Thanks! All RAW. More work post processing sometimes but the sun glare off the water sometimes messes with exposure and white balance. Much easier to fix in RAW.

Also be aware F-stop is dependent on the lens you use. My DA* 60-250 without the 1.4 teleconverter is best at F8. With the teleconverter it's happier at F16. I have a DA-L 55-300 that I don't use because the DA* 60-250 is that much better especially for cropping. Good Luck!

I do a lot of boat racing with my K-3 using a DA* 60-250mm and the Pentax HD 1.4x Teleconverter. I've found shooting in TAV, F16 1/1250 sec. Continuous Focus holding down the back focus button is giving me great results. All of these shots are crops due to the distances involved. It can be done quite successfully with some practice. I have been successful doing pans down to 1/60 sec. but you need smooth water. Boats move in the up and down direction and left to right which really screws with panning. Hope this helps some. Have Fun!

I bought my K200D in 2008 and still use it from time to time. It does Pit duty at the races these days. I picked up my K-3 in 2014 and will continue to use it until it gives up the ghost. They've both been outstanding performers over the last 11 years for the K200D and 5 years for the K-3. I see no need to run out and upgrade every time something newer comes along.

From my K200D doing Pit Duty a couple of weeks ago at New Martinsville, WV.

Apache 5800 Nice Pelican Knockoff

For my expected use it should not be an issue. However my white water rafting days are behind me! If that was how it was going to be used I might be a bit more picky. It does have a nice thick o-ring seal around the perimeter and nice positive latches. Any type of waterproof case can fail especially if something gets closed in the seal or in this case there is a pressure relief valve. If that is left open that also is a potential leak. My expectations for this case were something that would hold both bodies and lenses along with accessories and protect them from sudden downpours or blowing dust. Also ease of storage. Both cameras and lenses fit without disassembly which is a real plus for me. My equipment is ready to go right out of the case.

I picked up an Apache 5800 Rolling Carry-On Case today at Harbor Freight Tools. It lists for $89.99 and I had a $20.00 off coupon. Doing the boat racing photos I'm outdoors all the time. I was able to fit both my K200D with DA 18-55mm and K-3 with DA* 60-250mm and HD 1.4X AF Tele Converter all attached. Also Metz flash and stand. Spare batteries and chargers and other misc. odds and ends.

This will allow me to be able to quickly pull things out and put them away without taking things apart in sometimes wet or dusty conditions. I think this will workout well as it is superior protection for my gear when traveling to and from.

Just thought I would pass this along for anyone who is interested.

Since my processing skills have improved I dug up the PEF file of this oldie from 2012 and reprocessed it today. Taken with my K200D with a DA-L 55-300mm.

Thanks! I much prefer the DA* 60-250mm to my DA-L 55-300mm. It focuses faster and is much sharper than the 55-300mm.

The boat is probably doing around 170 mph so with the angle of the shot maybe 150 to 160 mph closure rate. I'm happy. K-3 with a DA* 60-250mm. :)

Thanks! Vintage Hydroplane exhibitions can be exciting even though "technically" they are not racing. The guys and girls who drive them sure have a lot of fun though. This boat raced in the late 60's and 70's when I was a kid. It currently runs in the American Power Boat Association's Vintage & Historic division.

I always use center point when shooting boat racing. Backgrounds are too busy to do otherwise. This and the other shot I posted where using my DA* 60-250 with the Pentax HD 1.4x teleconverter then cropped on top of that. I've been real happy with the auto focus with that combo on my K-3. It took some figuring out at first. This shot is f8, 1/1600, 640 ISO. DOF with the teleconverter is definitely narrower than without. Still need to play some more this spring to find the sweet spot. The Pentax T/C was definitely worth the extra $$$. It communicates properly with the camera and takes some of the guesswork out of things.

I'm really liking the combo of the Pentax 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW and Pentax DA* 60-250mm Zoom lens. It gives me 350mm with this lens which is a big help when shooting across a river. These are from last weekends Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta on the Ohio River at Wheeling, WV
