Thanks Steve. I think you nailed it. Lightroom does not report any lens identification (other than focal length and aperture).

K-1ii reading Sigma 150-500mm as APS-C lens?

I have the Sigma DG 150-500 1:5-6.3 APO HSM with OS. I recently sent it in to Sigma to have the mount updated so I could use it with my K-1ii. The camera reads this as an APS-C lens and automatically enters crop mode, but the lens is a full frame lens. I can switch to full frame mode as long as I remember to do it. Is this expected or normal?

The first is looking into North Carolina from the Appalachian Trail near Carver's Gap in the Cherokee National Forest.

The second is from Craggy Pinnacle Summit in Pisgah National Forest. Peaking over the mountain may be an unconfirmed sighting of the cloud creature last seen on Argus X.

A few from the gardens at Biltmore - I liked this lens on my K-3, but it is even better on the K-1ii.

I would recommend FastStone Image Viewer. It is open-source freeware, and allows some simple edits along with the ability to make a slide show.

Due to the great deals on this lens, I have lowered the price to $165 including shipping.

Here's another sample. It's a great range on APS-C for taking normal to telephoto shots from the stands.

I upgraded to the PLM, and am selling my HD 55-300 on the marketplace, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

With the release of the new SDM model, the drop in prices for the HD 55-300 makes it a great value. I have used it for soccer and marching band, and find the reach and image quality more than good enough for a consumer zoom. It's also wide enough to get most shots when the action is close. The focus is slower than the new PLM, but with a little practice, it's not a big problem. The weather-sealing is great for some peace of mind. I used it when I didn't want to carry my heavy Sigma 150-500.

Another example photo - it's a great lens to take to football games (long reach, light weight).

This is just after last year's Old Oaken Bucket game (Purdue 31 - Indiana 24). The Purdue band flips their hats backwards after a Big10 victory.

Pentax O-ME53 - please share your experience using it with K-1

The same here. LASIK 15 years ago with great results. A little astigmatism in my right eye, but not enough to be a problem with photography. The only issue now is near focus as I get older.

I have been using the O-ME53 since the K-20D and love it. I haven’t tried it on the K-1ii yet since the viewfinder is already big and bright, but I do have one on my MZ-S. I also like how it moves your eye a little further away from the camera back (for those of us with a big nose).

My experience is that the O-EM53 doesn’t really crop the viewfinder like a cropped photo cuts off the edge of a photo. I can still see the entire viewfinder, but I need to move my eye around a little more to see the edges. Without glasses this is easy, but if I was wearing glasses, I expect it would be harder to see the edges.

Silver Pentax K-3 (not fully functional - read description)

Asking Price
60.00 USD

Item Location

Item Description
This is a Premium Silver Edition of the of K-3, approximately 19000 shutter activations. During a rainy soccer shoot, water or condensation caused damage to the light metering. I sent in to Precision for a repair estimate which came back at $700 to replace the main flex circuit and CPU, finder LCD, and photo sensor block. I chose not to pay that much to repair it, but I did some work on it myself to no avail. You can read the story here.

Need photos of K-3 with top cover removed - PentaxForums.com

The camera works in manual mode or live view, but photos taken in other modes are overexposed since the meter thinks the scene is dark.

The camera could be used for parts (cosmetically it is in good condition with only minor scratches), sent in for repairs, or used by someone who likes to use live mode or the sunny 16 rule. I decided to let it go since I got a K-1ii, and still have a fully functional K-3 in black.

I am selling the silver D-BG5 grip under a separate listing, but would take $140 for both.

I have the both the black and silver version, and purchased them new in 2014 (one for each of my K-3s). You choose which one you want. Now that I only have one APS-C camera, I don't need two of the same. They were only used a few times, so are still in like new condition. Includes orginal caps, hood, pouch, and box.

This is the last screw-drive version with the HD coatings, quick shift focus, and weather resistant features. I have always been impressed by the sharpness in this consumer zoom.

