A Lone Surfer returns from the surf across a remote beach on the mid-north coast of Australia. Went for the feel of isolation and space with this one, taken from high up on a headland, with a few out of focus twigs to break it up..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer

Ochre Sunrise

Lots of patience in this shot, waited pre dawn for a rare cloud formation at sunrise on Shelley Beach Nambucca Heads.. the red sunrise and clouds indicated an approaching storm. A small window of opportunity before wind and rain, gave me unique colour and light. Bit of post production in light room to bring up the light and ocean red colour reflection, but basically as I saw it. Set up the tripod for a low shot..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer

A few water and land based shots from a photo shoot for the Loggerheads Malibu Classic at Scotts Head. I used the Pentax K5 and 15mm for the water shots with a Dave Kelly Water Housing and Pentax K3ii with Sigma 50-500mm for the land shots. Had a Surf Art Show with other surf artists at the local Bowlo which sold a few shots. more photos on my face book page at: Hewysurf-ocean and surf photography by Chris Hewgill - Home | Facebook

Couple of recent tube shots using the Pentax K5 and Dave Kelley Water Housing, the housing is all set up for simple operation with dials for all manual settings, I change the settings depending on light and conditions. I plan for the session by pre focussing at around 3' (sticky tape lens) for the fish eye set at 10mm for in the tube shots, I have a pistol grip button attached to the shutter on high continuous mode. These shots are on a local beach break at around 4' to 5' low tide, I did take a few wipeouts getting the in the barrel view pics. Pentax cameras are really suited to surf and ocean work and I'm still surprised the lack of photographers taking them in the water, they are tough little beasts..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer

I stick my Pentax's- K5/K3/K3ii in the pictured Dave Kelly Custom Housing. Here's a few recent surf water shots using the Pentax 10-17mm and Pentax 15mm. Pentax Cameras are great for water shots, tough weather sealed and can take a bump. I set them all all manual focus preset, with water housing dials allowing for shutter speed, F stop, ISO and review. Also have fish eye port, flat port for 15mm/70mm and zoom port for 18-55mm/100mm. Autumn is beautiful light on the mid north coast of Australia with warm weather and clear early morning light brushed by the offshore breeze. Here ocean swells break across Shelley Beach Nambucca Heads, all framed by the tropical coastal Pandanus Tree.

Recent big swell hit our mid north coast and I did a shoot for a few of the lads towing in at a local reef break, not for the faint hearted as it's metres from rocks. I like this one as the surfer is surrounded a maelstrom of foam. Taken by Pentax K3ii 1/800 F14 with the old Bigma about it's sweet spot @ 400. I've got this in a local cafe as a mural.. Hewy

Photo of ocean foam hitting a shallow beach sandbar. It's a difficult shot as you are close to the action and need a water housing to protect the camera and lens from saltwater. I waited for an overcast day to add contrast between the foam and sky, with all setting manual so I can change them to suit light and speed..cheers Hewy..

Good to see a few Pentaxian's into surf, they are great hardy cameras for surf photography. I'm on the way up to the Goldie on the 20th-23rd hope to get some of that cyclone swell with my K311 and Bigma lens, may take the water housing out with the K5...been chasing waves around my local, here's a shot from the last cyclone swell and a link to my surf site: Latest Surf Photos | Hewysurf | Surf Photographer

Handheld Pentax K3 Aerial photo taken from a helicopter with door open over the coast of the beautiful Nambucca Heads on the Mid North Coast of Australia. Difficult shot as the helicopter was moving fast and there was changeable clouds and light. This is used as a Tourism photo for the area..

Large Photo Murals by Pentax

Recently I produced some large mural prints for a local major tourist and service centre, all taken with Pentax K3 and Pentax K5 and mix of lenses, there was lots of work to edit the right images to suit big format sizes, with murals 7.5m x 3m (Collage), 3.6m x 2.6m (Beach) and 2.8m x 2.1m (Pandanus). I've done similar images for local cafes in perplex glass, canvass and frames, but these were done on wallpaper material and have come out pretty good on colour and image quality, considering the size. It was pretty competitive to get my images in the mix, but I'm stoked I had the right coastal photos needed for the coastal tourism focussed centre.

This was taken in the early morning with the K3 on a big tripod zoom to get the fishermen in the golden light from a lookout 1km away, the long beach forming an S design with deep gutters, rips and shallow sandbanks..

Sports Surfer in the tube

A difficult shot of a surfer in a tube on a dangerous rock break wave in Australia. This action shot was taken hand held on a rock precariously perched close to the ocean, I used a method of holding my elbows together to reduce lens movement, although this lens is heavy and coupled with that I had to race to safety every now and then from exploding swells. The surfer's yellow board also highlights the colour against the wave, which is inches from rocks underneath the wave..

Lots of trial and error to get the sea foam washing into the beach..
