OK, so, I know this is cheating, but my K3iii is really tempting me to redefine my BIF shooting...
Butterfly in flight?

---------- Post added 08-22-21 at 11:05 AM ----------

Here's another one to make up for the blatant lack of bird in my other BIF-photo. I'm not sure it counts either though. It flew without wings, apparently...

Capture One Pro 21 Update is Great and Frustrating at the Same Time

I'm still fairly new to C1 and although I watched some tutorial videos I have not been a very structured learner, and I still stumble on things by accident. I bought C1 20 just before the update, and didn't upgrade to 21 yet, since the reviews in here were lukewarm, and I thought my time might be better spent getting to know the program in the first place.

Maybe I will just skip an update, I don't know.

It would be really great if they implemented support for Pentax cameras. I have not tried using the program with a supported camera, so I guess it is hard to know what I am missing, but I noticed one thing the other day: I had been wondering why all my high iso photos from my K1ii and K3iii were very soft in C1 - and now I noticed that there is an auto-setting for noise removal that activates at iso 3200 and above, very much above what those two cameras require. I guess a profile for those specific cameras would include more appropriate settings for high iso levels... and other things.

Overall, I find my own level of creative control much higher than in my old LR. Apart from the fact that I had to change, since LR went cloud-subscription-mode-only, and that is not for me.

I have to say: For years I have dreamt of owning a camera that would let me take a sequence like this one with a fishing caspian tern. I LOVE my k3iii!

Thanks! I didn't notice that setting, I look forward to seeing if that changes my keeper-%! :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I might. As it is, I spend an awful lot of time shooting things that a smart person/camera probably wouldn't - such as way too small birds flying way too far off. (Danish wildlife has been hunted recklessly with other things than cameras for centuries - flight distance is ridiculous).

Experimenting with smarter settings is definitely something I will consider as a holiday activity this summer. For now, let's see if switching hold from low to high has an effect.

It was set to low. Changed to high now, I will see if that fixes it.

That sounds smart. A bit smarter than myself, possibly. I know these things are very much a matter of practising, but selecting focus points while panning with birds in flight is beyond my multitasking skills I am afraid. But I am pretty sure that hold AF DOES work even when I select the center point AF (At least I have managed to follow subjects and keep them in focus even if I didn't keep them in the center - I THINK the center point is the initial focus point, but the tracking uses a wider area. Otherwise my damselfly-in-flight definitely would not have been in focus here, since I did NOT manage to keep it centered while tracking. (The photo is cropped to recenter the damselfly, but it was at the edge of the original composition)

You assume correctly. This allows me to keep the button pressed when I want AF-C and let it go if I want focus to stay where it is. Things change fast and unpreditably with birds and animals, and I want somethng that allows me to stay in control without having to think too much first.

I think you are right, actually. I looked through some of the others, and focus seems to have moved all the way to the front.

The weird thing is I never noticed it hunting. Must have been really fast? And it found its way back to the deer within two burst shots.

I am using AF-C, AF Hold, center focus and AF assigned to the AF-button with the shutter AF turned off. I prefer the single center point AF since it lets me pick my object fast, for moving animals and such.

First, the K3iii is by a huge margin the best camera I have ever had. AF is precise and incredibly fast, and I have more keepers than ever.

But I noticed this: When I take a burst series (continous shooting, high), som of the pictures end up very soft. It is not a focus problem - so I noticed people discussing mirror blur, but that seems limited to rather slow shutter speeds(?) This happens to me at 1/1000 sec and faster.

To illustrate, here is a screenshot from Faststone showing thumbnails magnified to 100% of some deer I shot today. No 3 is very soft, and 2 is a bit soft. This happens regularly - but I still get keepers of course. More than with my earlier cameras.

Some truly amazing shots in this thread!

The K3iii does well on cuteness too. Here's one of my new baby bunnies: Got caught in the first shower of its life and turned into a hedgehog.

This is NOT a good image, but I think it serves as a sort of field test of the AF in poor light. It has been heavily cropped and some noise removed from the sky, and the exposure was lifted using the curve tool in Capture One - but I really only post it to show how well the AF performs in very poor light conditions. I took a series of heavily underexposed bat snapshots at about-as-dark-as-it-gets Danish summer conditions, and although the bat was just a fast-moving dot on the sensor, it kept focus really well!

(I know this isn't a standardised test in any sense, but it made me happy - just wanted to share before I upload it to iNaturalist and try to get a name for the bat... :) )

Since the new AF does such an amazing job with fast-moving subjects, I tried to lurk along with this lurking tiger beetle, which had its eye on a damselfly.
I'm sorry to say that when the action finally happened (long lurk), the damselfly was faster than the tiger beetle - and they were both faster than I was. So, no action shots from this scene!