Everything is functioning perfectly and the lens is in excellent condition. The glass is perfect, and the only signs of use I can see are a few small marks on the hood.

Hood, original front and rear caps, and box are included.

With all the excellent help (thank you!), I was able to resolder the six loose wires properly. Unfortunately, after reassembly the camera still has no signal from the light meter, but all else is working.

My theory is that the wires came loose as I opened the top cover due to poor soldering at the factory combined with my clumsy fingers. I was pretty careful, but that's the only thing that makes sense.

I'm guessing that moisture somehow shorted out the light meter (which I believe is on part J500 "4WDKJ503 photo sensor block assembly"). It was a gradual process as the photos that day become more overexposed over time, and by the next day the light meter showed nothing. I don't know if that means the short can be reversed. If I could figure out how it shorted, it is possible I could correct it. According to the schematics, there is a single connector from J500 to the main circuit board T100, which I may try unplugging, cleaning, and reconnecting if I can get to it easily.

I notice that the LCD display in the viewfinder looks very dim. I suspect that it is designed to adjust brightness based on the reading from the light meter, so I don't think there is anything wrong with that module (O100 "Finder LCD block"). Since everything else on the camera is working, I hope the main circuit board is ok too.

Thanks. I did buy the parts list and the wiring diagram was exactly what I needed.

I also contacted DiGi Service who made the video of replacing a K-3 top and he kindly supplied some photos of the operation which gives me confidence I can resolder it correctly.

Now all I need is a little free time.

Thanks Brooke. I learned the Sunny 16 method on my dad's Argus C3, and still use it when the need arises.

It does appear that the soldering was very poorly done. I wonder if water getting inside could have caused one of the wires to come loose, and the others did when I pulled the lid. I can't know for sure, but I wonder if Precision even opened the camera. I also noticed the foam gasket on the left is folded over which could be how water entered.

Very helpful, thanks. It looks like the prism wiring is black to the front, then yellow, then blue and white. Unfortunately I haven't been able to quite see enough detail to be sure of the wiring under the mode dial yet, so I could still use a good photo. I may have to open up my other K-3, but I hesitate to put that one at risk.

My K-3 had a failure of the light meter, but everything else appears to be working. I sent in to Precision for repair, and they reported that the top seal failed and water had corroded the main flex circuit and cpu, finder lcd, and photo sensor block.

Read more at: Repair K-3 Silver or buy a K-3ii? (or upgrade to K-1?) - PentaxForums.com.

The $700 cost was more than I could justify, so I had them return it unrepaired. The camera still works, but only in manual mode since the light meter registers zero.

My curiousity got the better of me, and I took the top cover off to take a look. I don't see any obvious signs of corrosion, but I do see five wires that are loose from their solder spots. It is possible that they came loose when I took the cover off. They do not appear to have been very well soldered.

Two (black and yellow) at the top of the prism. Three (orange, purple, and green) under the mode dial.

Does anyone have a clear photo showing these wires so I know where to resolder them? I would like to see if by lucky chance that might fix the camera.

Repair K-3 Silver or buy a K-3ii? (or upgrade to K-1?)

I was able to get some clarification from Precision about the repair quote. Their diagnosis is that a weather seal around the top cover failed allowing water to enter the viewfinder area. They see signs of water damage to the electronics listed on the repair quote (main flex circuit and CPU, finder LCD, and photo sensor block). They are unwilling to do a lesser repair.

I did speak with Ricoh Pentax about it, but they are not willing to help in any way since the camera is out of warranty. That is disappointing but not surprising.

As much as I like this camera, I just can't justify spending $700 to repair it. So once I get it back, I will put my Silver K-3 and D-BG5 battery grip on the market for anyone who needs a silver grip or wants to try their hand at repair (or wants to spend $700 to fix it with Precision).

There is a bright side to this. I have been given approval to buy a K-1 Mark ii. As much as I will miss my silver friend, I think I will enjoy having a full frame again (I still shoot film from time to time), and it should complement my black K-3 pretty well.
