Wifi works just fine
Transferring files work like a breeze. No problems there, Raw goes in about 8-10sec, JPG in 3-5.
Can not connect BT just times out.
Any ideas?

Yes, they offer the same viewfinder as the GR II.

I have so far been very happy with my GR III so far. This is my first GR camera. Never play in the arena of sub compacts if you will. Color coming out of it has been great. Still trying to get a grip on the B&W. Not a big fan of heavy contrast as some street shooters are today. FOV is touch wide for my taste that will come in time though. As will "snap focus" remembering to use it.

Meeting with a Pentax rep re. 645z issues

Fuji-x's covers more or less the same area and also because I use Fuji's not Sony's. Don't zip about the Sony system. Never touched one.

Not having touched a 645z yet I have no idea what the focus point pattern is like with this copy of the camera. Where as I've used Nikon, Canon and Fuji's. The first Canon 20D I owned had a grand total of 9 focus point in the center of the finder. Then Mark II FF (not a 5D or 5dMKII) cover more points across the finder. The outer points on a 20D were useless in low light or any light for that matter.

I'm more concerned about the CA in the newer lenses that Rob is talking about along with the live view/tethering issues then auto focus. I think my eyes are still good enough to manual focus. The auto focus with other MF cameras I've used eh was okay. The nice thing with MF is some of their glass is faster than ƒ4. Plus you can adapt 67 glass as well.

I'm sure the Ricoh engineers can figure out how to spread out the 27 focus point they have to work with and may be add a few more. One can only hope they will listen to their customers like some of the other camera companies are doing today. It took Canon and Nikon both a long time before they listen to the working pro in the early digital days. Engineers don't always think like photographers when they design things and I don't think like an engineer. It will be interesting see how long it takes Ricoh to implement these changes into their MF new camera.

This camera for me will be for doing portraits and editorial work not for low light events even though its ISO range is that of new DSLR's/mirrorless systems. I just don't want to spend the extra time in LR, C1 or PS to removing CA been there done that.

Ricoh is relatively new to the MF world anyway. Again hopefully they will listen to Rob and others like him plus this forum to make changes that will help all of us. Time will tell!

Glad to hear the meeting went well. Another system to look at for auto focus points is fuji x's. They cover even more area than Canon or Nikon and I have use both extensively. The CA is a concern especially when one is looking to get into this system. Since Ricoh is one the smaller players on the block right now let hope the improvement will show up in their next body. It seem they are where FF 35mm were a few years ago, In the long run it's all good for us. Let hope they listen as Fuji has listen to customers with improvements to their system.
May not be bad idea to invite a pentax/ricoh rep to join the MF forum for feed back etc, unless they are already here.

Have been in his studio in NY several times. The lighting is very controlled in the viewing space. One of the selling points made by salesperson is how the files/film are processed and the prints had lots silver in them because of the silver halide based paper by Fuji that's what gives them their look on the wall with proper lighting. Like other here some of his collection is over worked yet it impressive to see in person. His business model seems to be working very well for him. He shot film till recently I guess till he moved over to digital from large/medium format film.

Pentax 645Z tethering

Wanting to buy into Pentax 645 and Pentax brand in the near future this is not good news. Though it's not a deal breaker either. It will just make me think a little deeper whether to go with medium format or dive back into 35 FF.

Just not a big fan of LR UI. Used Aperture for the longest time until I realize it was going to be die a slow and painful death as apple has done with most of their software. Have used C1 on and off since v2/3 it was always clunky. LR workflow at the time was less painful than C1's when doing a large volume of images. Tethering most camera brands has been an issue with most third party software maker from my experience. Most camera maker software was less than user friendly for the most part. Tethering would cut back on chimping when shooting on location or in a studio environment which is a time saver for post production.

So I ventured over to Phase One's forum and did some searching. They are very clear about not supporting competing medium format cameras in their software. Which is disappointing yet very understandable. They did share a workaround using Adobe DNG converter (free download and a few extra steps in your workflow) and C1. Some one also pointed out that native Pentax DNG's did work in C1v8 unless they changed EXIF info or something along theses lines. One can understand why Pentax owners not very happy. They did point out besides the brands under their umbrella they did support 200+ other cameras models. In their eyes they are not leaving money on the table world wide.