How to get Faststone to recognise my K3iii as an external drive

Thanks for sharing! Oh, it's SO good to find you are not the only one! :D

Once I was driving down a dirt lane, passenger seat, my husband at the wheel, and a hare came running along the field. It kept pace with the care, and it was sooo close. My husband slowed down, the hare stopped. Then another hare came by, and they began fighting, RIGHT next to the car. I was shooting away ecstatically through the car window for a long while. Then the hares ran off, and I looked at the lcd-screen: No card in camera.

Of course that was before the dual slots. But WITH dual slots I once managed to leave the house with both slots empty. Luckily I noticed and managed by buy an sd-card before the next hare story developed... :)

I really liked the cable transfer option. You might say I should just grow up and learn to behave responsibly, but after 48 years of failing at that, my hopes are low.

jatrax, it would be great if you could share the brand/model? The first one I bought was very cheap, the second wasn't that cheap really, but I never bothered to return it - I just switched to cable transfer, which I was happy with. But if that option is out, and if I AM going to get another card reader, I might as well do it right this time... :)

For the moment, I'm going with the tmp-folder. Although it's a bit of a bother. I wrote Faststone to ask if they could possibly add MTP-support in their next update - but I really don't have any idea if that is realistic. They do frequent updates though, so unless there is a coding issue beyond my understanding, it could happen...

Matter of taste, I guess. I have a usb card reader. It is the second I bought: The first one didn't work. This one is unstable, it often loses connection during transfer, and I end up with some uncopied photos and some corrupt files, and then I need to figure out which to copy again. Sure, I could buy a third one. But I would rather not.

I... guess this is the media transfer protocol that the other posters were discussing? Apparently this option disappeared from the K3ii to K3iii? (Will check the manual)

Yes, copying everything to a folder called tmp and subsequently deleting is what I do now. It's clunky, and a worse work flow than I had - but maybe it's the best I can do. Makes more sense than buying new hardware anyway - card readers are cheap, sure, but more cheap unnecessary electronics isn't what I need, really, and possibly also not what the planet needs (said the lady who just bought herself another two cameras *cough*)

Removing the cards from the camera and sticking them into a card reader is more of a hassle than making and deleting a tmp-folder too, I guess. Apart from the fact that, being a total scatterbrain, remembering to put the cards back in the camera before leaving the house is another tiny risk I don't need in my workflow.

Anyway, thank you for your input everyone. I will look into repaaps suggestion, but I am afraid it might just refer to the "MSC/PTP" option, which I guess is no longer available.

It wasn't such a huge problem anyway. Just one small disadvantage to an otherwise great upgrade.

I have been using Faststone since forever, and I love it. I have a perfect workflow for selecting keepers from my raw files.

For editing, I have changed between various platforms - open source raw editing, then LR4 and now Capture One - but I have stuck to Faststone for selecting and copying from my SD-cards.

Now my current computer doesn't have a card reader, but that hasn't been a problem, since my K3, K3ii and K1 can all just be plugged into a USB port, and I can access them as an external drive and do the selection and copying my usual way in Faststone.

The K3iii is different. Windows recognises it, but as a camera, not a standard external drive. Faststone can't see it at all.

So far I have had to copy everything into a folder on my desktop that I call "tmp" and then point Faststone to the tmp-folder to do the proper selection of keepers. This is a bit silly, it adds to my workflow, and it doesn't allow me to select and delete definite non-keepers from the card as I usually do in this proces (postpones the need for a complete reformat a bit).

I think there ought to be a way to make my computer recognise the sd cards as normal external drives, like I can with my other cameras. But I really have no idea how. There's usually very clever people around this place though... so, any ideas?

I imagine that I will be using the USB-c cable for everyday charging, and keep my K3 charger + batteries as backups.

Are there any drawbacks to charging via cable, apart for time?

Wow - I can't believe this. I have been following the news in here, and didn't order myself, because I thought I might as well wait until the body was in stock.

Then my teenage son said that production probably couldn't keep up with preorders, and I might as well get an order in.

Well, I ordered from fotolooman in the Netherlands the day before yesterday. Their status said "in stock soon", and I ordered a few accessories and a lens too, but wrote in the comments that I would prefer to receive it all in one shipment (because getting just the accessories wouldn't be any fun). Then today I got a tracking number and notice of shipment. I wrote them to say that I would have preferred to wait until the body was there, as I had already specified.

They just replied: " the pentax k-3 III body, s inside, and we got plenty. Everything is in a box for you."

They got... plenty?

Anyway, not complaining. Happy. Somewhat flummoxed, but happy! Also, I might never actually have written "flummoxed" before.

If you find a German dealer citing a one year warranty, you should inform him that he is breaking EU regulations. Customers are ensured a minimum two year warranty within the EU.
Fotolooman.nl offers a five year warranty with camera purchases as standard. Going ABOVE the minimum is legal! :)
