HD FA 21 not on par with the other LTDs

Hi Gian
I have noticed that for such a wide lens the 21mm has a very shallow depth of field, I have the older FA 20mm as well as the FA* 24mm and I agree, when set at f8 you really could basically just point the lens in the direction of the subject and almost everything in the frame would be in focus using the traditional hyperfocal distance. This lens behaves in a completely different way, it has quite narrow depth of field to help isolate your subject, this is one of the strengths I have enjoyed using the lens. I find it has really helped isolate the subject with plenty of bokeh around it. Perhaps trying some RAW exposures rather than the JPEGs might help. The close up ability is great as well, I'm sure if you get out and use the lens daily you will be bringing home shots that you will be proud of in no time. The recent APSC Limited lenses have done little to impress me other than to be small and compact, this new 21mm does honour the spirit of the original 31,43 and 77mm lenses in delivering unique renderings rather than lines per millimetre on a test target. Here is a link to some photos I have taken this month with the lens in the single in challenge

Love the F*300, glad to see you do too :) Useful kits and with their original cases I can imagine little movement in the cases, no wonder the silver FA's still look pretty good.

The LS lenses are designed to give higher speed sync with flash exposures. They use the X sync from the lens to fire the flash, unfortunately there are no electrical contacts between the lens and the body. It uses the aperture lever that normally closes the aperture to also release the shutter in the lens. With the 67II you can still use older style automatic flash however not with your current flash. The AF400T can be attached in place of the left hand grip with the dedicated handle and a synch cord connected to the X synch which will enable you to have "auto" flash using the flash's inbuilt eye to quench it once enough light has reached the unit. A little clunky in the modern world however you can get correct flash exposure with synch speeds up to 1/500th of a second at any aperture that the power of the flash can handle.

The LS lenses still work well as "normal" lenses so if you need the focal length and the lens is nicely priced go for it. They were designed to help with shorter shutter speeds than 1/30th sec , good luck with your photos and on the hunt for your flash solution.

There are very few rules as such, generally with safety shots they are images you take during the day which mean that you have something to post even if nothing nicer comes along by the end of the day. If you want to improve them further once posted, go for it, just add a note so that old people like me don't have to doubt their memory :) Most people tend to post at the end of the day and choose their pick to show others, however we all have lives so go with whatever works for you, welcome aboard

Well we made it to the end of another month with a single lens, my month with the FA* 200mm 2.8 was an easy time, my comments for other peoples photos have been somewhat lacking and apologies for that, I did love the mono month but mostly went colour in my efforts.
Number one with this lens is the quality of resolution, top notch and a step up from the 80-200 2.8 zoom from the same era. I found the bokeh to be pleasant and I sometimes noticed an almost circular helios feel to the photos in the viewfinder which was not so pronounced in the actual images. The minimum focus distance is not too bad and I cannot remember any slowness with focusing via the screw drive. A few shots that I liked from the month

Nice to see real world comparisons, I like the 18-135 as a walk around lens too and like yourself go for the 2 lens 16-50 with 50-135 when I want better quality ( and am prepared to take more gear)

I did the same with our distributor in Oz, I only saw the Pentax puff pieces in the media but with their recent history of delivering quality lenses, I just had to pull the trigger. I hope yours arrives soon :)

I love the out of focus highlights, enjoy the new lens, I can just see it fly in your hands with the delicate handling of close up blooms :)

I have only had the lens a short while but am actually very impressed , not only with the focusing speed but also with the relative narrow depth of field when wide open with such a wide lens, also the very short minimum focal distance, some samples here

Woohoo, perfect choice as it will inspire you to feel like you are wielding your metal hammer against the anvil with its wonderful metal feel and heft :) Surely Maples metals can give you some time off during December.....

I have only had a day shooting with mine so far, I am impressed with the close focus ability, the shallow depth of field for such a wide lens helps isolate the subject well. I shoot RAW and am looking forward to Lightroom releasing a profile for the lens, at the moment there is still some slight barrel distortion near the edges with straight lines, easily tweaked away. The colours seem very crisp to me and it feels easy to handle on the K1.
On this shot zoom in on the decoration to see how sharp it is and note how narrow the focus is

Hmmmm my signature shows my bias, I do love my Z1 but I must have the optional grip on it. How lovely are the LX, great over the decades, so many choices for customising it through viewfinders, backs, motor drives and flashes. However, the first roll of film through the old professional workhorse, the immersive feel of the large 6x7cm negative means I would chose a late model 67II, clunk ;)

Hmm the FA* 200mm has exceeded my expectations, I have the FA* 80-200 and found I was mostly using it at the 200mm end so when this became available I thought why not. The colours and contrast are pleasing to my eye but my efforts have been somewhat safe rather than inspired, partly due to weather and work lately. I have been trying with the mono however some shots have just had to be in colour. I admire the 3 photo mini them Mikey has been pursuing and have enjoyed the quality and subjects of his themes. Playing with the new 21mm has been taking up some time and I am looking forward to using it in SIC in December. I also obtained the classic SMC K 20mm f4 this week and along with the FA 20mm and crop 21mm Limited, I will be doing my own "mini" test comparisons with the new lens, fun times ahead :)

Actually, I was only ever mildly interested in the 560mm, I am really hanging out to see them make a proper 600mm f4 , until then I just use the 150-450 on the K3 with the 1.4 converter :) If I start saving now I might be able to afford it by the time they release one :(

Well it looks like I am losing my mind, I upgraded lightroom recently and yesterday with my fence photo, I thought that I had lost all the Pentax profiles in Lightroom, I searched the forums and discovered that I had imported a JPG rather than RAW shot, so that the profiles are not used. Being a little lazy I hadn't mounted this month's lens on to the K3III and had left it on the original K3. After 2 months using the newer camera I had gotten in to the habit of the card closest to the back of the camera being slot 1 unlike the older camera where slot 1 is towards the front of the camera. I have the cameras set up to write RAW to slot 1 and JPG to slot 2. It turns out I need to upgrade me rather than lightroom. Oops

Pentax D-FA 21 f2.4 OR Samyang 20 f1.8 ?

Interesting take on the value proposition, in my case I would need to spend way more to invest in a different system to match the capabilities of the equipment I have collected over the last 40 years. Yes, Pentax no longer markets to the low end of the market, that market has switched to phone cameras, what is left is mid to high end, imagine if they kept just doing badge engineering lenses in the future, their reason to continue would quickly disappear. I think that concentrating on a particular segment and delivering quality lenses makes sense, sadly that will mean I need to invest more to support these new lenses, the 50 and 85 mm lenses are spectacular and I hope the new 21mm will match them. Just on the older 20mm lens, here is a link to my review of that lens with some samples, really looking to exceed these results with the new lens :)