Tethering would be nice to have for the projects I have in mind working with medium format camera or FF 35mm. I can live with out it if necessary. My work around would be the workflow I'm using now- shoot, done download, (cards 4 card at once using photo mechanic), edit, CC in C1, LR or Aperture. It's understandable why studio shooters want to be able to tether with a client standing over your shoulder. They kinda of expect instant viewing these days when in a studio. Did my fare share of drop and pops. Having used tethering with a Dicomed scan back and Hasselblad with FW800 and I can not imagine tethering using USB 2/3 with 50+MB files. FW800 was painful enough with smaller files. Aperture did not support tethering Canon at the time I used the software if my memory serves me correctly yet it supported lecia and nikon.

Not being a 645z owner just yet can the 645z shoot raw plus jpg and just view a jpg via tethering?

Pentax Glass for 645z

Great point! Not much of a foul weather photographer. That could change in the future though. The lens coverage would be perfect for my needs. The 25mm may be a little much.

From what I've read thus far the usable range of the 645z is 100-6400 which would more than make up for the minimum 2.8-4 of some lenses.

So how is the speed of the auto focus on the newer lenses? Could go back to film days to zone focus for event work. Think the files would be over kill. :)

Now that I have the knowledge of 6x7 glass will work with 645 via an adapter that opens up a new set of lenses to look into. Really want something in the 70-120 range for portrait work. 150-180 may be a little long for my needs. Like the 25mm may be a little on the wide side. The beauty of a file this size one can always crop to taste. When I shot 6x6 film did most of my work with a 60, 80 and 120 then digital came along.

Lens review has been helpful. Went there before posting.

Pentax Glass for 645z

Royce Thanks. That's exactly what I looking for in a review.

Sorry for such an open ended question. It got me an answer that I was after. :)

Before I joining the forum I searched for information on lenses and 645z and found some information that lead to ask my above.

Shot 6x6 for a very long time. Large format as well for personal work. There were some older lenses that were know to be better than others in the used market back in the day. Another reason I asked the question I did. The lenses review were not giving me the information I was looking for to be honest. It was helpful just wanted a little more information that what I found there. When there was no internet you had to depend on your local camera store. Ken Hansen usually had a great selection of used lenses to choice from in all formats. Digital and internet changed that years ago. The small mom pop camera store is hard to find these days even here in NYcity. Now you can shop the world and ask questions to much larger group to help you out. Of course you already knew that. :)

I'm still thinking if want drop that kind of money into another new system. Will my current business model support it? Pentax has made getting at least getting into a MF system reasonable to look into. I okay buying used glass. Looking around a little bit lenses seem to be limited for pentax 645 format.

Would of never thought of looking into an adapter to use 67 lenses with 645. I read that here and some place else. Thanks for the idea guys.

Looking into a medium format system to do some portrait work and landscape. With the hope that the large sensor will be better than the full frames sensors that are out there today. Dropped my FF 35 for a mirrorless system for doing events. It's more than enough for my clients and my needs. This may be more of a want more than it is a need.

MikeSF and btnapa thank you for your help.

Pentax Glass for 645z

Thanks for the info.

Are there any legacy lenses in the 645 format that are better than others? MF is oaky. Saying that after not using manual focus lens for a long long time. Hahahaha.

Beside eBay are there any dealers that are better than other for finding used pentax glass. Like KEH, B&H, Adorama, Sammy's etc. These are all state side dealers.

Thanks

Pentax Glass for 645z

So being new (and a newbie here) to Pentax system and looking to build a kit for a 645z.

Pentax make three tiers of glass from what I've found.
There is FA glass from the film days, D FA from the early digital days and DA from the current Digital Days.

I'm taking it that the FA lenses work with 645z okay just not great just like in the early days of digital 15 + years ago with film lenses. Then came along D FA glass which is an improvement in the quality of the images and works better with digital. (plus the chips improved as well). So the DA glass is designed for the newer or newest camera and chips in today's market.

Is there a crop factor to take in to consideration with the 645z glass like with 35mm cropped sensor to full frame?

Which are the better lenses in the DA, D FA and FA line? NOT interested in zooms period. Just prefer primes.

Looking for three lenses wide, normalish and something for portraits.

Did anyone covert from Phase One and Hasselbald over to Pentax. If so why?

Thanks for your time!

Looking to get into getting a Pentax 645z. Live and work in Brooklyn NY as a photographer. So I'm a newbie in medium format world of digital. Not a newbie to the digital world. Shot film 6x6 for many years. Looking to forward to learning and sharing info here. Still a window shopper for a 645 format for now. So off to ask some questions about bodies and glass.
