I usually crop my images so editing usually has happened to images I put up, although rarely beyond crop and minor colour tweaks. Facebook compresses images that it deems too large and I'm wondering what that limit is so that I can avoid it. An advantage to Lightroom seems to be that you can set a maximum file size that it will stay under.

Since getting a K50 I've been shooting in Raw plus Jpegs at the 5 megapixel setting. The latter are only for Facebook and I'm slowly getting my head around Lightroom - not my favourite program but it does some things well, particularly resizing images.
I'm asking if there is any reason to shoot the JPEG in addition to the Raw file, or just let Lightroom resize the Raw and convert it to JPEG. If the latter what settings apart from sRGB should I use? Currently I'm setting 920 pixel along the longest side and a maximum file size of 100kb, but really have no great idea if these are ideal.
Facebook isn't the greatest for displaying detailed photos, but I'd just like to get the best online IQ I can. All comments very welcome.

Eye-Fi Card in K-50 is a handy feature!

Toshiba cards in the size I want (32gb) are way cheaper than Mobi. I will sometimes be shooting Raw + JPEG and just want to transfer the small 5mb JPEGs to a tablet/mobile phone for review and possible immediate upload to Facebook. Is it possible to configure this that only JPEGs are uploaded? Also , I've heard that Toshiba cards don't necessarily work in all cameras, if anyone has experience of them in a K50 I'd appreciate their input.

Well that would be a lot better! I take it that it doesn't have to be reversed when a modern lens goes on the camera and aperture is set by the camera body. Way more handy if thats the case.

Thanks to everyone for their input, it is much appreciated. The camera has arrived and I'm hopefully picking up a Sigma 18-125 DC this weekend, I know its nothing flash but will suffice nicely as a casual walkaround lens. I have plenty of vintage glass that I'm eager to get on this camera and try out, it will be a great upgrade over my much loved but now semi retired 450D. Going over the manual it seems that enabling aperture changes on the barrel isn't one of the settings I can add to a user profile. Hope I'm wrong since having one profile for manual lenses and another for modern auto lenses would be useful rather than having to dig into the menus to enable/disable according to lens would be a slight nuisance.
There is a great article on setting up K50s that I either found here or on the Pentaxians facebook page. My thanks to whoever set it up, it will be very handy this weekend as I go on and customize the camera.

K50 reliability issues??

Situation all resolved somewhat out of the blue. The Australian Pentax importer put the last fifteen NIB K50s, all black, up on eBay at a very good price and I scored the second last one. Warranty is two years and I'll see about a further extension. Since I'd sold surplus lenses beforehand my net cost was only a hundred. Looking forward immensely to getting it and getting some modern auto lenses as well.

K50 reliability issues??

I've sold some stuff on ebay and finally have funds to buy a new camera. The K50 is the one I'm looking at, NIB ones are still available, BUT there have been enough reliability postings about this camera to have me concerned. Plenty of people seem to have had issues with them, even within a year of purchase, and the cost of repair to one seems in most cases to be close to new price. Does anyone have stats on how many are developing faults? The camera ticks all the boxes I need (I shoot with manual film era lenses) but the the box labelled "reliable will last for years and years" is a big, big box and it's not ticked as yet.
On a cosmetic front, wanting to get a white one just to be different, but how well, or not, do conventional black lenses look on this body and does the white body show dirt/scuffs/marks too easily?

Thanks, I never thought replacing my reliable old Canon 450d would prove so difficult.

Alternate walk around lens for the K50 over the kit lens.

Thanks to all for the advice, there are several good suggestions at different price points. I've started listing surplus film lenses on ebay and will see where the funds finish up once the sales are complete. Hopefully K50s will still be available once the auctions finish and Paypal's three week retaining period for funds expired. Didn't know anything about that unfortunately till I started listing.

