. If Pentax does decide to go all in with a mirrorless system, they should consider using the 645 mount with a shortened flange distance. This would allow them the ability to only develop one line of lenses across all sensor formats, and also allow an easy upgrade path between sensor sizes. You could start with a APS-C camera, and eventually work your way up to a FF 645 sensor, all the while utilising only one lens mount.

If they were clever about this, they could still include an internal motor inside of the camera to allow use of they're extensive collection of screw drive lenses (with the appropriate adaptor). And for anyone worrying about size, here's a close to scale 645 mount super imposed on a close to scale K-70, to show that the size wouldn't be excessive.

The point that I am trying to make here, is that Ricoh could use the "mirrorless revolution" as an excuse to tidy up their mount selection, while simultaneously being competitive with modern trends, future proofing themselves by over enginneering their mount, whilst also supporting their current customers in all sensor sizes.

Yeah when I used to do cricket photography for the local newspaper, that's what I'd do with the 300mm f2.8, much easier on the back I find.

Ah, so similar to how I have the DFA* 70-200mm or Tamron 300mm f2.8 hooked up! Good to know that'll continue to work for me!!!

Just a heads up (also, I hope I'm not breaking forum rules atm), Roberts Camera has a DA560mm for sale on Ebay (Pentax AF DA 560mm f5.6 ED AW IF Lens 560/5.6 #530 | eBay), and I bet you that if you offered them between $2400-2800USD they'd bite... Not that I'm suggesting that you try ;)

Thanks for the links mate, definitely a bit of extra gear will need to be headed my way by the sound of things! I think on the top of my list will definitely be that tripod plate!

I see you use the Peak Design Slide with the lens, and as I use that combo too, I'm interested to see how you prefer to attach the anchors to the lens, and if you find the lens to heavy to be hanging from your shoulders?

So basically, get a tripod that suits both my needs and that of the lens, aka definitely not a pan/tilt for me (I honestly can't stand them personally), and make sure that it's high quality and relatively heavy.

On the topic of dampening vibrations, thats definitely going to be a problem with the way I shoot as I am always on the run, but hopefully I can find a compromise between high ISO (to keep the shutter speed high) and the balance between noise and detail! Easier said than done I'm sure, but practice makes perfect!

Most importantly though, is to not drop the lens xD

Thanks for the feedback mate!

Thanks for the additional resources, I'll definitely be diving into those!

So it seems that on the tripod front, a bit of trial and error is in order to find a perfect solution for me. Thankfully, I live close to the largest camera store in the southern hemisphere so I will definitely be bringing it in to try a few different combos. If you could recommend a few items that would be super helpful in getting me into the right ball park!

On the bag end of things, I think I have that worked out. For my day to day bag I have a 20L Peak Design Everyday Backpack, which I think in a pinch could hold it, though I do have a larger Kata Sling bag permanently set up for my Tamron 300mm f2.8 AF, so I think that'll work better for toting it around. For more intensive events/hiking I have a Lowepro ProTrekker bag that will definitely fit the lens along with a 15-30mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and 2 K-1 (not that it's any good for the back).

To be honest though, I prefer to just wear my 300mm f2.8 on a nice padded shoulder strap instead, so I think that'll end up being my carrying solution yet again :p

Ah, someone in Melbourne has the DFA 150-450mm... I think a meetup is in order at some point in the future!

Yeah I most definitely won't be putting my new lens on a dinky $100 Inca tripod. My current plan is to get a big ball head, and one of those pseudo gimbal heads to anchor the lens, that way I can use the same head for all of my lenses.

My one wish is that the lens had a removable tripod foot ala DFA 70-200/150-450, that way I could keep one attached to my Peak Design Strap, and the other permanently attached to the gimbal. Maybe one day I'll got a custom job done on the lens in Japan, but probably not.

---------- Post added 09-19-18 at 12:25 PM ----------

Now thats a tripod!!! Got to admit I love the wood look! Any particular advantages to a wooden tripod (other than the heavy weight and low thermal conductivity)?

---------- Post added 09-19-18 at 12:26 PM ----------

Okay long plate, something I definitely overlooked! On the shopping list it goes. I'm thinking I'll get the white spray paint and sandpaper out!
