New K-series DSLR under development to be exhibited

Indeed. If it's a programmable function button 'shutter function' then likely one could program it to be the movie record button, for those that prefer to use this function rather than shutter release.

The presence of the AF joystick gives me hope that Pentax will give users what they have long been pining after - better AF and better video. (Because then Pentax cameras would be perfect).

Video is easier to do well with a smaller sensor, so APSC rather than FF. (some of the other speculative discussions around some kind of digital view finder read out would support improved video specs such as clean HDMI read out).

The presence of the video icon on the third wheel suggests to me that this camera is more video focused... and that Pentax is doing away with *some* of its usual conventions.

To Filter or Not to Filter

You can also use ND filters for purposes other than long exposure. Such as slowing down shutter speed in bright sunlight to increase dynamic range and reduce strong shadows. Bright sunlight is a phenomenon that occurs outdoors and therefore this might be another occasion when the general photographic purpose of a lens filter dovetails nicely with protection of the front element of the lens.

To Filter or Not to Filter

I've started using UV filters when shooting around children - they have a tendency to throw sand, bump the lens etc.

The other time it's good is when shooting at a beach or at an areas with fine water spray that gets on the front element.

Polarising filters are a separate discussion topic. Ideally I'd have the option of using one when shooting in bright sunlight, you can get much richer colours in the sky or obviously water will appear different.

Using an ND filter can also be smart if there's harsh sunlight.

Hope you get to use the DFA* 50mm soon, it's a world apart from most of the other Pentax lenses.

Color accuracy?

Sounds like a good set up.

This stuff isn't hard. Just requires a basic understanding, a system that works, and most of all consistency and always shooting the grey card.

I use an x-rite colour checker for the reference, and I create custom profiles for each individual shoot and your camera. Obviously if the light is changing a lot then you may need to take multiple colour checker photos and create multi-shot profiles.

But as @BigMackCam essentially says, going to this level of effort is pointless if the screen you edit on is not calibrated.

The effects you notice with reds and yellows may be just as likely to be an issue with the monitor you view the photos on as it is with the camera, assuming you're using only a single monitor.

Second the 28-105, it's relatively cheap second hand because it's sometimes sold as a kit lens, and overall good quality and performance, unmatched for size and weight and price.

Really nice photos. I like the busyness of the background on photos 1, feels like it adds to the mood.
Not so much on photo 3 though.

Best small tripod for Pentax K1 + 15-30

I have the standard Manfrotto 190 aluminium tripod which works great with the heavy ensemble of the K1 + 15-30, however it's main disadvantage is that it's pretty cumbersome when it comes to transportation and travel.

Are there any lighter, more compact tripods that could do the same job reasonably well?

15mm on K-1 for interiors or ...?

If you are doing interiors a lot you are probably going to see some advantages from having the zoom, being able to shoot at 18-22mm, 26-30mm etc and not needing to change lenses... if this is regular paid gig then it could be worth the money.

I use mine for architecture and design shoots. Having a zoom is nice to be able to play around a bit more. Weight is not really an issue on a job, though if you're using it for landscapes etc then I could see the problem.

I recently got an extended 5 year cover for a new camera bought in the EU - it includes standard warranty coverage and mishap insurance, meaning that it covers any damage from accidents for 5 years. It doesn't cover theft.

Have you had any issues with the camera thus far? If not, then maybe the best thing is to look after it well and hope for the best. The K1 is by most accounts very robust and reliable.

This is something you'll literally never notice or think about when you are using the camera /looking at photos. It's not a real world concern. Certainly not when doing pixel shift. Check out the DPR scene test for comparisons. PS kills noise especially at low ISO. Given that you will be shooting stationary items on a tripod you can probably shoot at ISO 100 for all shots.

2.

I haven't shot with it enough to tell. People say that the improvements are on the AF-C setting. My general sense is that there is some improvement. But really the biggest determinant around AF performance with Pentax is with good lenses (in my opinion). The DFA* lenses have the best autofocus performance. Currently there are two of these 50mm and 70-200mm - there is also a new DFA* 85mm coming out later this year.

The 24-70 is decent - I get fine results with it. Likewise with the 15-30.

Yeah but a third of the people posting on DPR think you don't need a camera any more these days and you can just use a phone, so it's not exactly a discerning crowd

Let's be realistic - the present goal for Pentax is to refresh all of its DSLR lines with new flagships - APS-C, FF and MF.

Even this seems to be a difficult task, given - I guess - the lack of capital investment from Ricoh. There's no way they can support an additional product line, which would be launched with no lenses.

Also, mirrorless right now is shaping up to be a bloodbath. There are a plethora of options in mirrorless full frame, and brands are discounting to get people to buy into a system. Panasonic could be a big loser with their S1/R. That will be an indication to Pentax there's not point in trying to launch new product now. Fujifilm seem to own the mirrorless APS-C segment and we can only expect that they will produce better products as well. Pentax is too far behind to launch now in a hyper competitive market where margins are going to be slim due to competition.

If Ricoh does do something, I'd say they should follow on from the success of the GRIII and produce something super compact, user friendly and innovative -entry level and quirky, something that people would want to use rather than a smart phone.

Personally I'm going to pick up a mirrorless camera, primarily for video and for lower weight while travelling, while maintaining the K1 with the f2.8 glass, and continue to use it for events shooting and studio work. I like OVF and I can't see how smaller weight/form factor can be an advantage when you're shooting say with a 70-200 f2,8. I'm doing that with the expectation that Pentax will launch a new FF camera that continues in the vein of the K1 while improving some of its weaknesses in the next 12-24 months (mainly better AF, especially wider coverage in the frame, ideally a joystick). Actually I like shooting with the K1's face detect mode in Liveview. It has some downsides and can be inconsistent, but if you're not in a rush and you play around with it to figure out the quirks, it can be pretty useful. Really hoping this gets an overhaul.

Also the DFA* 50mm lens - this is the best lens I've ever used. If the 85mm is on par then Pentax will be a portrait monster.

What's the blue thing on the card? Is it meant to be there? That's what your camera will likely be focusing on.
Worth re-doing this and being a bit closer so it's easier to see.

I don't see any bad photos, but I do see some pretty average editing. Some look they are over saturated, especially on the reds. A few look like they have overdone the HDR. (number 12 looks like it has a halo around the church?). One has over-sharpening.

personal favourites are 5, 15, and 16.

How about setting the strobe to optical slave mode?

I've used the Catcus set up (with V6II and RF60X) on the K1 and I was working in a studio with a strobe that I could set to optical slave mode and it all worked fine. May not work out doors in bright light, or so I've read.

There is a Finnish company called SharperShape that specialises in measuring and modelling vegetation via aerial surveying. This is for utilities companies mainly.

I'm not familiar with your project but I'd suggest looking at some of the complete package drones designed for agricultural industry, might be easier than putting it together yourself.