I'd better clarify what this lens - whatever it turns out to be - will be used for. As mentioned I use vintage glass, enjoying the challenge of shooting manually and setting up everything myself,I feel more that I'm taking the shot and not that a couple of thousand lines of code are doing everything. BUT, there are also plenty of times that shooting manually is a right pain and I just want to let the camera do the work. One of these that I remember well was a quilt and embroidery show (don't laugh, the detail and patterning make great subjects) which was so crowded that it was way too difficult to set up each shot manually. Another was Henty sand dunes in Tasmania where climbing a thirty metre sand dune with a hefty camera pack nearly killed me, hence I'm just after a good walkaround lens, capable of good quality shots, that won't be taxing to use. It won't be my standard lens, that tends to be the Rikenon 28-100, but it must be capable of magazine quality work. I have been published in "Camera for Enthusiast" magazine in Australia and write occasional travel pieces, which is the reason I'm after a step up from the kit lens without breaking the bank. Some excellent recommendations, but so far they are panning out more expensive than the Sigma barring a good second hand example coming up, which is something I'll keep my eye out for.

I'm on Tamborine Mountain in Queensland and rarely visit cities - even our local Brisbane just up the road. Shooting tends to be more nature oriented but, when on holidays, it could be anything.

There are still a few new K50 bodies around at the very good price of $400 Australian, body only. I'm unsure about getting the kit lens in the bundle, which would be roughly another hundred dollars, or trying or an upgrade to something more versatile and capable. The Sigma 17-70 has impressed me for a while, despite some criticism of it's performance wide open, while SP or EX Tamrons or Sigma's are getting out of my budget. Any other lenses I should consider as an upgrade walk around lens without going too expensive? The 17-70 is about $330 on Ebay and I wouldn't want to go over this. Mainly I shoot with classic lenses, the main kit being:
Pentacon 30 F3.5
Rikenon 50mm F2
Rikenon 28-100 F4
Nikon 80-200 F4.5.

If anyone knows of any reason any these won't perform well on a K50 I'd appreciate the advice.

Some years ago we had a large format printer and tried to do the canvas/fine art printing thing. We failed miserably, China killed us,. people can buy a large canvas print retail for less than it cost us to buy the raw materials. There was no way sales justified having a $10,000 44" printer.

I've exhibited at local shows and have sold the odd print. Far more successful was a article i wrote for a photography magazine - eight pages, nine photos, 1500 words and I was paid $600, which basically worked out at about $60 per hour. I was very happy with it and will be writing another article December/January. No guarantee it will be published but the editor has given me the go ahead on it so it's promising.

Three more from a nice outing yesterday. I'll buy a proper adapter with focus assist for this lens, which I;m really enjoying. Re the body condition, the glass is very good, there was in fact no damage to the front filter BUT the rear metalwork around the glass looks definitely dodgy. So far though I'm really happy with the results - it's easily beating the Pentax 28-36 SMC I've used recently and which I rated very highly. Hopefully more Pentacon/Myer lenses will join my "go to" bag.

Hal

Pity the top one lost so much detail in conversion from Raw - the original is razor sharp.

I agree with the OP, the Rikenon XR F2 is in my "go to" bag and I love that lens to bits. Light but not cheap feeling, beautiful handling lens to take photos with a and superb IQ. I've taken some truly lovely shots with that lens.

The lens has arrived and I'm actually very happy with it. Surprisingly sharp, great colour and gives very nice results with no or minimal processing. Have only attached one file this time, and the RAW version of this shot is the equal best photo I've ever taken of this bridge. Other shots are equally promising, I'm sure I'm going to like using it.Will try ad post more photos later.

Rats, your right. On checking the photos closer it isn't in as good condition as I had thought. Still, the glass is described as unmarked and operational condition sound. Proof will be when I get it so fingers crossed it takes great photos. Teach me a lesson to go over the photos minutely when buying these things.

Sounds as though I would be way better forgetting about the 29mm Pentacon and getting the 30 instead. I've had a look at Ebay and they are available at sane prices. Is there anything I need to look out for to make sure I get the Meyer version? As I just discovered with a 135mm F2.5 Supertak, there are three versions and you really need to know which your getting..

"Ex. Meyer Lydith Preset aperture model" Is this the one referenced above. Sorry about the caps and bolding, it's been picked up from the copy and paste and I can't get it back to normal.

Darn, I was really hoping this would be ok. Getting a vintage WA 28mm or wider is proving harder than I thought. No end of 50mm primes, but a reasonably priced wide angle is not easy to find.. Thanks for the input.
